Introduction & WTB 20ft c/c Panga

Hello,
I just registered after viewing this site for about a year. I would like to introduce myself. My name is Duke Brownfield and I live in Bahia Asuncion, BCS at least for the past year. I do not know where this message should be posted (introduction/classified) so I chose General Baja Discussion. As well as introducing myself I am also looking to purchase a 20ft center console (gringo) panga. I would be interested any 18-20 ft c/c pangas between San Diego and Cabo. I could be talked into a 22ft c/c if a 20ft does not present itself.

20ft panga is not as common as 22 or 23', a clean new basic hull is about 3-4k and used quite a bit less. Customization for center console is possible, with floor, tanks for as much as you want to spend-typically up to 12-15k in LB. 22-23' is common because it fits the SOC chop, but as you say asuncion is different swell and perhaps you have other concerns.

Might be best an option to choose any good used panga and trailer consider customizing for yourself which is common in La Paz.

I'll keep my eyes open for a 20ft center console, which would be about the rarest thing I have ever seen.

Pangas were developed to handle the Sea of Cortez swell and wave conditions and almost all of them were built in the 22 and 23 foot design. A 20 foot was an adaptation and was not a very well balanced boat even though several builders in Guaymas and Los Mochis tried this by moving up the transom in their molds. Also, a couple of the builders in Ensenada made a 20 foot but it was a pretty heavy and hard to handle boat in the swell. If you look at the boats used in Asuncion you will find that they prefer the 23- or 24. Now, if you want a boat that is seaworthy and handles a smaller engine for economy, then leave out all the weight producing modifications like center consoles and other "improvements". One of the best fishing boats I have been on lately was an "ARCA" panga, built in La Paz by Max Shoyer or Lupe Diaz, and converted to a side console. No significant weight addition, good structural rigidity for flex, and lots of fishing area from front to rear.
If you watch the local fishermen, you will learn a lot about why they gravitate towards certain designs. Ask a lot of questions, try to get a ride on several of the boats, and you may just end up with a boat that truly does what you want it to do.

Thanks for the info. I have been doing quite abit of research on Panga’s and yes I agree with you. The 20’s-as far as I can find-were mostly 22’ that had the transom repositioned further forward. Got to love “Mexican ingenuity” Yes, I know the 22’s will handle the swells better? Here in Asuncion the launching & recovery is a big thing. I used to think I would be able to launch and recover by myself hence the 20’ but as time goes by I am realizing that a one-person launch & recovery will not be so user friendly. Who’s going to pull the truck out of the ocean while you are in the boat? So I am thinking real hard about the 22’-it’s going to take two people on any boat so why not the 22? Yes the Diaz side console looks very promising and I certainly would consider one. Thanks again for all of the suggestions and comments. Keep them coming as they all useful for me.

Pangas are great boats but they also have their drawbacks. I've got a 23' Bayrunner that I'm considering selling. This boat is set up to fish! Even comes with a custom launching dolly - easy and safe launching from the beach. I'm south of you in San Juanico.

With some new residents here buying boats, I'm thinkin it would be a good job opportunity for a local guy to be available for launch assistance cause it sure is a 2 person job....maybe someone with a beater could even launch and retreive pangas instead of getting your own trucks in salt water.

I for one would gladly hire someone with local experience to help me put my boat in and out there. I've experienced the process personally and I remember thinking "glad this isn't my boat and truck".....

Here in SJ we've developed a technique where your truck doesn't get wet at all. The launching dolly makes it easy and safe. My wife and I launch our boat easily.

Let me see if I can upload some photos. It's really a simple affair - a single axle with bunks and a long tongue that you detach right at the axle. This allows you to tow the boat to the beach and point it bow-out. Detach the tongue, lift the bow, and she rolls right into the water. Retrieval is simply reverse order.

I used to launch my 22' Panga by myself often. Better to have help, but it is doable. I would think that launching in the Pacific would be more difficult, though. I was in Mulege, on The Sea of Cortez and/or the Bahia de Concepcion. I am not a large man and am in my 70s. Some of my macho delusions that live in my brain get acted out physically because I don't accept that I can't. :light::wow::spingrin:

As to not getting your vehicle in the water, just have a welder add a four foot extension to a hitch. Sometimes you can find a used one, or maybe one will come with a used Panga that you find to buy. They are pretty common.

Got any shots of it going in the water? I think I get the idea but a launch shot would help me see how it works. Appears that getting the boat balanced on the trailer is a major detail.
I had an extension built for the tin boat and now Bubba doesn't have to get wet. I think it would work a bit better if the boat was balanced on the trailer though.

Hi Russ,

Nice little tinny!

You nailed it, balance is the key. We got it right and you can lift the bow easily once you remove the tongue.



Then you just run the boat out and pull the axle out from the rear.



Notice I have the dolly strapped to the boat with two heavy duty ratchet ties - super important that you keep the whole thing balanced.

We used the trailer/tongue extension here at first but with surf behind the boat it was super difficult to keep things lined up - especially on the way in. It's shallow here a long way out so this deal is way lighter and easier to handle. And, bow-out allows you to just float over the waves when they come in.

This boat, at 23' with 8'6" beam, is about as big as you can launch with relative ease. I've helped to launch and retrieve some other heavier boats and things sure get interesting fast. These tin boats rock in baja - light, strong, stable, plenty of room, quick, economical.
