Always Pick Your Fights

Gypsy Jan - 7-19-2011 at 11:56 AM

I am a stupid, stupid person.

I opened the door to the pantry to clean the cat box and the new, very needy, Great Dane followed quietly on my heels.

He noticed the cat that lives in the pantry, put his head down to sniff and she swiped her claws across his face.

A fight ensued. The cat is still alive, but traumatized. No blood was shed by the cat.

I have a broken finger and a good amount of blood was shed by me because of several bite marks on my hands while I was prying the dog's jaws open.

That'll learn ya

Dave - 7-19-2011 at 12:06 PM

Surprised. Usually dogs don't fare well in fights with cats.

Eli - 7-19-2011 at 12:10 PM

Holy Moly Jan, who would think that opening a pantry door would lead to such an adventure. OUCH!

If You were to ask my cat, he would certainly tell you all about what a pain it is to live with 4 stupid dogs in the yard. Getting in and out to go to the bathroom is such an adventure for dear ol Tio Gato. I refuse to have a cat box and he does complain, but I always remind him how much smarter he is than them, and then sometimes he leaves me a little reminder of his opinion on my perspective, oh well.

He might have been protecting Mom...

Woooosh - 7-19-2011 at 12:11 PM

At least the gentle giant didn't turn on you. That's a good sign. My dogs have never been introduced to a cat, there aren't many around here (outdoors anyway). I think they would only be curious until the claws came out too. Gad you're all OK.

oh Jan....I'm so sorry for your loss of blood, busted dedo and bites....desgraciado perro! you are a brave woman indeed!...lucky cat

I Do Not Care About the Bites

Gypsy Jan - 7-19-2011 at 02:46 PM

I am angry at myself for being careless.

Keep them open and clean or you may care more than you want to.

Dang scary situation, GJan.
Though I can not imagine you as 'careless'. Your are obviously full of caring.
Find a different adjective and ease up on yourself.
And listen to Dennis about keeping the bites open and clean.

And I take back all of my mean thoughts from about five years ago when you posted a recipe for a Baja liverswurst sandwich where the only Baja ingredient was a white onion. I may be exagerating, but I had been in rural bcs for a year then and was very excited about a possible lws and i was furious that the lw and bread had come from notb. Since then, I have learned to make rye bread and found lw in LP. But I still harboured a negative vibe and I take this opportunity to let that go and tell you that I like to read your posts and you are a very caring person.

nothing worse than an o-line liverwurst grudge. I love the stuff too- with Mayo on soft white bread. Can't stand liver any other way- ok except for duck or goose livers? ;)

That's too funny.

The Cat Died

Gypsy Jan - 7-19-2011 at 07:00 PM

I held her in my arms, in a safe place and I sat with her while the light went away.

I do not blame the dog/wolf in any way

Sorry about your cat. Can't believe the animal you kindly took in killed you pet. It's sad all the way around. A Great Dane/Wolf mix? Be sure to care for those wounds properly.

woody with a view - 7-19-2011 at 07:16 PM

what a bummer. we have 2 catitos and love them like none other. sorry for the drama.

BajaGringo - 7-19-2011 at 07:19 PM

So very, very sorry Jan. Welcoming these furry critters into our homes and hearts comes at a heavy price when they leave us - especially under circumstances like this.

You are a very special person in my book...

All Dogs are Wolves

Gypsy Jan - 7-19-2011 at 07:39 PM

When I call a dog a wolf, I am talking about their
inherited r nature and bloodlines.

They may live with us, but they still know the rules of the wild.

Our cat chose the wrong guy to fight with, even though she had lived without us for years.

DENNIS - 7-19-2011 at 08:01 PM

So sorry, Jan. You did all you could.

goldhuntress - 7-19-2011 at 08:12 PM

My heart aches for you Jan. Take care of yourself.

Mulegena - 7-19-2011 at 09:11 PM

Bless all three of you, human feline canine
Each nature distinct,
yet a deep genetic remembering calls us back, back, back in time
to our more primitive consciousness
when we agreed to share home and hearth, food, affection
and yes, protection.
This call, imperfect compromise as it was crafted eons ago,
echoes within our beings even today.
Bless all three of you, human feline canine
Perfect in your own species' uniqueness.

Could not be better said. It is that simple, what is, just is.

zoesterone - 7-20-2011 at 06:40 AM

So sorry, Jan. You are someone I'd like to meet when we move to Baja soon. I have worked with animals for many years and I can see you have a big "animal heart." One of the most gentle, loving dogs I have ever had was a coyote mix but his nemesis was cats. He loved kids, other dogs, everyone, but have a cat jump into our yard and it was all over. He hated them with a passion and who knows why.

Dogs are not our whole life, but dogs make our life whole.

The Dog is Mourning for the Cat

He walks around with his head down and sniffs her place.

BajaBlanca - 7-21-2011 at 10:29 AM
