Road from 1 to Punta San Jose

UCsurfer - 9-14-2011 at 02:41 PM

I'm planning a trip next week to punta san jose in N. Baja. I've never been there and am wondering about the graded road that goes from the 1 at San Vicente to punta san jose. all the maps say its a graded dirt road, but I have a lower clearance, 2WD SUV so I want to make sure the road is passable.

Any info would be great! thanks

San Vicente to Punta San Jose?? It's been awhile but we entered behind.... Hope you have maps! Tio

Punta San Jose is west of Santo Tomas... a long ways north of San Vicente. A paved road goes to Ejido Erendira from 'between' Santo Tomas and San Vicente. From there a graded road runs parallel to the coast towards Punta San Jose.

The fact that these Kooks would get lost would probably lead them to discover new locations & a hundred memories!! Better than following the main road and explicit directions. Thats how I found it?? $10 bucks a nite today to sleep on the ground, no! Tio Oh yea---now you can take a class & get college credits!

Take the main/widest dirt road in Santo Tomas. It will go up the hill... I think its the turn off right before you hit the police station. Take the most traveled road... A few minor water crossings, easy dirt road.

I was there about 2 months ago and the outhouses were knocked over...

Water was still very freaking cold like usual, even in the middle of summer. Bring booties and your warmest suit.

Ya I got my towns mixed up i meant santo tomas. my bad.

I wouldn't ask directions to some secret spot.
From what I hear this spot is packed on the weekends with san diego gringos anyway.

Any web search gives thousands of random websites with explicit directions to this spot along with the surf report. Just thought I'd ask on road conditions.

yeah, you need at least 1000 posts and 2 dozen trip reports before even dreaming that you're ready for the secret spots..... just kidding, sorta!

have fun out there. post some words and pictures when you get back.

Amigo, by the way--Welcome! UC San Diego? but not a local to the area or you would know this spot, verdad? Cuatros Casas, San Jacinto, etc. These reefs have history back to the 60s and Surfers Journal did a layout of Rich Harbour with his team including Robert August, Mark Martinson & Mike Hynson of Endless Summer fame. Smart UC boyz should know their history. Me, Gaucho 1971---Isla Vista Animal! Smiles Tio:coolup:

UCSB = University of casual sex and beer...really

...no really!

Yeah its funny how PSJ is such a well known spot. I've only got it good once, and been there quite a few times since I was a kid. My dad never took me there though... he hates the spot. I've decided never to back. Been skunked too many times, even when the swell was pumping in San Diego, PSJ will be closed out and mushy.

But, if you get it on the low tide with a strong offshore, its pretty fun... and yes, cold cold cold!

UCSD. all the baja names i wanted were taken!

Born and raised in SD, my first trips to baja were back when my friends dad would take me to quatro casas. I've been hooked ever since.

After college my goal is to buy a truck/camper, and live out of it in baja until I run out of money!!

Thanks for the comments and advice, hopefully theres some swell.

Swell forecast looks pretty small. That road is nothing major. You should be fine in a 2 wd SUV.

"this spot is packed on the weekends with san diego gringos"
Maybe Punta Cabras on weekends (used to be, but I think fewer people going generally), but hardly no people at all along most of that coast. Maybe because it is rocky and trecherous with deep water surf pounding the cliffs. Very picturesque and great camping. I've been from the lighthouse to Erendira on the coast road - it's a great drive. The first and only time I ever saw a bobcat in Baja - was chasing a rabbit and ran across the road.
