RFID Card - Radio Frequency Identification Card

mcfez - 6-20-2011 at 04:29 PM

Everyone is always looking for a way to cut down the wait at the border, and now there is another one. It is called the "Ready Lane", a lane reserved for vehicles in which everyone has the wallet card version of the passport shown on the left. At present, only Olay Mesa has a ready lane, but one is planned for San Ysidro soon.

The wait time is about half the time for normal lanes. You can apply for your RFID card at the address below.

You may also use SENTRI in the ready lane.

Certain states have RFID embedded in the drivers license, not Cali YET, and that can be used as well.

It appears that one is unable to apply on this site. It also appears to be a commercial site generating revenue by promoting third-party expedited service - which many/most applicants really may not desire nor need. Just my $.02.

I believe that for first-time applicants, most will want to locate their nearest passport application (acceptance) facility, which can be found through a simple search here:

http://iafdb.travel.state.gov

Processing times for routine or expedited service are kept updated here:
http://travel.state.gov/passport/processing/processing_1740....

If you need "same day" service, you should set an appointment at your nearest U.S. passport agency. These are listed here:
http://travel.state.gov/passport/npic/agencies/agencies_913....

To read about the "same day" process - and helpful tips - I'd suggest looking at this person's site:

The regular Passport Books issued within, say the last
few yrs. also, I believe have the RFID readable chip
in them, but the scanners for the Ready Line do
not read the passport book RFID equipped books
If this works, it will be worth the $40 dollars for
the passport card

McFastPass

Don't forget, for all of our AZ friends, that they opened a Ready Lane in Lukeville, AZ for all of the Rocky Point folks

Crazy that the new passports all have the RFID but you still have to purchase the card to use the ready lane.

Agreed. It is causing more confusion than anything.

Glad you liked the page Bajadock!

It seems like yesterday I was shelling out a 145 bucks to rush my passport (with a chip in it) so I could be compliant with the new border crossing law. Now more bucks to save time. Yep, I want our government running the health care system.
