well, I just had a thought...maybe we could have an emergency contact number/medical insurance name etc somewhere on our individual profile here on baja nomad site ...... it wouldn't have to be public but look how much time we could have saved....I feel so bad for Ron. Untenable Unacceptable and Avoidable situation.

what a great idea Blanca...we should definately do it..it would make it so much easier to respond in emergency situations like this...making contact faster could save someone's life and could include medical insurance company and number of policy too.

I often ask our guests for a contact number just in case but perhaps it should be something we do with every guest...something to think about for sure in these troubled times.

Just to let you know. I recently started offering an emergency contact and messaging service. The cost for that service is an annual $25 fee. I have the database and where-with-all to handle this.

Of course if Doug can do it all for free, that would be great as well.

Just so everyone knows, I have had this service set up for a couple of months already and am definitely NOT trying to make anything off of the tragedy which has happened to Ron and his wife.

he probably didnt have his walllet with him and neither did she either, I'll wager .... and we so often are called to help each other out ....

for sure it would not hurt

now, on mexican driver's licenses they ask for an emergency reference name and number - in my case I put call my husband and he put to call me. if we are in the same accident, there is nothing else for them to go on.... and no matter what, they can't handle any emergency contact in english to the states with family or insurance. baja nomad wd be a great avenue. or katie's service.

not sure what an internet forum can do to act as your emergency contact database....
but you can:
keep cards in your wallet with emergency contact info;
program "ICE" numbers into your mobile phone; and
wear an ID on your jewelry

to be able to contact a family member would be huge, in and of itself. It seems that someone is always in the know about accidents here on this board, right away.

remember, in this case, Ron probably di dNOT have wallet or cell or anything else ...

Can we (gringos) have a 'AUTHORIZATION FOR MEDICAL TREATMENT' document that would include authorization to transport you in case the need arises? It would probably have to be a notarized document.

I have to say, having been in the IT world for 32 years, that some of you are just to free and easy with your information.
I understand that most folks think that everyone on here is safe and frinedly, and you are probably correct, however, when you share your first name last letter of your name, a photo of your vehicle with your lic plate showing and state the name of the town or towns you live it and when you are taking a trip to Mexico??
Way to much info.

I am not criticizing but mearly trying to educate.

I'll add that posting your birth date, say on facebook or where ever and your place of birth or your high school is not a good idea. Just one other bit of info and someone can steal your ID. Also, just trying to educate.
Maybe nomads could choose 4-5 other nomads that they know and send them their contact info. Not ideal, but....

In my business information is power and that is what I sell, information. It is a lot easier to get than you think.

What you need to do is to give all of your personal information including banking, medical and any business to someone you trust and DO NOT post anything on the internet or your computer.NEVER!

I would never pay for a "service" to store my information. I'm sorry Katijay99 but I don't know you. I don't know your past. How in the world can I trust you with all of my information? Because you say I can? If you are just offering a contact and emergency business then that would not be so bad but it's the information you store that bothers me and why could I not have a family member in the states do this for me?

With all due respect Lizard Lips - Many people can do that but seldom do. The information I get from people are kept on a computer and database that I wrote specifically for this and is one that is never online. Once I receive the information, it is deleted from any web based (email) site.

There are lots of people living a single life "down here" and I can remember a few who passed away and trying to find who to contact was a nightmare. I have been thinking about this for quite a while now and finally finished writing the database. It is also good for those who just visit.

The only information I collect is Names, phone numbers, email addresses and Insurance Information. If the person has additional comments to add, I put them in the database as well.

I think it is a good service to provide. It is very frustrating when you want to help someone and can't. I like helping others.

Little Thread Hijack here...

Geez, almost had another Nomad emergency on tap-- this time myself.

I've been putting thinned varnish on petate sheets the last several days and finished this morning.

I'm alone here at the house and walked back into the storage shed where I've been working this morning and picked up a half-filled bottle of water, opened it and took a big swig...

it wasn't water.

It was paint thinner that had been poured into a 1-quart plastic Kirkland Water bottle, marked with tiny black lettering at the top with a price and sold that way!

Thank god it tasted bad and I didn't swallow, was outside on dirt and spat it out immediately. The problem then was the fumes. I couldn't inhale, so just ran to the house kitchen sink and luckily there was water in the tinaco. I ran water into my mouth enough to catch my breath, then continued to rinse for several minutes.

Tongue and lips burned, but I'm ok now.

This has been a couple crappy days!

The bright side is the love that Nomads have shown once again to Ron and Cristina and their family and friends. Thanks, Everybody.

oh my gosh Mulegena.... so glad you are OK...that could have been a serious serious situation

I once ran a business and the guy across the street ran his own business too. one day he up and had a heart attack and died. It took me a couple hours to question his workers about where they thought his family was from - he had moved from Vegas. He has no family at all in san diego and no one knewany family contacts. Believe it or not, I tracked down his ex-wife based on his last name and she flew out that same day .. but it was so stressful.

I think a list where you put the name of a sister brother mom at least would be a good idea. and the idea of giving it to another baja nomader WHOM YOU KNOW and who is on often, is sage advice too.

Just to clarify a little more.....

I act as an Emergency Contact Routing Service. If you use my service and I am contacted on your behalf, I will access the list of persons you have given us and make the necessary phone calls for that person to contact whomever has contacted us on your behalf. We will have a minimum of 3 contact options for you in case one or more are not available when we call.

You have the option of giving us your blood type, allergies, existing medical conditions as well as current medications and insurance information if you want us to give this information out immediately upon being contacted in the case of a medical emergency. There will be no other information given out. It is actually a good idea to have this information available in the case of a medical emergency where seconds may count and a family member may not have it readily available.

I will never give out contact information and I do not charge anything additional for calling people on your contact list.

I can do this service for anyone in the US, Canada or Mexico. I speak Spanish as well.

Not to be fatalistic, but accidents happen randomly-- in spite of thinking that we are taking care and living wisely, accidents can and, unfortunately to one degree or another, happen to us all.

I'm fine now, have a chemical burned tongue and lips which will heal up. However, I'm hopping mad that this would happen-- a business here in town is using old 1-liter bottles with the manufacturer's label still intact, fills 'em with clear paint thinner, sticks the cap back on, marks it with very small lettering on one side up at the top "Thinner #3" and sticks it on their shelves to sell!!

I am appalled at this and we will be seeing the owners of the store today. Good god, what if it were a child or if I had swallowed? (just like Bill Clinton "I tried it but didn't inhale.").

Yes, we all need our houses in order, mine included. Let's get to work on this, friends.
