internet at Playa El Burro

absinvestor - 8-30-2011 at 04:11 PM

Does anybody have a contact for a Hughes Net rep in the Mulege area? I am trying to get internet at our palapa in El Burro. People have it in El Burro and at Playa Coyote but the owners are in the states and I haven't been able to get a local contact phone or email address. I don't have the equipment etc so starting from scratch. Thanks

Russ - 8-30-2011 at 04:22 PM

What about the guy that has the store, restaurant & internet across from the gas station and N. of Saul's Palapa restaurant (RIP)? I've heard a lot of rally good comments about him. If he doesn't do that I'll bet he know who does.

Russ,

What about the son of the wonderful man that passed last year ?
Does he still do Hughs installs ?
Wasn't he just north of you ?

Bob and Susan - 8-30-2011 at 06:29 PM

he can't get eqiupment...
wayne was a certified installer and could cross the border

actually you cant get hughes equipment or strat service here
you need it shipped to a stateside address

no one here can supply the parts

at this point you would probably be better off using the geko restruant across fron the pemex
since you didnt set up internet before you left
they have great service

Hughes Net Installer

Mula - 8-31-2011 at 06:26 AM

Wayne's son Mario is still doing Hughes Net Installs.

You have to bring all the equipment from the states.

He lives in San Lucitas just south of Santa Rosalia, is a college kid so usually only takes appointments for week-ends and when he can find a car to use.

I bought my systems from Craig's List - 2 - to make sure I had equipment and parts and did not do a contract with Hughes for a time period. I just do a $60 a month no contract connection.

Best money I ever spent.

chupa- thanks- I did get Mario's email from a gal at Posada Concepcion but so far he hasn't responded to my emails. To Russ- I know Sals store in town but didn't know he had internet at the palapa restaurant- I'll stop in to see him. To everybody else that responded- thanks- I do eat frequently at Geiko's and use their internet. However, I still do some limited stock trading and it is about 16 miles from the palapa to Geikos so to make the trip twice a day ie before the stock market opens and after it closes is a bit much. I checked craigs list and there are several choices for hughes net equipment- being a novice I just don't know what I need. I'll be returning to the states in late october for the holidays so I'll be able to get the equipment but hoping to get some feedback from mario as to exactly what I need to bring back. Thanks again for the help. Ron

Russ - 8-31-2011 at 03:25 PM

Last I heard Mario has flaked out. No one here has been able to contact him in at least 4 months. I hope it ain't true! Maybe he doesn't like the road but he's not answering his phone either. He is experience and a good kid.
edit: Here's the last # I have for Mario 615-155-0759

Bob and Susan - 8-31-2011 at 03:25 PM

watch out what you buy used

remember the antenna has a radio
it goes out

the modem is like a lightbulb
it goes out

you need a correct crimper for the cable for a correct connection

you should be commissioned for sat mex 5 here in mulege
for the best service

after that aim and go

Wayne Davy was one of my really good friends and I had really hoped that his step-son Mario would take the horse by the reins and work the business that Wayne had set up for him, but it has not happened and Mario has let things slide.
The most knowledgable person actually serving Hughes Net in Baja is Allan Thompson and he will help you get set up and going. His website is here and he is a frequent contributor on this forum.

What happened to Max ('Bajabus')?

Bajabus used to be the satellite Internet wiz in Baja Sur... solar power setups, too!

Abs,

Talk to Carlos. He is the owner of the Gecko Restaurant and also runs the internet shop there. He is a wizzard with computers and probably has some contacts from you. He may even come across come used Hughes Equipment.

Don't confuse your Sauls. Saul Davis, who has the tienda in town, is not the Saul that was referred to as the former restaurant owner of Saul's, the former restaurant that was next to the 11/7 store. The 11/7 Store is called something else now but I don't remember the name. Saul Davis has nothing to do with computers and the other Saul has gone, I believe.

I have a neighbor that was using Hughes net then Telcel and now is seeing how MoviStar works. So Far she says the Movistar is better than Telcel and covers most of Chivato and is cheaper. I have no idea if it works inside Conception. But someone should check it out.

tiotomasbcs - 9-1-2011 at 02:00 PM

Allan Thompson is good. I think he is working in the US but still has business associates in Todos Santos. Look on Baja Western Onion. He has summer specials listed in his ad and might have stock?? Check it out. Tio

willyAirstream - 9-1-2011 at 02:10 PM

Ron, hooking up a sat system is easy, You just need a sat. finder or alot of patience. see my u2u. Another option would be to contact a neighbor and share his/her sat. connection. You would only need an access point off his computer and possibility, but not likely, a remote antenna on your end. A $ 50 investment and you split his monthly costs.

absinvestor - 9-1-2011 at 02:39 PM

Russ- I think you're right about Mario. He hasn't answered my emails or my phone messages. Bob and Susan- thanks for the heads up on used- all I need is to bring equipment that doesn't work!! Toneart- Thanks. I have talked to Carlos. He is very helpful and I try to give him whatever business I have but he doesn't have any Hughes Net contacts. Tio- Thanks for the lead on Thompson- I'll contact him. WillieAirstream- got your u2u. Thanks. The two neighbors I have that have Hughes are in the States. It is my understanding that both have tried to share in the past but it has caused hard feelings due to one using more bandwidth etc. I would sooner have my own. I may take you up on your offer to assist with installation- I really appreciate it and will make it worth your time!! Also to Russ- I didn't realize Moviestar had internet. I'll check them out. If I have missed anybody it is not intentional. I appreciate all the info. Ron

Max did almost all his installations in the cape area. Plus I believe does not do Baja installs any longer, aside from supporting his existing customers.

Just a quick note before I go...

I emailed Mario Alonso a couple weeks ago about installing an up-dated Hughes 7000s modem that was mailed to my US address. He got back to me promptly and we set a date for later this fall.

Him and Wayne did my Hughes.Net sat-internet work for many, many years. Always a pleasant experience.

the email address shown above is correct.

Dunno about the other cases mentioned, but sure hope this helps.

absinvestor...I will have wi-fi just south over the hill..in Coyote Bay...you can use it free for checking your stocks later this fall.

My pleasure to help, Ron. And many thanks for the gracious offer.

But forget the Hughes bill...it's %^$# outrageous anyway at $69 a month ...and makes me drink rum whenever I get one...

I'll settle for a firm handshake and a cold one on your beach...

Pompano- we bought Tom and Ruth's place at El Burro. Stop by anytime for a cold one. Unfortunately, the freezer won't freeze ice cream (at least this time of the year) so unless we meet in town we'll have to enjoy looking at the one you are eating in the picture!! Ron and Patty

Hey, congratulations on a great piece of Paradise On The Beach! I've been there a few times with Co-pilot and some other amicos from Italy who have a place over at Naranjos. You're setting sail for some good times ahead...bon voyage.

You know, I just remembered an ice-cream wagon that came by Ana's while we were playing poker there last spring. We'll flag him down for sure. Hasta pronto and welcome to the Bay!

BCSTech - 9-8-2011 at 11:41 AM

Sorry, missed this topic until just now.

To follow up on a few posts in this thread:

a) Everything comes from the US via San Diego. We can deliver parts and systems to Mulege and most other Baja cities.

b) Mario has been largely unavailable. I tried to use him for a couple of installs but could not get a response. Heard that he is wrapped up in school and has some other issues.

c) Max/Starband may be backing off Baja since Starband changed satellites and reduced footprint here. I'm also a certified SB installer but I don't keep track of it.

d) We have an installer in Loreto. It's a ways but he'll come up if someone covers his travel time to/from. I can also support self-installs with remote consulting services.

e) HN7000S modems work with 1 and 2 watt transmitters. The 2 watt transmitters are shipped with the larger 0.98 and 1.2 meter dishes and support higher service levels.

f) There are some HughesNet rebates I can help you get because I can activate new service directly through my HughesNet dealer account. We also assist with existing accounts; remote troubleshooting, parts, satellite reassignments, reactivations, etc.

g) Thanks for the positive nods. I really appreciate it, and don't take it for granted.

absinvestor

this is the "correct" solution to your problem...

bcstech

no others will work correctly

Pescador - 9-9-2011 at 01:39 PM

I agree. I can install, have done my own and worked with Wayne but I am retired and don't want to do it as it gets in the way of my fishing. I have talked on numerous occasions with Alan and he is by far the best deal going down here now.

I think the equipment for sale in San Lucas is from the Orphanage which closed their doors and therefore may be a pretty new system as it was put in within the last few years. You may want to have someone take a look at that equipment and make sure the price is right.

Welcome to Baja Absinvestor, I left Colorado years ago and knew that when I gave away my snowshovel that I was where I wanted to be.

That info is correct, I believe...I was going to buy it for a RV install, but changed directions...and continents!

Welcome to the wide world of wringing your hands over sat-woes.

edit to add:

Come November, I can report back on Mario's participation.

Pompano - 11-16-2011 at 07:16 AM

Well, I made it back to Coyote. And had contacted Mario via email to tell him I would arrive Nov 8th. He mailed back that he would ready for the Hughes re-connect for the season...with my new upgraded 7000s modem from Hughes Co. (I usually put my account on hold for 6 months a year to save a few hundred bucks while I am not using it.)

I was a little late driving into Mulege on the 8th, but there was Mario in his old, grey pickup/topper..waiting on the highway next to the higway Pemex just south of Mulege.

He followed me to the casa in the Bay and we immediately got down to brass tacks...and then...Carumba!

We could not find my new 7000s modem...dang it.

We tore the motorhome AND boat apart..nada.

Mario made two separate trips to mi casa on the 8th and 9th to try various modems that he had...no luck there, either.

Second visit with novia.

Very weird event...maybe Murphy's Law? I somehow have misplaced my new Hughes 7000s modem that the company sent to my address Up North.

Can't quite figure out what happened to it, though? I packed it into one of the motorhome's basement compartments when Up North..and saw it was still there upon my arrival in San Diego.

While at the RV resort I stayed at in San Diego, those compartments were unlocked, but I highly doubt anybody would heist it...as it would not be any good to anybody but myself, being programmed to my account, codes, etc. At least that is MY understanding?

Besides, there were far more expensive items in those compartments that would catch a thief's eye before a cardboard box from Hughes.

A full set of Big Bertha & Callaway golf clubs for example...Note: which I now would gladly make a partial trade for a 7000s modem! (Modem = about $150, golf set = about $1500. Addictions are expensive!)

Whatever the case, stolen or just lost, the fact remains that I am missing the 7000s modem and the house is without internet service at the moment.

WANTED: I am looking for a usable, working, 7000s modem if anyone has one...loaner, for sale, for trade, whatever?

I sent an email to BCSTech in the hopes they can provide me with one..and install. I'm keeping all my fingers and toes crossed. It's a real pain to make a 30-mile round trip to get online. And worse yet to make a 1300 mile round trip to San Diego to get another modem.

And that's my tale of woe for today. Anybody got any help or advice for me?

I'm hunting down Murphy of Murphy's Law...and strangling him.
