Scorpion experiment

Oso - 8-5-2011 at 03:09 PM

I know we have plenty around here but I haven't seen any lately. I'm sure there are plenty in Baja. Apparently if you put even a drop of alcohol on a scorpion it will go crazy and sting itself to death. Anybody want to try it? Sorry, PETA...

shari - 8-5-2011 at 03:27 PM

can it be gin?

akmaxx - 8-5-2011 at 03:54 PM

Get the UV light and go out at first dark, wow, you will see plenty of scorpions. Don't imbibe your test solution too much before you go hunting.

Peace,

Oso - 8-5-2011 at 03:56 PM

The info I had just mentioned alcohol, so I guess it could even be Jose Cuervo.

jakecard - 8-5-2011 at 04:11 PM

Ya'll should be ashamed of yourselves. That's serious alcohol abuse.

I vote for a squirt gun full of Mescal, for the stubborn buggers, maybe a Super Soaker!!!

woody with a view - 8-5-2011 at 04:39 PM

if you're using cuervo, i'd say that was a great use for that rubbish, although rubbing alcohol would be about the same....:light:

mcfez - 8-5-2011 at 05:33 PM

I certainly would not do that...putting a drop of alcohol on a scorpion . Contrary to this "old wives tale".......applying any amount of alcohol upon a scorpion...it will react in a such a way, looking for moister to remedy the burn. There has been many cases of instant choking of humans because the scorpion will actually spring clear of the ground into one's mouth. They can jump some 7 or so feet.

Poppyc-ck. Scorpions rely only on their claws and venom for defense and killing prey. They're not kangaroos.

shari - 8-5-2011 at 07:55 PM

oh I am soooo going to try this....but Jake is correct...gin is at a premium around here so perhaps some Tonayan may make things interesting(put that on your to bring list Jake!)...and I hope I remember to shut my mouth!!!! I'll try to have my camera handy for this dandy experiment.

MitchMan - 8-5-2011 at 08:09 PM

I heard that if you poor cheap tequila on a scorpion that, just before they jump into your mouth, they sting both your eyes and your neck where the jugular is.

shari - 8-5-2011 at 08:20 PM

that I can deal with but ewwww...scorpion in the mouth...nuh uh

PabloS - 8-5-2011 at 09:12 PM

Bugman - 8-5-2011 at 09:58 PM

I would jump in here with some shred of truth but it would only screw up this thread......... carry on! :P

jakecard - 8-5-2011 at 10:12 PM

I suppose the truth is cool. But it's more fun to disagree on facts.

Eli - 8-6-2011 at 01:17 PM

You know, sometimes Nomads really is fun, good thread you guys!

I wish I had taken better measurements...

vgabndo - 8-6-2011 at 01:39 PM

In all my time in San Nicolas, this was the winner.

Post mortem, I laid him across my palm with his tail at my finger tip, he reached to the creases at my wrist. I just measured that at 6.5". I just measured the boot that made that print and it is 4.5" from the toe to the point where the scorpion's shadow crossed the imprint.

I think that Bahia Conception shrimp is a wannabe!:lol:

Did you know that there are scorpions in Baja which can live under salt water for 40 minutes? Bugman, you know this is real!

:( Oh Worry, worry, worry! Now I'll have to be careful not to spill any Vodka! Of course, since it's almost always raining here, the scorpion won't necessarily have to jump into my mouth to find moisture! When is your next trip down to SF

Jumping Scorpion

henshaw - 8-10-2011 at 05:56 AM

I have Scorpion available to catch the little buggers for $23.95. Please be aware that the nets aren't effective if the Scorpion is on the ground, they must be in the act of jumping and at least 24" off the ground to be effective. Caution, don't miss them.

Marla Daily - 8-10-2011 at 07:52 PM

SAVE OUR SCORPIONS! Please join FRIENDS of S.O.S. Memberships available at no cost to all who love and appreciate scorpions. Be kind to Scorpions week coming to Baja California soon:

They're generally awesome. They do lots of really cool stuff (fluorescing under UV light, complex courtship rituals, parental care, living without food for months at a time, having photoreceptors on the tail so they know day/night even when they're face-down in a burrow, etc.) that make them really interesting.

In a desert ecosystems, scorpions are the apex predators - kind of like wolves in a North American forest or lions on the savanna. As such, they play a major role in influencing the population dynamics of lower trophic levels in their habitat. In ecosystems where they aren't the main predator, they're important prey for other animals; any little scavenger in a desert would benefit greatly from a big, juicy, protein-rich scorpion dinner. Since they're long-lived and so well adapted for harsh environments, they can maintain a relatively constant food supply for larger insectivores in their habitat, while other insect prey (locusts, flies, bees, etc.) tend to be more seasonal. They still have the role of predators in these ecosystems, but they are also prey. In prime scorpion habitat, there can be a fairly high density of scorpions, so they are eating a large number of insects. Since scorpions tend to be highly cannibalistic, they generally don't need a predator to control their populations; they self regulate at an ideal population density, and if the density increases they just eat each other until it goes back down. Thus, you never end up with scorpion outbreaks or swarms.

Cool huh?

Santiago - 8-10-2011 at 08:00 PM

I've often wondered what would happen if you rigged them Carolina style - might be next hot bait?
BTW, I have heard of rigging plastics "Ontario style" - anyone know what that is?
