My Son in law wants to pull his camping trailer with his 3 rail motorcycle trailer in the back, from Colorado to San Felipe this winter. Can he pull 2 trailers in Baja?
Where do we look up the rules?

Yes, you can pull a double trailer in Baja.

I asked the same question a year ago and Irene from Posada Don Diego asked a Federal officer the question. His answer: "No problem, max length 20 meters, (66 ft), make sure that the lights all work".

Don't know about other states but CA requires a Class A license (commercial with doubles endorsement). If your state doesn't have that requirement I would imagine CA would honor your license.

You can pull doubles in California as long as the 1 attached to the truck is a 5th wheel. My neighbor up the street pulls a 5th wheel trailer with a flatbed behind it with the quads and motorcycles, looks strange and don't try to back-up.

CA will honor your state's liscense requirements if you are just passing through. The CA Class A requirement is for CA residents. I asked a CA Highway Patrol sargeant and that was his response.

AZ is okay, too. Can't remember where I found the answer. My original plan was to travel thru NV, then AZ, and cross at San Luis until the CHP sargeant clarified the travel status thru CA.

Doubles are illegal in some states, Oregon I know for sure. Given what I've seen on Mex 1, if it rolls you can can pull it. Whether you should pull it is up to you. As mentioned above, a 5th wheel hitch gives you much greater control over the trailer load, the tongue weight sits directly over the axle. Make sure the rig has the GVW and the brakes to handle the load. Its easy to get something rolling compared to trying to stop it.

I was a truck driver at one time hauling singles, doubles etc and have hauled boats up and down highway one, but I would not try to haul doubles here......no way.

One of the scariest sites I saw on Baja 1. We met a tractor pulling two 53' Propane tanks coming over the Three Sisters just before Santa Rosalia The thing looked like a freight train coming at us.

Not to hijack the thread, is that why the CHP that pulled me over while towing at 65mph by stockton didn't give me a ticket? It is legal to tow at 65 in Oregon unless your a semi T/T.

Why did he pull you over? The maximum speed in CA is 55mph if you are towing anything. Bus, car, truck or TT doesn't matter.

He pulled me over for doing 65 while towing my boat, he asked me where I was headed and I told him we were heading to Baja for vacation then he asked if it waslegal to drive that fast while towing in Oregon and I told him it was (and it is), then he wrned me and let me go.

I don't know why CA is so backward on this. I think it would be much safer to have all vehicles traveling at or near the same speed.

I agree! I think it is far more dangerous to force the trucks to drive 55 and people towing, especially when merging.

that's why we roll with KC's blazing in the early AM. you can actually see the vehicles coming at you around the next curve, unlike in the day..... the critters are illuminated, too, 100 yards away.

When I had my big truck I perfered to run in the early hours less traffic and very few Smokeys. I had a pair of aricraft landing lights under the bumper to discourage the K.C light crowd. :lol:

No, this is not legal in AZ or NM. Of course I didn't KNOW that when I did it. Its like when the coyote runs off of a cliff but doesn't fall until he KNOWS it....
Pulled just fine from Dixon, NM to Flagstaff, AZ and even at 57' in length and who knows total weight I still got 13 mpg doing 65. YMMV. H.

Many many years ago when I was "looking around" on the east cape, I came across a converted Greyhound bus. It was one of those, 'scenicruisers' styles. Texas plates if I remember right. Was towing a pickup and the pickup was towing a trailer with toys on it or was that a boat. memory is getting bad.

No. Slid right through. Had I been stopped, I would have pulled the Chevy off of the flatbed, tied the white cargo trailer onto it and had the wife drive it.... H.
