my Father the fisherman

baitcast - 6-27-2011 at 08:56 AM

For some of the new folks:)

We all had someone to show us the way,to get hooked on the obsession we all enjoy today, maybe it was your granddad but most likely it was your dad.

My Dad was a outdoorsman of the first order, stream fishing for easternbrook, trolling for mackinaw as they were called in those days lake trout today, flyfishing for cutthroat, you name it,as long as had fins and would pull

I,ve been reminiscening alot lately and have been thinking of him alot, you do that alot as you grow older as you will see.

Anyway I thought I would share a couple of old shots, the rainbow was 12# he and I with 2 Mackinaw and a nice string of bows,by the way guys no stockers back then.

Henry Winkler ("The Fonz" and "Royal Pains") was on the Today Show this morning promoting his new book which is about how much he loves fly fishing (and his family and life):

Did your Dad ever fish Baja with you?

I think they were, the macks were everywhere in Ida the got very large 50# 60# Dad loved to troll for them and we never used the motor he said it was to noisy we always oared hours on end,I remember the day I was given the job.

I did take him once to Gonzaga Bay in the 60,s and he loved it:) he hooked a large grouper but lost him right at the boat but it and the road made his day,he told me how crazy he thought I was driving that road more than once:lol:

For fathers day a day late.

Baitcast,
That first picture really struck me. Looked like my dad standing out alongside our house on the farm. Especially the cap askew and the cigarette dangling, he undoubtably was a great man. Glad we still have the memories, even if we don't have the man.

My father was 5'8" but was the tallest man I ever knew,no fish was safe with him around, no matter the question he knew the answer ;)

My father was a commercial tuna fisherman from about 1955 until his passing in 1992. But when he got off the tuna boat he would grab his trout pole and head to the Sierras and often times in the Convict Lake area and Red's Meadow-he would not get near a boat to go out and fish for ocean fish.

Rob,

I grew up in Monroe WA, but I'm an old Coug. Spent my time in the Palouse and loved it.

BajaBlanca - 6-19-2018 at 08:26 AM

This is one cool thread! More dad and son photos needed. What a different world back then with the dangling cigarette!

Bubba - 6-19-2018 at 09:15 AM

Some great pics here, thank you!

fishbuck - 6-19-2018 at 11:50 AM

I wish I had more pics of me and my dad.
The only real regret I have is not spending more time fishing with my dad.
And ofcourse I would rather be rich than so darn handsome.

Thank you very much David! My dad took that photo in late 1959 in Manzanillo on the mainland. I am the kid in the white T-shirt, a couple of months shy of my 13th birthday!

We caught those fish (I caught the sailfish) from the 14 foot aluminum runabout on the left side of the dock. I still have that boat in the yard here in Northern CA, and I think it deserves another trip SOB!
