Planning a tent camping trip to San Felipe in 4 weeks,
thought I might check out the new pavement and go so. of
of Puerticitos for the first 2 days.
I understand Campo Costilla is 6 mi or so below Puerticitos.
I have a kayak, but aren't sure I want to drag 14' 60#
of plastic down. Is the shore fishing worth the effort?
if so would throwing swimbaits, Worm kings work? or
metal such as a Krocadiles? Is 12# test adequate? I imagine the bottom to be
rock so throwing a chunk of squid out would result in
getting hung up. Any other camping places besides Costilla
in the area or places to shore fish?

I had a popper ripped out and broken off at La Costilla I was using 25lb. Maybe a steel leader?

For surf fishing rocky bottoms I prefer using a Bull Durham sack filled with sand instead of a lead pyramid sinker. Not too many people roll their
own these days (at least not tobacco) but you can buy packs of the empty sacks at some tackle shops. Being flexible, they can often break free of a
snag, but if not you just keep tugging and it will rip, spilling the sand and saving the rest of your tackle. Then you've lost 10 cents worth of
cloth instead of a buck's worth of lead plus tackle.

swimbaits on 8# test from shore for triggers are a blast. They do like to bite the tails off so you might put some squid or such on a Kroc and

Yes you will get hung up if you try to drop bait to the bottom around there and the sand sack is a great idea! On the other hand, most of what you'll
catch are spotted bay bass and triggers and they are not too shy about presentation and likewise, I'd go with heavier line since they really won't
care. Those are sharp rocks that shred line so I usually go 20# which gives me some breathing room. If you catch one of these http://www.mexfish.com/fish/pngrays/pngrays.htm make sure to carefully fillet it....amazingly tasty fish! Sierra and Barracudas should be off
the points and if lucky, some Corvina will cruise by. Silver Krocs is just about a safe bet for anything around there.
