TS, Hurricane, TS Dora

Katiejay99 - 7-18-2011 at 01:07 PM

Anyone watching the weather?

There was a post recently by someone (I forgot who) saying that "hurricane season has started early)...... I have felt the same way this season because so far everything has wandered towards the North/Northwesterly direction. Most years they all head due west or west-northwest up until mid August. This is the first year I have ever seen it where we have felt compelled to keep our eyes out for anything coming our way since the very onset of hurricane season.

Does anyone else notice this?

storm on the way

vandenberg - 7-18-2011 at 01:07 PM

This one should stir up some good surf.

But, like Katiejay stated, kind of early for getting this close.
Hope it's not an indication of things to come.

This one you'll have to watch closely, Ed. It has badass potential.

Something to hope for in an otherwise calm Pacific.... And something to talk about night and day.

I don't want "good surf", but I do want the warm water to push on up, with some fish. I will be in La Bocana on the 23rd

Early season Teaser or Player? Let it rain , let it rain! If I may request from the Higher Ups, no tree downing, roof crashing, power outing winds! Our inter shore water temps are still mid 70s. Beautiful clouds today but low Humidity! Goin Surfin. Hasta. Tio

Ah, Dora
She is still too far away to worry
BUT we will all have our eyes on all the weather channels.
Hey woody...you da man

Eli - 7-18-2011 at 10:13 PM

Judy, I will be watching your post, I count on you to tell me what's going on up there.

We have had steady rains off and on for seveal days and most of the night here in Coatepec, I wonder if it is the same storm front getting ready to head North up your way.

Eli - 7-19-2011 at 07:18 PM

I had to share a quote from my daughter who lives in L.B. I Love her perspectives.

"Dora, there is no need to be an overachiever now, being a Tropical Storm is a perfectly acceptable path to choose. Hurricanes are overrated. Trust me, you don't want to become one."

tiotomasbcs - 7-20-2011 at 03:58 AM

I will be doing a little Storm prep manana! Gas, generator, , tarps, food, beer, and vehicles gassed up. Looks like a good chance of a little Action . Go Dora the Explorer--love it KJ. Hope your hija is corecto, Eli. Tio

Katiejay99 - 7-20-2011 at 05:45 AM

Thanks Tio. I do love playing with graphics. We met - do you remember? - at the Cerritos Surf Colony.

It doesn't look like Dora will hurt us any, but always a good idea to be prepared. I am taking down my canopy and tying down anything that may blow away just in case. Remember how we tied down the Palapa at the Hacienda Cerritos a couple of years back? Now THAT was fun!

Shari mentioned their freezing ocean conditions and it's the same here even farther South on the Pacific side of central Baja Sur. After several days of muy feo winds last week the water temp plummeted from the mid 70's to it's current 59°- 60°.

5-9° in mid July! We don't have to worry about tropical activity approaching from offshore until some of these icebergs melt.

Hopefully you love Bobo's too! As they come out after a rain.

El Jefe - 7-20-2011 at 09:33 AM

Latest storm track looks like Dora will miss us completely down here at the end of the world. Too bad, we could sure use the rain. Maybe she will spin off some thunder storms to at least dampen things. There is just too much cool water out there to the SW.

BFS - 7-20-2011 at 01:28 PM

Looks like it is time to go wait it out on the tip. Could be special...

DavidE - 7-20-2011 at 02:15 PM

DATELINE: Todos Santos 2:00 PM:

Thunder, lightning and a soft rain after enduring an overnight low of 88F with 82% humidity.

The steering mechanism for Dora, the upper level winds are unstable so my general impression is that those models are mere suggestions rather than examples of expected routing.

When a hurricane gets trapped over cold water it tends to dump a hellacious amount of water. Dora may well end up flooding the tip.

Time to whet the old knife in preparation to carve another hurricane notch on the handle of my weather staff.

Katiejay99 - 7-20-2011 at 02:35 PM

Yes, this rolling thunder has been very ominous. Power out now - running on battery and Telcel 3g. EEB Mike shows disturbances between here (todos santos) and La Paz.

Leo - 7-20-2011 at 03:52 PM

Hang in there KatieJ. make sure you have some juice left for the vents and enjoy the smell of the desert after the rains.

bajabass - 7-20-2011 at 03:55 PM

We had a real thunder and lightning show over here in La Paz last night, and a slight shower. A little wind and clouds so far today. Let it rain!

Wicked looking mega hurricane
Fortunately it is not headed our way!
As we all keep saying....a little rain would be nice.

DavidE - 7-21-2011 at 07:30 AM

Me no like steering linkage positions for this puppy.

That gigantic bubble of hot air over much of the continental US has reduced barometric pressure readings enough to cause a high degree probably of error in those Dora forecast models.

I am going to offer a guess that states Dora is going to take a slightly more northerly track, but then somewhere around 22 / 30 take an abrupt hook to the right and then slow down or stall, all the while weakening because of cool(er) sea surface temperatures. Like all cyclones Dora is carrying a lot of moisture, and it is rainfall or rather floodfall that I am concerned with. northward to around Loreto.

Pull-ease, this isn't a serious forecast but rather some light chatter. Being an aged student of the guru of meterologists, Harry Geise, allows me to have fun sometimes.

Let's see how wrong I am/was! ;D

Hirrocane Dora May Have Reached Category 5

DavidE - 7-21-2011 at 09:39 AM

A hurricane hunter reported eye wall wind speeds slightly in excess of 156 mph. Keep an eye on this turkey; I for one do not trust the NWS analysi nor long-range forecast.

tiotomasbcs - 7-21-2011 at 10:12 AM

Dora looks awesome! Very shapely, too. Watch out for a right turn. Remember thats what has happened the last few years. I won't mention names?! Every body in the southern tip area & Pacific coastline should pay attention. We will know very soon. Suerte. Tio

If Dora hits that cold water, it will fizzle out quickly.

I believe that as soon as she hits the much colder water of the Baja coast, she will peter out in a hurry.
