Duty on building supplies?

I need to bring some new faucets, doorknobs, and tile for a project in Baja. I suppose the total materials will retail for about $2,000. How much duty (percentage) is charged for building supplies?

Rather than crossing at Otay Mesa, I'm planning to cross at Tecate because I suspect that customs officers might be more "relaxed" there.

WOW....Two grand for door knobs etc.
Faucets....American Standard now manufactures in Mexico and they have their stuff in Home Depot here.

But...Tile? I always thought it was cheaper here than in the states. Again, Home Depot has a good selection.
Seems like the duty jumps around between 14 and 17 %, but eees Meseeco so who knows.

This is custom, high end stuff not made in Mexico. My client is particular.

Tecate is definitely the way to go! Very relaxed and easy going. Pull into the angled parking on the left as soon as you cross in and the office is right there. (There are only like 4 parking spaces) Take your receipts and hope for the best. Some inspectors have looked at my construction supplies and didn't charge me anything and let me go! If you do have to pay, plan on around 15% or so. You can lessen the blow by making your own receipts... Also, I think you get $75.00 per person exempt from the importation tax. Good luck!

This is what we experienced, too. Remember, the duty must be paid in cash pesos. No cards, no US dollars.

Tecate is the way to go..
I would remove all the "new" packaging you can, and place in plain cardboard box or storage containers..
Would also make up a simple mainifest (grouping items) and show a value "$" to the side. Some items could be listed as purchased from garage sales? You can have orginal recipts in side envelope if needed.
Plan on 15% duty (less personal exemption)
