A couple times I have been in librarys and try to post to various threads and the "Who Can Post?" says anyone, but my post is rejected with a comnment about having to be registered to post .

I don't have my passward to log on from other machines so wanted to just post anonamously and sign the post.

Whad did I do wrong and how do I correct it??

Lou, you have got to remember your password or get a new one. Only the Q & A and Baja News forums allow anonymous posting (I think). You can change your password to an easier one by clicking on 'Your Control Panel' at the top of the page. The new password will be emailed to the email you registered with.

ooops.... sorry, just saw this question Lou.

The posting page says that "all users can post" and "all users can reply" on most forums.

"Users" are people that have usernames, and have signed in.

As mentioned by DK, only the Baja News and Baja Q&A forums allow Anonymous postings ... and they say so on the post/reply pages for those forums.

Also, as DK mentioned, you might want to change your password to one that's easier for you to remember. This is done in the user "control panel" - which you can find the link to near the top-right of your screen after you've logged in.

Contrary to DK's note, your new password is *not* emailed to you, as you should already know what it is. The system emails new passwords that it assigns upon signup, and when you tell the system you've lost your password - as it then reassigns a password and sends the new (random) one out.

DM, I am confused... you say the NEW password is emailed, which is what I said... ??? Then you say one should already know their new password... How would one already know what the new password is, BEFORE the system emails it out??? Is there and ESP feature I don't know about? :lol:

If I change my password, the new one I select will not be emailed to me cause I know it.

If I have him get me a new one, then it's emailed to me.

Well, I changed my password in the account area, logged back on with it?? all OK
turned machine back on a little later and can't get in with the new password/?????

At least it doesn't show show me logged it.

What's next - not showing logged in means no access to my account??

But since I can post here - the server thinks I'm logged it ??? I'm lost again.

I think the instructions need to be rewritten... Since I write backwards, it should be someone else. :lol:

There must be an easier way for this to work. Hey DM, what do you say?

Frankly, why do so many of you use passwords that you can't remember? Try family member names for a password (mother's maiden, child's middle name, etc.). These would be things nobody could guess, even if you feared somebody stealing your name to post here!

That's what I was trying to do - use a password that I can remember not the really different one that is generated. Apparently, something knows this cause I am posting, but I show "not logged in" and of course can't access my account to "subscribe"

And now my time is off by 7 hours. Shows 8 instead of 1 etc.

Well, I rebooted after deleteing th cookie, and still able to post but showing not logged in.

You said that if they change their password in the control panel that the new one is then mailed to them.

It is not, nor does it need to be, as they should already know what it is - since they set it.

The board only mails a password to them when they first signup, or if the system must assign them a new one if they indicate they've forgotten the old one.

Doug, sorry but I was talking about the password (be it temp. or not) that the system creates. Obviously your custom password is what you enter... I guess it was only obvious to me!

To the best of my knowledge:

A) The forum software is functioning just as intended. I cannot presently diagnose any issue on the side of the server/forum.
B) The forum software requires the use of "cookies" to identify users and allow them access, including use of extra features (like U2U).
C) The issues being presented here indicate a problem for FORUM system to read the cookies placed on the USER system.

Thought: Norton/Symantec software is prone to many software/protocol conflicts, and could easily be the issue here. You may want to disable certain Norton features, such as the personal firewall, etc., and see if the problem continues, or clears.

OK Doug, thanks here is what I did

Disabled Norton AutoCheck
Requested new password - didn't work
Closed the site in Foxfire
opened it in IE
logged on with new password
Checked - now again have cookie
Closed IE
Opened site with Foxfire
Logged in with new password
On line - showing logged in - U2U and account all available.

Don't know which did what, but suspect Foxfire not compatable for some reason. But set up using IE, then Foxfire all is well.

Just for your future reference.

Just for a test, think I will close Foxfire - open forumwith IE and change password to one I can remember again and see if this works

Unless there's something new, Foxfire does NOT use the same cookies as IE does. They are in separate places on your machine.

The latest - I closed Foxfire, opened IE, and changed the password. Closed it and opened again and logged on with new password.

Closed IE, opened Foxfire and logged on with the new password. all is well - showing account U2U etc in upper Right corner.

Looks like Foxfire won't put the cookie, but will read the ones IE putts in the cookie file.

Haven't had problems with other sites, adding in Foxfire,but havent changed passwords in them.

Sure sounds like a configuration issue in the firefox setup.

The other question I didn't ask pertains to if you've upgraded (and when) to SP2 for Windows XP? There are a whole slew of issues with XP's latest updates.

I installed SP2 about a month ago and noticed nothing then.

I keep posting so if I sumble on fixes, others can try them if they have similar problems.

This morning, booted up and I'm logged in just like old days??? (on FF not IE)
