?What about Mexicali¿

chrisx - 8-14-2011 at 04:07 PM

What about Mexicali¿
Everybody wants to go to
Loreto
Ensenada
la Paz
Todos Santos
Sierra de ?¿?¿?
Even Mulege
Some people even type about eating dinner in ¨yikes¨ Tijuana.
Nobody ever types about Mexicali.
Does anybody like Mexicali¿
Is anybody afraid of Mexicali¿
Has anybody ever seen Mexicali on the map¿
Has any person and a dog spent a week in Mexicali, so they can say
¨si bueno¨
¨no bueno¨

DENNIS - 8-14-2011 at 04:13 PM

Mexicali is like Los Angeles. That should tell you all you need to know.

sancho - 8-14-2011 at 04:33 PM

There is a site Maryanninmexicali, something close to
that, a couple living there. Seems a bit of a hard
scrabble place. Driven thru many times, don't think
I would consider living there. I would choose TJ
over Mexicali

RichBaja - 8-14-2011 at 05:01 PM

The Mexicans refer to Mexicali as "Infierno". That's all I really need to know.
:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Cold in the winter, hot in the summer.

I like Mexicali. It's hotter than San Felipe in the summer - maybe 10-15 deg, Cooler in the winter by about the same amount, but If I wanted a city near the border, that's probably where I would go.

I have family in Mexicali, its like they put a city in the middle of nowhere, bad weather, nothing to do. About the only thing i would miss if Mexicali was destroyed by an earthquake, is their Chinese food.

I go to Mexicali a lot but not in summer if at all possible just like I now get away from Brawley in the summer, just too dang HOT!! I take off for Rosarito area for those months now. So, from June to middle of October stay away but then all is good in Mexicali, especially after you know your way around.
I use doctors and pharmacy there with good results. I go to numerous places to eat and yes Chinese food down there cannot be beat! They also numerous clubs to go for entertainment which the Valley has very little to choose from. They also have numerous events all year long for more things to do, just depends on what you like to do. Have not had any real problems in Mexicali and I have been going down there for over 40 years. Take Care & Travel Safe-- "No Hurry, No Worry, Just FUN' bajafun777

CortezBlue - 8-14-2011 at 08:57 PM

I started driving through Nuevo Mexicali and it is very nice. It feels and looks like the US.

The homes are extremely large and luxurious.

Bajafun777 - 8-14-2011 at 09:11 PM

Yes there are CortezBlue, just enter through the East Port and head east once you cross then explore,LOL. They have some malls and like you said nice homes along with many places to eat. Take Care & Travel Safe---"No Hurry, No Worry, Just FUN" bajafun777

Being a big city over one million people, Mexicali is worth a visit.

1) visit the 'old town,' including Chinatown
2) nightclub district along Ave. Rio Cajeme, on the Eastside
3) a big shopping mall
4) two big parks; one with a zoo. Another with a big sports center near the university.
5) view the Baja State Capitol building and judicial complex

Fun to visit in Winter when the weather is nice.

zoesterone - 8-15-2011 at 05:44 AM

I don't think the "yikes" about eating dinner in Tijuana applies these days. Tijuana, from all accounts, has experienced something of a renaissance with really good restaurants, shopping, spiffing up and lots to do. It isn't a city of just the red light district and jokes anymore. Even Bobby Flay, well known chef who visited recently, said he was astounded at how nice it was and nothing like he had "heard". So, with everything, seeing is believing.

Well maybe you need to apologize to us all....for coming in here with your insulting remarks toward us...half a year ago. Fat lady in a red car.....drunks...so on. Then I'll leave you alone. Till then....I will just keep reminding all here that you're a insulting punk.

Mulegena - 8-15-2011 at 08:32 AM

Family just returned to Mulege from a week in Mexicali.
They could not WAIT to get back south-- said Mexicali made the sweletering summers in Mulege seem like eating ice cream in Alaska-- Mexicali's HOT!

That being said, brother-in-law had extensive dental repairs done in a clinic in Mexicali
and is very, very pleased. Anybody interested, I'll share doctor's contact information. u2u me.

Also, Dr. Manuel Cota the veterinarian from Sta. Rosalia trained at the University of Mexicali. Because of the city's proximity to the US many of its professors are educated in the states
so students benefit, he says.

Bajajorge - 8-15-2011 at 08:47 AM

:no:Don't like no stinkin city. No matter which side of the border it's on.:barf:

Barry A. - 8-15-2011 at 09:39 AM

We lived in El Centro for 13 years----------went to Mexicali all the time----at least 5 times a month, mostly to dine at night, winter and summer. Great restaurants, if you know where they are. The more I went to Mexicali the more I liked it.

But it has been quite a few years, now, since I have been there.

It is a BIG CITY, so take that into consideration!!! Like the Imperial Valley, winters are heaven, weatherwise, but summers from May 15 to Sept 15th + - are BRUTAL, as is the entire Imperial / Mexicali Valley. We are talking 115+ days, and 90 degree nights, in mid-summer. It's those HOT nights that really get too you.

We are a little crazy, and we loved it.

To be more precise, it is a cross between Los Angeles and Bakersfield, but without the Crystal Palace.

Only with the A/C fully charged and blowing at jet speed. The upside is that you can buy a frozen pizza at the market, duct tape it down on top of the roof of your car and it's ready to eat by the time you get home...

Ohh yeah....you like to use that Convection Heat. I prefer the enclosed oven type for my cooking, so I leave a raw turkey in the trunk for no longer than two trips to the beer store and it's ready to be served.

 That's funny! I got the same response from a friend in San Felipe once. We were talking on the phone and I told him that it was 18F here in WA. There was a long pause and then he asked, "How do you breathe??" Guess it all depends on what you are use to!!

Barry A. - 8-16-2011 at 08:15 AM

In 13 years in El Centro I do not believe that the "official" temp ever exceeded 120 degrees, and that was extremely rare. 110 to 115 was more common.

My back yard weather station confirmed those "official" readings, but sure, in the sun, outlandish temps are a reality--------nobody sits out in the sun in summer in the Imperial/Mexicali Valley except mad-dogs and Englishmen!!! and the unfortunate Farm Workers.

Living in the Imperial Valley for the past 19 years one gets to know Mexicali very well. There are great restaurants, people and entertainment in this town.

The desert West of Mexicali is an off roaders paradise. I have participated in quite a few races in the laguna salada. I'm fortunate enough have have made some lifetime friends that live in Mexicali. Yes, in the summer it is hot hot and hotter. Fortunately they have some nice places where the beer is super ice cold like Heidelberg restaurant and La Conga ( best chavelas anywhere). The taco stands are pretty hard to beat anywhere in Mexico and evryone knows about the Chinese restaurants.

We like the winter baseball and follow the aguilas when in season. These games are a blast with lots of good entertainment and food at reasonable prices. Also the bakeball team Soles are another great sporting event. Fiestas de Sol is a great event put on during the fall.

It is like anything in life, it's what you make out of it and put into it

Mexicali

freediverbrian - 8-21-2011 at 04:23 PM

When closing the house in Gonzaga and driving home we stop in SF except for easter and race weekends when we go to mexicali and get a room (cheaper than SF) and a meal ( Cheaper than SF)and cross to the states early . not in the summer smarter than that.
