ATM GUERRO NEGRO

WINNEBAGO - 9-28-2011 at 03:46 PM

I AM LOOKING FOR A SAFE AND ACTIVE ATM IN GUERRO NEGRO THAT WOULD BE OPEN ON A SUNDAY. MAYBE A BANEMEX OR SIMILAR. I AM HEADED SOUTH AND AM IN NEED OF SOME PESOS.

comitan - 9-28-2011 at 04:03 PM

I have used Banamex a few times without any problems, they are separate from the bank.

woody with a view - 9-28-2011 at 04:18 PM

i was told by a friend that foodforless on palomar in chula vista will trade dollars for pesos. i'm gonna call them later.

dtbushpilot - 9-28-2011 at 04:19 PM

There is a bank on the right at the far end of town, I believe it's a Bancomer. I've used it several times, no problem, I believe the ATM's are open 24-7 there.

Welcome to Nomads.......dt

Banamex, a little past the downtown Pemex, the road makes a left curve, and it's on the right. Can't miss it. As dt says, dependable and available.

dtbushpilot - 9-28-2011 at 04:43 PM

The Bancomer on the highway in Viscaino has an ATM if you miss the one in GN.

Mulegena - 9-28-2011 at 05:17 PM

Banamex Guerrero Negro, location as noted.

Bancomer Guerrero Negro, I've heard there is one. Anyone know where?

Bancomer Vizcaino: There are two 24-hour machines. One on the east side of the highway across from the Pemex station at the north end of town at the Bancomer bank building. Parking is horrible; better to park just north of there and walk back.

The second automatic teller is at the far south end of town on the west side of the highway where the 6-lane divided road converge as the 2-lane Mex-1. Its small, almost nondescript, rather hard to see, although its in plain sight with usually easy parallel parking nearby.

Withdrawal limits with Bancomer: a max of 10K pesos per day. I've found the automatic teller machines in Vizcaino to be low on funds frequently and simply not give more than 1500P. An option is to go into the bank to the teller to make a transaction. Be sure to provide your driver's license or passport as they'll require identification. The bank teller hours are 9 - 3 M-F, i believe.

IF NO ONE NOTICED IT WAS MY FIRST POST. LONG TIME BAJA GUY. THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE REPLYS. SOUNDS LIKE I CAN FIND ONE OR TWO ATMS. I HOPE TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE SITE IN THE FUTURE. AGAIN. THANKS. WINNEBAGO

BajaBlanca - 9-28-2011 at 05:22 PM

obe of the best and safest places to get pesos - well, there are 2 good places

1. the costco in chula vista as you go south

2. after you cross the border, thre is an ATM after the last toll booth right before you enter ensenada

and yes, as mentioned above, there is an ATM on the right at the bancomer bank in VIZCAINO.

welcome and have a safe trip !

bajaguy - 9-28-2011 at 05:39 PM

Stop at the Commercial Mexicana (Pelican) supermarket right next to COSTCO south of downtown Ensenada on Reforma (HWY 1)..............top off with groceries, drinks, ice and a few Magnum Ice Cream bars..........also a varied selection of bank ATM's......safe and easy.

Geez. If you are looking for an ATM in Guerrero Negro, as was previously noted, there is one at the Banamex approximately two miles into to town on the right.

There is also an ATM at the new Pemex station just West of the Cowboy hotel. However, I have found it to not be working on a couple of occasions I've tried it.

And as for the one in Vizcaino, have used it several times, but have been told it may run out of cash from time to time.

So, if I were you, as I head into GN, I'd check out the ATM at the Pemex station on the left, If it's not working, drive on a mile or so and look for the bank on the right hand side of the road.

As last I knew, there will be no more ATMs until Santa Rosalia.

If I was really short on cash, I don't know that I would rely on the bank in Vizcaino. Just alot more folks in GN who rely on their bank.

dtbushpilot - 9-28-2011 at 06:40 PM

I wouldn't use an ATM that wasn't part of a bank unless it was an emergency, you need to be carefull regardless....

Hola winnebago and a big hearty welcome to the Nomad sandbox...lets hope you like to play!

IMO, it is always a good idea not to wait till the last bank but try some on the way down...the new bank machine at the new Pemex at the entrance to Guerrero Negro was working last week just fine...sometimes the vizcaino Bancomer machine does run out of cash.

Have a safe trip and we look forward to seeing your trip report.

check your U2U box up in the right hand corner please for a private message

At least the ATM at the PEMEX is in the store (much like the ATM's at the AM/PM stores) where it can be monitored. The ATM's at the bank are not monitored at night.

I will try harder! Thanks for noting my typo, I corrected it above.

Bancomer in Guerro Negro is excellent. Stay away from Scotiabank in Ensenada as my card got skimmed there.

David K - 10-1-2011 at 05:33 PM

Welcome Davey...

Some history:

GUERRERO NEGRO is the name, and it is Spanish for the words Black Warrior. The Black Warrior was a whaling ship that sank in the lagoon that now bares it's name.

The town started in the mid 1950's was originally called Salina Vizcaino, and was a company salt mining town. By 1957, the name was changed to Guerrero Negro.

By the early 1970's its growth and importance exceeded that of El Arco, the mine town to the east in the center of the peninsula. The main peninsular road had always passed through El Arco. In 1973, the new paved Baja highway coming north from San Ignacio diverted to the newer, bigger town of Guerrero Negro with a side highway (Mex. 18) built to El Arco.

The Baja Highway (Mex. #1) was officially opened on Dec. 1, 1973 at the border between the state of Baja California and the territory of Baja California Sur, very near Guerrero Negro. The Eagle Monument, 2.2 miles north of the Guerrero Negro entrance road marks the border. Baja California Sur became a state in 1974.

actually, the GN ATM at Pemex is not in the store, it has it's own separate room around the corner and not even seen by the store. It has already been robbed once so I'm not sure how monitored it is by the store.

805gregg - 10-2-2011 at 06:16 PM

Just go in the bank when they are open, I won't use an ATM in a third world country.
