Pompano Sighting!

BajaGringo - 8-14-2011 at 10:12 PM

Well, actually it was more like an email I received from Pomp with a nice note about his travels across the flooded plains from where he headed up farther north to Canada for some more fishing. The remote location gives him limited internet access and so he asked if I would pass this along for those of you who had asked about him.

He is traveling this summer with his very good friend Randy who is also in charge of keeping the rum under lock and key.

In his email he sent some photos of their travels including maps of some of their stops in Canada, some great fishing, naps, good eating and lots of fun. He also shared that what a great life-long friend Randy has been and included a few older photos with Randy and their adventures through the years.

Here is Pompano's note he said I could share with the forum and I will link his photos below that. I wish I had his knack for photo commentary but for that we will all just have to wait for Pomp to make it back...

From Roger:

I hope all of you are enjoying good times in Baja as usual.

And yes, I'm missing checking in on Nomads with my morning coffee. As you know, the site is a great newspaper on what's going on in Baja...my second home for over 30 years.

I'm in another Baja now..just substitute pines and fresh water for cactus and salt.

Unfortunately (but in reality maybe a blessing..?)... I have almost no access to the internet up here in northern Canada. Am at a very remote cabin of mine without satellite contact, but float-plane back and forth to a main outpost now and then..like today.

I'll check in with BajaNomads when I get a few hours to spare.... however I fly with a native pilot buddy and we're on his working time....but I'll try to post some catch-up news and what's been happening with Pompano. It's not really Baja-related and I doubt will be of much interest to Baja lovers but maybe some fishermen and RVers.

In a nutshell since early June:

Return trip to Tuscany, which was heaven on earth... then Christmas Island (way western Pacific) for snook with lifelong amigo, Randy, then RVed from San Diego to ND for flood repairs to my Duk Shak & volunteer help in Minot, ND... then fishing at Lake of Woods, NW MN for a couple weeks with Randy again...(and pumping out another soggy home on Rainy River), then float-planed Way Up North...to hell and gone north of the US/Canada border to my rustic cabin near Wollaston/Hatchet Lakes. Extreme northern edge of Saskatchewan next to Manitoba border, where I've been enjoying a fine summer catching/releasing mucho fish, writing stories, taking photo canoe & boat trips, jotting down some experiences, editing hundreds of pics on my laptop & storing on discs......and of course feeding the bears....

Had a little excitement 2 days ago when a 3 black bears (a big sow and 2 growing offspring) ravaged my cabin when I was out on the lake. What a mess...sugar, syrup, and my boots were high on their menu. I scooted them out and took away their kitchen passes. Well...maybe I didn't exactly 'scoot' them out, more like left all the doors and windows open so they could amble off without having me for dessert.

Living next to nature is great...living 'with nature' is not always so great.

Please extend my sympathies in advance to all on Nomads..cuz I ain't going away and will posting again when I get back to civilization. I expect to return to Baja sometime in early November and send in a sunrise photo from Coyote Bay.

Hasta la vista, amigos.

Best regards,

Roger

Didn't even notice until you said something. Sweet!

Vince - 8-15-2011 at 08:52 AM

All was well on our last trip to Coyote Bay 2 weeks ago except for the wet furnace like heat. Caught plenty of Dorado and had plenty of fun. Maybe they will still be around when you return in November.

All I Can Say About the Canada Pics

Is "Brrr!"

Born and raised in the South (Southern California), all I know about snow is that it is something you drive/fly to visit with ski equipment.

We have a good friend who lives in the mountains ninety miles north of Vancouver, where bears regularly visit her property.

Her husband recently had a heart problem that put him in the ICU unit in Vancouver and she drives down to visit him everyday.

I am just grateful that for her this is summer, not winter.

STILL CHECKING YOUR BOOTS???

Before you left you posted a wonderful photo of an arachnid that you had found in one of your boots and mentioned that you always check your boots before putting them on and you were glad this time that you did.

I want to applaud you Pomp. You are truly a caring man. Why, had you inserted your foot you may have damaged, injured or possibly even KILLED that little fellow, but no, you have taken the time for years to prevent that from happening to another living thing.

You’re a HERO in my book Guy. Just wanted you to know...
