Netflix Starts Rolling Out Streaming Service To Mexico, Latin America And The Caribbean

Movie and TV subscription service Netflix has announced the arrival of its service in Mexico, Latin America and the Caribbean in the coming week. Netflix launched today in Brazil and will be launched in 43 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean by September 12.

Netflix announced in early July that it would be launching in 43 countries across Mexico, South America and the Caribbean later this year. The company also announced a deal with CBS to offer content in these regions.

Brazilian users can immediately begin a free, one-month trial of the Portuguese-language version of Netflix by going to Netflix’s site. After the free month, the monthly subscription price for Netflix will be BR$14.99.

On Wednesday the Spanish-language version of Netflix’s streaming service will become available in Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay. The monthly subscription for unlimited streaming of movies and TV shows in Argentina is 39 pesos while in Uruguay and Paraguay the price is US$7.99 per month. On Thursday and Friday, the service will roll out to Chile (3790 pesos per month), Bolivia ($7.99), Colombia (14,000 pesos), Venezuela, Peru and Ecuador (US$7.99). On Monday September 12, Netflix will launch its service in Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. In the Caribbean region, Netflix will be available in English and Spanish and will cost $7.99 per month.

Good article, but!

I doubt if you will be able to watch a US account in Mexico.

I think you will only be able to signup in Mexico and watch only authorized Mexican approved content.

I hope I am wrong

By using a "VPN" we are able to watch Netflix, Hulu, USTVNow and HBO-Go from CSL.

I already have my US account, and i got it precisely because i don't want to watch a Mexicanized version of it. Lets see how it is.

True, if you want to watch on you PC.
However, if you want to use a router and use a Netflix Device, spoofing is far more difficult, unless you use a cracked firmware.

I use a Zoom 3g router and there is no cracked firmware

I use a old laptop, dedicated to my flat screen with HDMI, to watch Netflix here.. but the bigger issue "streaming" is low download speeds here in LTO. I have been only able to get 3 mb/s at peak times, as opposed to 12-15 mb/s in Oceanside..

Nope...not into watching a little screen. The hubby has always ran it through a 52" TV. I am not the "techie" in the family, I just sit back and watch...my favoriite is "HBO Go"!

I use the Western Digital WD Live Plus.
It supports Netflix, Hulu Plus, etc.

It is a nice little box for the bucks

PS If you have a WD Live Plus, they just upgraded the firmware that allows for a bunch of new apps

I called Netflix today, they said that if a subscriber has a US account, as of September 12 2011, they will be allowed to stream just like in the US.

I just got off the phone with Netflix in Portland, Oregon, at 1-866-636-3076. They told me the version of Netflix that is streamed is determined by the country that is receiving the service, that having an address in the USA makes no difference. The version of Netflix we'll get here is the Mexicanized version, no exceptions, as that is all that their licensing agreement with Mexico will permit.

I know little about it, but it may be that our only hope of getting the American version of Netflix here is to go through one of the services advertised online. "VPN?" Is that it? I hope there's some way of finessing this issue.

We tried the Mexican version of Dish and found it totally unsatisfactory. Almost all of the best content had been doubled into Spanish, a practice which, in a more perfect world, would be judged a form of felonious assault on the art of movie-making and punished accordingly. Doubling Michael Caine's voice? How totally absurd.

Wiley, tell me I'm wrong about this, pleeeezze.

That sucks, I spent 1/2 hour on hold to get erroneous information. More training with their customer service staff would certainly be a good thing.

*You are right dubbing is absolutely atrocious. It is a criminal act on the arts.

Funny, the trend you see at SkyMexico and DishMexico is towards doubling content to spanish, completely ignoring the fact that in northern Mexico, people don't like to see american content doubled in spanish, specially with chilango accents. They also don't seem to realize that in the future, more and more americans will retire in Mexico and will prefer non doubled content.

Another stupid chilango mistake.

We just subscribed to Netflix Mexico, have tested it for a few minutes and find it satisfactory so far. The audio stream came in doubled in Espanol but there's a button on the screen that allows the audio to return to original English.

Subtitles in Espanol are available. Don't know yet if English subtitles will be available when the chosen audible language is English. That would help we who are hard of hearing or have difficulty with the sloppy manner sound is mixed in today's movies, thanks largely to Robert Altman. Yeah, accents, mumbling and whispering is the way people talk in real life, but in real life people are also constantly saying, "What?" "Come again?" "Would you repeat that, please?"

Now, our question is, how do we get the Netflix signal transmitted from our computer to the TV, which is in a room about 30' away. We have a coaxial cable built into the house wiring system but I understand that coaxial is not compatible with HDMi, and that the HDMI signal degrades quickly, so the computer (or other receiving device) has to be immediately adjacent to the TV screen in order to get a good picture.

The streaming quality has been good, so far. The film loads up then streams without interruptions. As more people subscribe I suppose there's a chance of overload and diminished quality. We shall see. We are in La Paz and subscribe to Prodigy Infinitum, by the way.

Being that I am constantly crossing the border I want it to work in both the US and MX. I just got the email saying it was available in MX, so I will test it out tonight when I get home.

I use a laptop and HDMI short cable. I am curious to know if the US subscription works, 2 Netflix people told me it works in Mexico...Has anyone tried it?

I had a stateside acct with Netflix and they recognized my email when I signed up for Mex netflix. The movies have the original audio and 3 choices of dubbing, Spanish, Portugese Spanish and English and the same choices for the sub titles. This is a help in learning the language, for me. Streaming is smooth as it buffers in advance of play. My connection speed varies from 2Mbps to 5 and even connected at 2, netflix is smooth playing. It is 99 pesos a month.

One solution is get a tablet like iPad or Asus Transformer.

Mike - a few choices from apple. they have 2 direct to TV cables for digital or analog TV's. Check your TV to match video in and there is only one video out port on the iPad. Or you can use the iPad video out cable that has stereo RCA cables to have the ultimate set up so you can attach to ur TV and stereo system. I'm assuming you have iPad2, not sure what iPad 1 has to offer.

LaTijereta - "old laptop" could be your problem. If ur connection speed is 2Mbps or higher you should be getting smooth playing video IF you have a fast cpu to handle it ( and a decent video card) Borrow someones newer laptop to test?

I tried the free Netflix yesterday and I'm not anywhere near the speed required.
What a shame !
