Vet Clinic ahuge success in Asuncion

the Ministry of Health sent a team of vets to Asuncion today from Sta.Rosalia for their first free vet clinic here. It was a huge success and the vets worked from 9:00 in the morning till 9:00 in the evening and managed to fix 7 cats and 42 dogs as well as a couple emergency surgeries and we vaccinated 200 pets for rabies!!!! Whew....I'm bushed and smell like dogs! I want to thank Mulegena and Surfdoc for assisting in the operating room...you guys rock!!!
Here is my siamese bobcat on the table...yeah..no more kitties

amazing there were no dogfights and nobody got bit

the kids were totally stoked about watching the surgeries...they stayed in the operating room for hours watching.

We are back at it tomorrow morning...this will be fantastic for the village...way less abandoned puppies from now on.

I am so so very happy for the lucky dogs. I hope a few males were done. So much easier for a snip snip.

Thank you, Vet Team for doing what you love to do-- travel around and give health care to our county's animals.

The Municipality of Mulege (county) is the largest in Baja Sur; its range is from Guerrero Negro to just north of Loreto and spans the breadth of the peninsula from Pacific to the Sea of Cortez. The region encompasses some of the most varied geography and remote areas in Baja-- mountain ranches and fishing villages that are accessed by boat, horseback or dirt track or pot-hole paved roads.

That these doctors are willing to make the effort to provide their care here is wonderful and a testament to their love and dedication to their profession. How many of us can say we love our job so much?

Bahia Asuncion is so happy they're here. A big thank you to everyone: the doctors and technicians, to Surfdoc who dusted off his medical skills to lend a hand, to Shari our ad hoc community liason Gal Friday and official photographer. A special deep thanks is due to the people of Bahia Asuncion who so enthusiastically turned out and brought their pets to the clinic. It started small and kinda quiet, then as word got around town, well, the road leading to the clinic looks like the loading dock to Noah's Ark!

that's really cool. we trapped one of our feral cats in a squirrel trap and took her to the Feral Cat Coalition in SD to be fixed when she was 3ish months old. they clip an ear tip to easily ID that the cat has been through the program. well, in the previous 3 months out little gatita had already been thru the ordeal. the belly scar was the clincher.

it WAS pretty funny watching pick ups pull up with 5-6 dogs in the back...many of whom have never been in vehicles before. I'd say the dogs we saw were about 40% pitbull types, 50% chihuaha, and10 % fluffy poodly things...only 2 out of 42 dogs were males....drat. One of my jobs was to try to convice people to have their pets fixed when they came for rabies shots...it was a tough sell....back at it again today! arf arf

When I ride through the neighborhoods and see all the animals that have been spayed/neutered I know that things will get better.
Last night I saw Chuck. Back in June we were gathering at La Playita to set up a clinic, when this male dog sauntered up and introduced himself. We named him Chuck, put him on a lead and snipped him. He never knew what happened, but he was singing soprano when he left!

Happy this worked well, this time, and appreciate the good work that these clinics provide.
However, we're legally required to keep paperwork on each animal which includes its owner's name and identification. With this in hand the responsibility for the decision for surgery rests with the owner. Best not go 'round gathering up animals as I've seen happen with unhappy consequences when the owner appears and the clinic has to explain why their animal was neutered without permission.

Chuck is a village dog owned by no one and everyone. He just hangs around waiting for a hand out from the restaurants, etc.

I should add that he really doesnt have a name but we had to put something on the paperwork, so we decided Chuck fit.

isn't it amazing how the men will NOT allow their males to be sterilized !!!! Their agast faces when we asked them to fix their dogs in la bocana said NO way NO way No how.. We also had almost all females.

so glad the clinic went well - hope someone was secretary to take down all the names for the vets !!

so they stayed another day - wonderful !! aren't we so very lucky to have this service now ?!!

I played secretary...only without the high heels and skirt! I got all their info and we will be in touch...they really enjoyed being here and got treated real well and left with a big cooler chocked full of yellowtail!

YES, Shari...ya done good. I'm sure that science has flogged this idea all over the map, but my sense is that for a male to protect the family jewels runs a lot deeper than the fear of the injury. The primary job of we on this side of the chromosomal divide is to impregnate. I can't imagine the level of unconscious programming that exists in a male relative to "the package". I judge that in a more carefully examined life, men have abandoned their "lizard brain" fears and learned to use good sense in the husbandry of ALL animals. I can't believe that Mexican men would allow their horses to breed indiscriminately.

As with so many other wonderful things we see, Mexico is getting the job done bit by bit. What's wrong with making Bahia Asuncion a happier animal place for a few years?

Great slideshow, those are some good looking doggies! It's great to see the folks taking responsibility and I loved the kids getting an education at the same time. Where can I get one of those fine red BA T shirts I saw? I'd be stylin in one of those.
