Mexican Smugglers Nearly Interrupt CA Surf Contest.

Well, the Military can't seem to stop the Popotla Panga Cruise Line even though their barracks is right above it. You'd think the smugglers could at least have a GPS on board. I'm sure the surf competition was seriously distracted by the packages being dumped in the water. ;)

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. – Three Mexican nationals attempted to illegally land their boat on California's Huntington Beach Sunday -- about a mile away from where crowds were forming to watch a professional surfing contest.

Lifeguards spotted the small fishing boat at around 8:30 a.m., but when the men realized they had been spotted, they turned back to sea and were seen throwing a package overboard, The Orange County Register reported. A number of people were on the beach at the time, for the U.S. Open of Surfing. It is believed the men in the boat were smuggling drugs across the border from Mexico. All three were arrested and taken into custody by U.S. Border Patrol agents on suspicion of smuggling and attempting to enter the U.S. illegally.

I live in the So. end of Orange County, there have been
pangas abandoned in the Camp Pendelton, Trestles
area just so. of San Clemente in recent months.
The Border Patrol are seen in the Dana Point Harbor
often. As I remember is costs up to $5000 per person
to take the CRUISE form Popotla to SD/Orange county,
quite a haul, 20 passengers at $5000, It shows the
desperation, willing to go out, sometimes 40=50 mi out
without navagation, PFD's, etc.

Funny. I was invited to watch the US Surfing Open but the drive is too far. Normally the beach is packed out for the event.

I Have an Idea!

A Tecate sponsored "Panga Surfing Contest" in Huntington Beach with the Tecate girls participating in a wet T-shirt competition and handing out trophies.

The surf culture in Huntington Beach would never be the same.
