I had heard the Mayor of Ensenada shut it down for public use, however the Governor steped in and opened it for public use. What a freaking circus. Reminds me of the time Sempra Energy opened a natural gas plant in Ensenada and the mayor wanted it shut down, eventually soldiers were brought in to keep the Police from closing the place. It's no wonder why things don't get done. Wonder if Mexico has their debt ceiling adjusted.?

http://www.elvigia.net/noticia/cierre-de-aeropuerto-ser-el-2...

Spanish to English translation by Google
Ensenada, B.C. - As of August 27 The airport closed to civilian flights Cypress also aerospace companies that are headquartered there will be evicted.
The notification was made by the Attorney General of Military Justice civilian companies operating at the airport, and she warns them not to retire from the air base will be evicted by the Ministry of National Defense (SEDENA).
The notice was issued on August 12 and is set within 15 days to implement a total ban on all civilian flight in the cypress.
The notification letter has the signature of lieutenant colonel and lawyer military prosecutor, Rodolfo Felix Lugo Lauro, legal representative of the Department of Defense.
Owners and providers of aviation services in the town expressed their disagreement with this measure that will affect their activities, but will also have a negative impact on the economy, tourism, fisheries and provision of emergency services in the most remote areas of the municipality.
To apply the closure of civilian flights would have to be in the city of Tijuana, which will substantially increase costs and represent various operational and practical problems.
"Many of the flights that are medical emergencies or make commercial and business activities, so add travel time by air to Tijuana, and then by land transport makes ineffective and expensive service," said the protesters, who asked remain anonymous, fearing reprisals by the military authorities.

Belie insecurity
The affected denied that the airport does not meet the minimum standards established in the national and international civil aviation, as indicated by the document also reject the argument that hinder air operations of the military in the fight against drug trafficking.
Sought the direct intervention of the governor, Jose Guadalupe Osuna Millan, who had announced the problem of closure of civilian flights in the CIRP had already been solved.
"The delivery of the notice, they said, shows that this situation has been resolved, but on the contrary, it confirms what previously was only an unofficial version."
They called on the municipal, state and federal agencies to prevent the closure of the airport to civilian flights.
Also called productive and social sectors to reject a move without merit and would have a serious negative impact on the community of Ensenada.

Fruitless
On July 13, through a press release, the State Government reported on efforts to prevent the closure of the airport's civil navigation Cypress, "state Governor Jose Guadalupe Osuna Millan, has started steps immediately to the Secretary of Defense, Guillermo Galván Galván, and the Interior Minister, José Francisco Blake Mora, to prevent operations being canceled, "the statement said.
"He is confident that with the support of the federal authority will ensure that the service provided by the airport to The Cypress remain civil and commercial tasks, avoiding being affected economic and social development of this important state."

Notification
"The airport infrastructure is inadequate and insufficient to continue supporting the development of civilian operations in accordance with national and international regulations on the matter also is affecting military operations, as legally mandated military installation that is aimed at achieving the actions set security and defense in the national airspace "(...)" will be permanently revoked permission for the civil air operations in the Military Air Base No. 3 "...

Baffling: CCEE
As a baffling decision, and called the Business Coordinating Council (CEEC) the closing of the Military Air Base No. 3 of The Cypress for use by the private sector, tourism and government.
In an official document of the Ministry of National Defense (SEDENA), we see that canceled the August 27 national civil aircraft operations and / or foreign objects and furniture or licensees will be removed.
CCEE president, Carlos Garcia Travesí-Bosh said it is very rare decision, especially because the president José Guadalupe Osuna Millán had already clausurarían known not to enter such flights.
"I am baffled and really grab me out of play, because supposedly everything was defined by the governor, but verify that information," he said.

times are a changing....

From BPI/BBP:

We have been informed by fairly reliable sources that the Mexican Military has started the process of closing MMES to all general aviation.
We have confirmed that the paperwork has been submitted and is working its way throught the chain of command and they have noted the target date for closure as August 27th (11 days from today) and that is to be the last day for civilian use.
We are in daily contact with the DGAC at MMES who indicate that it is “business as usual at the airport” however check back with them every day as things may change very rapidly. The private sector, including the BPI, has requested that this not happen however, the airport is military and the military has made the final decision regarding this matter. This closure follows the closure of Tulum to civil traffic about a year ago. Located on the Yucatan Peninsula, there was a lot of public pressure to keep it open however the military had the final say.

getting harder and harder to enjoy baja/mexico by private air.

Yeah....I don't get it. It may be a military base, but it's little used....for anything. I can see what amounts to air traffic from my place and it ain't much. More Attorney General Helos than anything else it seems and they don't need a landing strip.

Say goodbye to Cedros Island fishing trips.

There has long been talk about moving the waterfront military bases to other inland locations and I'm wondering if this adjustment could have that goal in mind. :?:

New Ensenada Airport

bajaguy - 8-17-2011 at 07:41 AM

Maybe it's to put pressure on the Mexican Legislature for building a new Ensenada airport.

Several years ago there was talk floating around of a new Ensenada International airport up on the mesa where the free road joins the toll road.

Maybe Tiget Woods will build it to support Punta Brava

According to El Vigia the airport will remain open per the Governor Osuna, they will work with the Military to seperate the Civilian sector from the Military but it will not close to Civilian flights at this time, this was reported in todays paper.

Actually, you make a great point. Ensenada could greatly benefit from a real, actual international airport.

According to today's el Vigia, our local pescado wrap, the airport will stay open. Apparently, the governor contacted the Department of Defense, which in turn "promised" that yesterday's closure order would be rescinded.
