Kayak fishing in south bay

tripledigitken - 7-13-2011 at 09:22 AM

A very good friend of mine has taken up Kayak fishing here in San Diego. His favorite spot is south bay usually putting in at 24th street marina. His catch are mostly bass and corbina with an occasional halibut. All get released.

He has been trying to get me to go, but our schedules never have coincided until this week. He has two Hobie pedal powered units. I have been paddle kayaking but this was the first time to give the Hobies a try. They are amazing how maneuverable they are with so little effort. We put in at J st. marina, which is next to the facility the ships that carry autos use. That day they were unloading German vehicles, but that is another story.

It was a little windy, so I was going to get a real test of piloting the craft while trying to fish, without going overboard. These boats work almost effortlessly, as I must have looked like I knew what I was doing.

He tells me that he fishes structure, which is either the edge of the dredged channel or the channel marker posts. We headed for some posts in 79 degree water, while looking at the fish finder for both depth and bogies. Damn if as soon as I approached the channel marker there they were stacked up around it, some half dozen fish. He says that the fish 4-6 feet off the bottom are the targets. I choose the root beer colored scampie from about 3 colors he had. In 15 minutes I had 5 fish; 3 corbina, 1 mackerel and 1 bass. After the next 2 hours I didn't catch another fish and only saw a handful on the FF.

What a great first time fishing off a Kayak. He has friends that target bone fish down there, but he hasn't had any success with them. It looks like I might have a new hobby.

No I didn't take any pictures, I thought that might be pushing my luck. Maybe next time I'll snap a few off my Droid phone.

Sounds like fun! For the last month I've been surfing around looking at Kayaks to fish the estuaries here and on the Pac. side. Sometimes I can't take the tin boat because it's either the quad or the boat and the quad I can play on when it's windy. I told my neighbor that I was looking and he has an older & shorter (12') one he's donating to my cause. Couldn't ask for a better neighbor! He's always donating goodies to my cause. So next trip up I'll pick it up:tumble:
Can't even think Hobbie but maybe someday.......

The one I was on was 12'. I'm sure you will have fun on it. The one I used had wheels to aid in launch, and they mount on the Kayak behind you when in the water. I don't have to buy one either!!!

My Bud Olaf caught this 'cuda with a hand line (note the gloves). We were near the Van Damen peninsula in New Guinea.

We were paddling our own boats. All were folding Kleppers. That day we had our sails up.
