I will be leaving Friday for my big adventure, which does not entail going to the Alamo to look for my bicycle. I will be going to Argentina (the
country Madonna didn't cry for in her role of the life of Eva Duarte) with side trips to Brazil and Paraguay. I will be attending a conference on the
history of Jesuit missions, but will also be the ugly American tourist visiting mission sites. I have also been invited to participate in a workshop
on frontier history at one of the universities in Argentina. David. K. has offered to post periodic reports for me, and I plan to take lots of photos.
The Jesuit missions of Paraguay, Argentina, and Brazil date to about the same period as the Jesuit missions of Baja California. The seven missions
located in what today is western Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil were established there after 1680, and the last dated to 1707. This was the same period as
the early stage of Jesuit activity in Baja California. There were some major differences. One was the size of the native populations. Some of the
Jesuit missions in South America had populations of more than 7,000 people, much larger than in Baja California. The churches were also huge, compared
to most of the Baja California missions. Several weeks ago I talked about the only Jesuit church in Baja California with three naves, which was at
Comondu. The Jesuit churches in South America all had three naves, and one actually had five naves. I will send reports as often as I can get to a
computer.

AA. I also wish you a safe trip to South America and a safe return. I've heard the SA sweethearts down there are looking to nab big americanos and
keep them there for months at a time.

Thanks. I will send as many reports as I can. The conference takes place in Cordoba, Argentina, on the grounds of the Catholic University. The
university is housed in what once the Jesuit complex, that dates to the 17th century. Should be interesting.

We had a private van tour of Misiones Province in Argentina many years ago, ending at the spectacular Falls Iguazu.
Very enjoyable. The Jesuit missions (ruins) were very impressive. The movie about the missions (The Mission) was quite historical in interesting
ways.
