Huitalcoche in Xico

Eli - 8-30-2011 at 06:06 PM

In all the years I have lived and traveled thru out Mexico, I have never been at the right place at the right moment in order to try Huitalcoche. Well, por fin, today was the day. Now I get why everyone who has eaten it raves about this ugly lookin fungus that grows on corn.
Today, I visited the lovely little Colonial Town of Xico Vera Cruz. Found a very fine resturant and I was about to order the Chili Nogada when my friend suggested I try the Huitalcoche wrapped in a chicken breast fillet covered with cheese fondue sauce.
Man oh man, hot diggidy damn, this is worth putting on your bucket list if you haven't already tried it, do so. It's Yummy! (Although I gotta admit, still ugly, looks like what it is moldy ol fungus, who would have thought it could take soooooo good).

There is a restaurant in TJ that serves it. I can't recall the name, but they also served it last year at the "BAJA BY THE SEA EXPO" in San Diego.
I suppose we could look it up by searching Andrew Zimmern's show on the Food TV show. He exposed the restaurant on the one show that he took his crew to Baja.

Lucky dog you!
I have bought the Huit en late and fresh bought at Super Ley en la corn cob. Simply used it for quesadillas at home cuz a little squeemish. Great taste, not so pretty.
Way cool to have it in a truer environment.

If I were a person who kept a bucket list, eating anything in Veracruz would be on it.

Happy travels Sara, hope I get to LB this summer to see your beautiful gallery again!

CP, apart from the stuff being so yummy to eat, and you are right, this is the place to eat it, it's just plain fun to say "Huitlacoche in Xico".
Paula You would love it; a beautiful little town to visit, the waterfalls are amazing, in fact the amount of water in Vera Cruz is astounding after all my years in Baja. I plan to be in the gallery much more this coming season, if you make it back down my way, let me know you are coming and I will make a point to be there.

Guacamaya's in San Jose del Cabo has good huitlacoche quesadillas, etc.

A couple years ago in Guadalajara, I had a filet stuffed with huitlacoche. Oh, boy...

The Veleros Restaurant at the Corona Hotel in Ensenada serves up a great huitlacoche omelet.
