If you want to ruin tires shocks ect. Drive to San Felipe. The detour south of Rio Hardy is at about 8 miles of big rocks and holes. What a waste

It's fine, if you take it easy and drive slowly -- It's actually less than 2 miles. We drove it again Sunday morning, however, I wouldn't even think
of it if it was raining in that area, that's when it gets really bad. They will be working on it all summer and are much better at clearing rocks,
watering it and creating a hard surface, but cars, trucks with AZ, CA & MX plates pass us like bats out of "h" and when they get 3 abreast, it's
not pleasant. I drove a VW Jetta (a little thing you know) my husband drove the F350. We've driven it 6 times in May and June and this is the best

I was on the road between Mexicali and San Felipe (125 miles) TWICE last month... and the unpaved detour along side the road widening project was 6
miles (10 km) long in the Rio Hardy area and about 1 mile long near Laguna Salada canal.
There were no rocks... it was wide graded dirt... it wasn't watered down well enough to stop dust and it had some uneven (rough) areas... Oh well...
it is BAJA, afterall!
Trucks, busses, passenger cars all were getting through without a problem... I didn't even need to shift on-the-fly into 4WD it was so easily
drivable. Dusty and uneven: YES, rocks and holes: NO.
Perhaps a truck full of rocks accidently lost it's load just ahead doradodan?
San Felipe and Baja is hurting big time for tourism... no need to exaggerate a detour while they make the highway better to keep out the weak, right?
EDIT: If THAT detour ruined your tires and suspension, you REALLY need to shop for a better vehicle (for Baja or anywhere)!

Just to segue a bit, I have 120k miles on my '07 Silverado 4X4 and lost a front Bilsten shock on our last Baja road trip going from BOLA south to GN.
I will replace all 4 ball joints this week as they are near spec.
