Bad news abounds

Baja Bernie - 6-21-2011 at 08:42 AM

Started to post about a terrible accident involving Keri and Mike of the Pyramid Resort and then I read about Juanita...Sending her our prayers

Now for Keri...She and Mike were returning from shopping at Paco's little store in La Mision on June 5th when they were T'boned by a couple of drunk Mexicans...Keri suffered mulitple factures of her hip and Mike has a severly broken arm...

The guys who hit them were coming off the Toll road and apparently never even slowed down when they hit the Libre.

The guys tried to flee the scene but the cops arrested them a short time later.

Keri is still in the Conorado Convalesent Hospital and they say that she may be in the hospital for some time.

Her cell phone is 619-947-2666 and she would love to have a few Nomads chat with her and break up the boredom.

DENNIS - 6-21-2011 at 08:48 AM

Thanks for the news, Bernie.
Wishing all is well for Mike and Keri.

I'm so glad they caught the bast.rds!

Bruce R Leech - 6-21-2011 at 10:07 AM

thanks Bernie, Mike and Kerri are #1 people in my book.

Eli - 6-21-2011 at 11:49 AM

Keri has always been one of my favorite people on this board, her energy is always positive, she gives good knowledgeable advise, and she was oh so kind to my Dad when he went up for the Authors get-together at her place.
I am so sorry to hear about her and her husbands accident, please Bernie as I am far, far away, could you give her my best wishes for a speedy recovery when you next communicate with her. Sara

Bajahowodd - 6-21-2011 at 04:01 PM

Really sorry to hear about this. Get well soon Keri.

I'm guessing that from Bernie's description, it's just another example of how little value stop signs are in Mexico. While it may be a problem almost everywhere, for me, when driving in Mexico, I never trust that stop signs for cross traffic will mean stop.

That attitude is likely to get you rear-ended. ;D

I'm very familiar with that particular off ramp and have witnessed a half-dozen or more accidents there. Typically, federals park near the off ramp and give tickets for failure to stop. A good friend who owned a B&B near La Fonda was killed while she was walking home. They never found the vehicle. At the top of the list was a car that exited at a high rate of speed and ran under the back end of a Semi who was parked in the exit...Driver asleep. This is more common than one would think. A large majority of truckers treat off ramps as rest stops.

Pescador - 6-21-2011 at 04:28 PM

What a small world, she got ahold of me when she was setting up their insurance plan and I tried to help her do it the best way, hopefully it is working as she hoped.

wessongroup - 6-21-2011 at 04:42 PM

Sorry to hear... get well fast..

shari - 6-21-2011 at 05:33 PM

Oh my goodness...so sorry for the accident. I hope Keri has a laptop in her hospital room...do hospitals have wifi? Please send our love and wishes for a speedy recovery to Keri for us.

My Heart Goes Out to Them

Gypsy Jan - 6-21-2011 at 09:30 PM

I have never met them, but I hope that Keri and Mike recover.

Yes, Dave, I also remember about the terrible accident at that intersection at La Fonda/Alisitos.

Too dark, too much speed, too many drunks at night.

Common wisdom is don't drive after dark; I would add, please don't walk after dark near a highway.

i'll be calling her later this morning to pass along the good wishes.

Say "HI" for me.

paul r - 6-22-2011 at 09:00 AM

... great locals, all our thoughts,... that area has become a very dangerous, cluddered, tacky sign hole, please slow down and be aware of the dangers!...

BajaGeoff - 6-22-2011 at 10:05 AM

I spoke with Keri yesterday and she is in pretty good spirits considering the circumstances. She was pretty sure that the people in the other car who ran the stop sign and caused the accident had been caught by the authorities, which is good.

The one frustrating thing for Keri at the moment is that the facility where she is staying does not have wireless internet, so she would need a wireless dongle + service to be able to get online. She has not been able to do any work for the Pyramid since the accident on June 5th. If there are any technically inclined Nomads out there that might have a dongle she could borrow I am sure it would be greatly appreciated.

woody with a view - 6-22-2011 at 05:54 PM

Keri is doing good. 12 pins in her hips.....

she is hoping to be released by the end of June and then 3 months of not putting weight on her legs-yikes.

she said to give all y'alls a big hello!

Eli - 6-22-2011 at 06:06 PM

Thanks Woody! Good news, considering.

Marc - 6-22-2011 at 07:29 PM

That's how it happens. Right out of nowhere.

Sallysouth - 6-22-2011 at 10:47 PM

Oh Keri. You had just offered help for Juanita and I when we were in TJ.Now this!God speed sweet lady.Sending prayers and good thoughts to you.Sally

BajaBlanca - 6-23-2011 at 01:52 PM

get better, Keri, wishing you a speedy recovery ! How much does the wireloess dongle cost ??? anyone ??

BajaGeoff - 6-24-2011 at 09:52 AM

It's not the cost of the dongle that is the problem. Keri said she looked into it and the service wanted a two year contract (!!!!!$$$$$) which is why it would be great if someone already had a dongle they could simply lend to her.

If there is no wifi available its my understanding a dongle is useless, don't know that much about it it, just what I heard. Unless you meant if someone had a aircard they were not using to loan her. That would work.

BajaGeoff - 6-24-2011 at 11:55 AM

The facility does not have wireless, therefore she needs a USB dongle to be able to access a wireless service provider like Verizon.

An aircard and a dongle are basically the same thing.

MexicoTed - 6-24-2011 at 11:01 PM

So sorry to hear that Keri. I hope you and Mike get well sooner than expected.
Ted

GregN - 6-26-2011 at 02:21 PM

Thanks Bernie. Sorry to hear the news. Keri -- wishing you and Mike the best. Get well soon,.

An update

Baja Bernie - 6-26-2011 at 03:28 PM

Jaime and I spent some time with Keri yesterday at Sharps Convalecent Hospital in Coronado...What a tough lady. Thirteen pins in her right hip and they already have her hopping, one legged, down the hallways.

She in a real quandry because stairs are not going to be at all good for her for the next three months...just picture all of the stairs for her NOT to climb at the Pyramid...and you can understand why she is so concerned.

Anyway, we took a copy of this thread to her to show how many great Nomads had chimed in to voice support. She thanks you all and particularly commented on Woody's phone call.

She is looking forward to getting home and moving on. Mike suffered at least four breaks in his left wrist and is apparently doing well at home.
She is going nuts because of the lack of WiFi.

bajajudy - 6-26-2011 at 05:57 PM

Thanks for the update, Bernie
I hope that she will recover at record speed. Please give her my love when you speak to her.

Bajahowodd - 6-26-2011 at 06:15 PM

Yep. Mucho thanks for your update, Bernie.

13 pins in the hip. That's a really nasty injury. Really hope Keri can rehab and get back to normal. Soon.

woody with a view - 6-26-2011 at 06:53 PM

despite how grumpy we/i get sometimes, we're all just people trying to enjoy baja and life.

Get well Keri.

Sallysouth - 6-26-2011 at 11:09 PM

GoD speed Keri.

fdt - 7-11-2011 at 08:26 PM

Just talked to her over the phone. She's back in México, she sounds good, I could'nd hear very good but she has a broken pelvis and is on a walker. Those that know the resort, are aware of the stairs. I told her I'd come by to see her. Yes , it was just after we met at the store in Rosarito.

Many thanks.

I talked to her right now and she's doing fine, in a walker for the next couple of months. She has not had good internet since april, she's on dialup from telnor so she really can't log on so the only line she has is the one I posted. No magick Jack, no vonage, nada.
If anyone needs to contact her via me, feel free to just post here.

CaboMagic - 7-16-2011 at 11:56 AM

Ferna mil gracias. ..

Next time you speak with/see her please let her know all of us send healing thoughts and magic best wishes.
