ATV importation, anyone do it and have info?

choyero - 8-29-2011 at 06:38 PM

I am looking to import a used atv/quad into Mexico. Anyone know how to do it/where to do it/how much it costs on a percentage basis? How long does it take?

I am assuming that you would do it at the border in the declare line.

Thanks

Bringing a MC or ATV to Baja they usually look at the registration to make sure it's not stolen.

You do not need to import the ATV, but make sure that you have a title or any registration. In Colorado we did not register them unless we rode on Forest Service Trails, so it was no problem, but they did check my title.

In the past we have smuggled 4 atv's across the border. If they are staying down in baja, they do need to be imported to be legal. Same with a vehicle, however they don't really enforce either. Several of my friends have been recently stopped by fedrales, and were asked how long the vehicle has been in baja, as well as for there tourist visa's or fm3/2. All of the people had tourist visas, so they were able to claim they where on a trip. They are starting to crack down on expats driving foreign plated vehicles it appears.

The main reason I need/want to import it is it is a tax write off for my mexican taxes.

They aren't licensed so they're considered as personal property. I would assume you need to pay an import tax, though.

In that case just take it to the declare line and show them the title and what it's worth or what you paid for it.

If you want to be fully legal talk to Danny Velasquez in Ensenada. It's his business and contact info is provided below. He speaks perfect English and is a good guy to work with.

you dont need an importer for this

just go to the border declare lane
and import

no sweat

From what I am hearing from an importer I've used many times. Individuals can't import self propelled vehicles by themselves, they need to use an importer. Takes 10 days for them to process the paperwork, and the quad must be inspected and be onsite for the duration of the processing.
