best taco stand - again

woody with a view - 7-12-2011 at 06:42 PM

in san quintin it's La Pasadita for srhimp (not a typo!) tacos.
in maneadero it's El Poblano.
near san miguel it's El Trailero.

Poblano was just opening up when i passed thru around 10am so i headed to Trailero for the first time. i think it is pretty even as to which is best, but Trailero made my day! TKT was 40 minutes at 11:30am.

oh, and the surf was epic! only 1 or 2 guys in the water at any time for 4 days..... life is good!

edit: forgot to add lengua tacos at the stand next to catavina store.

Mexicali

mcfez - 7-12-2011 at 07:16 PM

I could use a recommendation for a best taco stand off the main drag heading into San Felipe.

JESSE - 7-12-2011 at 07:19 PM

There are no good taco stands in La Paz:no:

briantroy - 7-12-2011 at 07:37 PM

Tacos El Yaqui in Rosarito are a little different, but very good!

J.P. - 7-12-2011 at 07:37 PM

In Maneadero just across the street from Poblano is the hands down best taco stand in the area it's called El Recero:yes::yes:

After you pass the last light on the Reforma in Chapultepec, look left and find "Tacos el Original." By far the best in Baja; it's owned by the same folks that own "el Poblano." Try the mulita with cabeza---to die for.

bajajudy - 7-13-2011 at 07:12 AM

Traditional morning tacos i. e. carne asada y cabeza. La Otra on Valario(bus station st.) in San Jose...only open until 1pm

Fish/shrimp tacos...Blue Fish in the Peninsula Plaza where appleby's(yuck) is. It is tucked in the corner behind Scotiabank. They also have THE best ceviche, shrimp and fish, in San Jose.

shari - 7-13-2011 at 07:40 AM

In Asuncion, my favorites are Conchitas for beef & tongue tacos and chili rellenos....Tacos Don Ramon's on saturday and sunday for fish and shrimp tacos...yeah baby!

Curt63 - 7-13-2011 at 07:49 AM

My favorite shrimp tacos (so far) in northern Baja (Ensenada) near the corner of Espinoza and Juarez

BajaBlanca - 7-13-2011 at 02:24 PM

El Yaqui in rosarito is really really really excellent, IMO

forgot to mention that the best part is the guy meowing .... as if they were cooking up cat !! very funny !!

love that you can sit in the shade, love that it is off the main drag, love that it is delish

Tacos el Gerente

Gypsy Jan - 7-13-2011 at 02:36 PM

Hugo, who was the main cook at Tacos Yaqui, opened his own place, two or three blocks north as Tacos Gerente.

The quality of the food followed him to the Gerente.

WOW! Thank you guys for all the great tips. I'm definitely bookmarking this thread. Any more Sudcalifornianos want to chime in?

It's "el Recreo," and it's OK. Good, but not generally acknowledged as the best down here.

Woooosh - 7-13-2011 at 03:26 PM

For meat tacos we like Tacos El Zurdo in Rosarito Beach, on the main street (Benito Juarez) across from the McDonalds.

For fish tacos we like TJ Juniors which is located on the west side of Popotla Blvd- almost to the Ejido Mazataln intersection (this is a different "Junior" from the one people also rave about near the AM/PM South Rosarito toll road exit). I just ate there Monday night: Fish Combo #2 69 pesos (2 Marlin Tacos, 1 Fried Fish Taco and Fish-water soup... the best part is the five sauces they bring including avacodo and chipotle)

In TJ last time i was there i was very impressed by a Taco stand right thats right as you enter playas de tijuana, across from starbucks in a car wash. Excelent tacos!

Bajahowodd - 7-13-2011 at 06:20 PM

May seem silly to most, but when we're headed South for a few weeks, we wouldn't consider stopping at a taco stand, in worry that our next days' travel will be frequently interrupted.

Gladly and frequently do taco stands when we are not faced with hundreds of miles of driving the next day.

It has happened more than once to us. So, consider us to be wussies.

And then, what about the tamale vendors??

woody with a view - 7-13-2011 at 06:22 PM

that's the reason i will never eat at the c-cktail places in SQ.

tamales, but from only 2 places, EVER!

thebajarunner - 7-13-2011 at 08:48 PM

Real hard to top the carnitas wrap at El Recreo IMO

and, they don't have cervezas, but they never have minded our dragging a few out of the cooler and enjoying them with our meal at the little roadside tables.

vacaenbaja - 7-14-2011 at 05:00 PM

If you are in Ensenada at 10 de Noviembre and Centenario next to the Auto Zone and across the street from the PEMEX
there is a Taco Institution that does a brisk business of almost purely locals since this is off the beaten tourist track.
EVERYTHING is Fresh. The guacamole is prepared with real chunks of avocado not some super watered down green
liquid. They have asada, Al Pastor tortas, etc.
They even maintain a place where you can wash your hands
and separate men and womens bathrooms. The prices are
about a buck a generouly filled taco. the name is EL PAISA
and it is next door to a paleteria Michoacan where you can
have a cool deliscious ice cream if you have room.
The asada is best. I find the Al Pastor a bit lacking in flavour
and for the first time in my life dining in Mexico I had to ADD SALT to my food. I am very salt sensitive person so for me to add salt is a big thing. My only guess is that they go through
their meat so fast that they do not have time to properly season it before it hits the grill. This is an outdoor taco stand.

Someone mentioned that Tacos El Yaqui moved ... can anyone verify this and if so, where did they move to?

We are heading down to Ensenada this Saturday and we always liked stopping there on the way.

sanquintinsince73 - 8-22-2011 at 01:30 PM

Once again, pay attention. Tacos Los Poblanos in San Quintin. By far the best in town. I get full with just two carne asada tacos, these guys really pack it in. I have never, ever gotten sick there. The place is always packed and with a gringo or two always standing there chowing down.

http://youtu.be/WiOlLRQiNw4

Woody, I never buy the c-cktails in SQ either because I might get sick, but rather because I make my own clam, oyster, or limpets c-cktails.
About 13 years ago I did buy a clam c-cktail by the side of the road and the damn thing was $10 and not even half as good as mine. Seems I was eating a cup full of cucumber.

krafty - 8-22-2011 at 01:36 PM

There is a Yaquis 1 y 2, same location. Down the streeet is El Gerente, and we consider it better than Yaquis.

BajaGeoff - 8-22-2011 at 02:24 PM

In Ensenada there is Los Perrones which I believe is run by the same family as Tacos El Yaqui in Rosarito. Had some amazing tacos there when I was down for the Baja 500 in June. If you are heading south through Ensenada on Blvd. Lazaro Card##as, it is on the left side of the street a few blocks before you make the left turn at the Pemex to continue on the 1....

krafty - 8-22-2011 at 02:49 PM

Also had super tacos at the little place on the left of Hussongs in downtown Ensenada

I hit the original "Los Perrones" in Rosarito about 18 years ago. You had to wait in line abot 20 minutes just to order. Great tacos.

Tacos Yaqui in Rosarito

Gypsy Jan - 8-22-2011 at 04:28 PM

Hi Bob H,

As far as I know, Tacos Yaqui is still in the same location.

I posted that Hugo left and opened up his own taco stand about two blocks north on the same street, "Tacos Gerente".

I like Hugo's place better than the Tacos Yaqui that is still in its original location.

You can do a taco tasting; the two places are walking distance

Please report back!

[Edited on 8-23-2011 by Gypsy Jan]

krafty - 8-22-2011 at 04:44 PM

Why Jan, I believe I said the exact same thing in an earlier post . Great minds think alike.

Ensenada Fish Tacos

bajaguy - 8-22-2011 at 05:00 PM

Grilled salmon or tuna....other delights.......

Marco Antonio's is located on Rayon, between 3rd and 4th Streets.

Plan to arrive about 11:30 as they close at 1:00 and the inventory gets low any later than 12:00 noon.

Thank you, Krafty

Gypsy Jan - 8-22-2011 at 05:08 PM

Great minds do think alike!

castaway$ - 8-23-2011 at 10:32 AM

By reading this thread one might be led to beleive there aren't any good taco stands in BCS, I know I've been to some great ones I just need to remember the names, I'll ask the wife and get back with the names.

tiotomasbcs - 8-23-2011 at 01:32 PM

In Todos Santos my two favorites. Chilakos by the Bookstore, carne asada tacos, tortas, & bean & cheese burritos. MMMmm . Also, out on the hill & bypass road south are Fish Tacos El Parguito--fish or Shrimp in a crispy batter w/ excellent crema or white sauce!! Cuidado, la salsa esta muy picante.:O Tomas there are others

El Vergel - 8-23-2011 at 02:43 PM

I was quite taken with some ‘tacos de borrego’ (lamb tacos) along with a cup of consommé de borrego to which we added onions and salsa… at this stand in San Vicente, operated by Gloria. Very Yummie!!!! Best: I bought three nomads a killer lunch, all for $20USD including what Gloria considered a very nice tip! Viva Baja, Baby!
