Those of us who have had the immense pleasure to have eaten at Jesse's know full well what a great venue Tres Virgenes is.

That said, as I sift through Bayless' list of places visited, I really have to scratch my head. I really wonder just how it it that he ends up in some of these places.

In my opinion, and although I realize that he has a limited number of venues to feature on the next season of shows, Some of the selected places, including, what I consider spiffed rooms for his people at a few hotels, just don't really seem to me to be the best that Cabo offers. Unless, of course, a major consideration is getting discounts.

Two venues stand out starkly to me. The Hotel California in Todos Santos, (and yes I wholeheartedly agree with the notion that they really need to stop playing that Eagles song), and Ediths in Cabo.

I suppose there are a number of folks on this forum that are acquainted with the Edith's legend- a waitress at the beach restaurant "The Office", that somehow, miraculously went on to become its owner and later opened her namesake restaurant uphill of The Office.

I'll confess that I've not eaten at Edith's for perhaps six years. But at the time of the last visit, there was a clear reason for not coming back. The food sucked and was over-priced.

I have a certain amount of pangs of guilt to be trashing Bayless when fundamentally, the reason for this thread was to celebrate Jesse's incomparable restaurant. And Given the quality of his total presentation, and his hard work, I really hope that the exposure on the Bayless show brings him many new customers.

I just have had a long time problem with Bayless setting up shop in Chicago. Actually, if you check into Bayless' past, you can find a bunch of articles that tend to show, that although Bayless lived and worked in Southern California, he just may have "fled" to Chicago inasmuch as the expectations about Mexican cuisine in Illinois are way lower than one would find in the Southwest.

Just one cranky guy's opinion, and in no way meant to diminish the great job that Jesse Chavez is doing in La Paz.

Rick is actually a pretty nice guy and an amazing teacher. Had the opportunity to spend a week with him in Oaxaca a few years ago doing cooking classes.

For anyone interested, they did a series of 12 "out takes" from the filming that chronicled their progress up the peninnsula. Here's the link to the series if anyone wants to take a peek. Most of the outtakes are about 4 mintues +/- in length and all of them have a 30 second Bohemia ad at the end. A little Bohemia never hurt anyone  and they are his sponsor. The new season of Mexico One Plate at at Time begins in September.

RB did, indeed, almost open Frontera Grill in Los Angeles. He was just about ready to sign the least for a place on Melrose Ave. (way back before it was too trendy) but decided not to at the last minute. He was concerned that there wouldn't be enough support for his concept of Mexican food given what was available in East LA at the time. His wife's family is from Chicago, I think he thought they'd have a better support network there than in SoCal. Worked out for him in the end, no?

I guess I'm just a cynical old man.
Bohemia, which at one time was a great "German-style" beer is merely one of the brands owned by Cerveceria Chuatemoc, which is currently owned by Heineken International. So much for authenticity.

That said, I just don't buy the LA to Chicago thing.

There is an ongoing argument about Bayless and his status as a celebrity chef of Mexican cuisine. Some Mexican chefs believe Bayless shouldnt be the representative of mex cuisine in the US.

have to disagree here witcha howodd

Chicago is full of great international restaurants and foodies. As far as cuisine goes it has some of the greatest eateries in the world - making it a perfect venue for showcasing spectacular hispanic foods.
by comparison the LA market is saturated with so-so predictable and ever so trendy mex food joints. Why compete with that when you are a determined pro with style?

have you tried a bohemia lately? i don't care who owns it, it tastes the same as when i had my 1st which was on the veranda of the hacienda hotel in cabo in 1980! i think it is a superlative brew.
but i surely don't want to watch 30 second spots 12 times!!
