Barrio Logan Murals

We spent a few hours down at Chicano Park today looking at the murals. They can be found under the San Diego side approach of the Coronado Bridge. They are currently doing some restoration work on a few of them.

When all that first started, the state would come along from time to time and paint out the works, but it reappeared as fast as they could get rid of it.
Finally, in desperation, the state gave up and called the place a park and turned it over to the taggers.
The "art" wasn't always so well done. It started with gang crap.

I am always confused about what ius hyped in the media about the distinctions between graffiti and murals?

Without the gang affiliations, it seems that graffiti is as much art as municipality-approved murals.

Not that I have any art critic credentials.

That approval is probably the only difference if we just attach the term "Art" to everything....which it isn't.

Beautiful art/murals at "Chicano Park" that reflects "Chicano culture" pride and Mesoamerican dualistic nature of the locals.

You have to be good to paint art like that in the park, but art is really in the eye of the beholder, and sometimes it's an acquired taste.

It's amazing what art critics could see in a piece of art, but that doesn't stop the average person from enjoying looking at a beautiful piece of art.

Now me I was wondering why Jennifer Aniston would plunk down $450,000 dollars and buy this piece of abstract art from Glenn Ligon titled “Stranger #44?

I have a hard time seeing the art here, and think of this art piece as some sort of "Rorschach" like inkblot art, But hey it's Aniston's money and perhaps to her. This is an important piece of beautiful art.

hijack: Ken -did you go to the amaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazingly delicious Mexican restaurant right under the bridge in baario logan ???? the line at lunchtime reaches around the block.

dont remember the name of the place...tia something ???...but they make fresh tortillas that you can buy to take home.

There's a popular place called Chuy's right down in there. Maybe that's it.

About four years ago. They were building a house near us and put it on the market half-finished, meaning the walls, roof, doors and windows were installed but nothing inside.

But hey, the Baja RE market must be improving, because a family just "bought", meaning monthly payments-to-own, and the unfinished house is getting worked on regularly.

In Barrio Logan:

Restaurant with lines out the door for tortillas = Los Cuatro Milpas.

Restaurant famous for carnitas = El Porvenir (oldest continually operating restaurant in SD, or so it is claimed).

Another beloved restaurant known for tacos= La Fachada

In Logan Heights:

Sadly, it appears that they may have shutdown. I have been trying to find them open on 3 or 4 visits over the last 3 months. When driving by yesterday, the building has been painted over with no sign. They had some very good carnitas, which we would have scarfed down yesterday.

Perhaps it was SAN Diego Rivera :-). The real Diego Rivera had been dead for about 20 years when the murals went up

This falls into the FWIW category, but here's the skinny on the murals in Chicano Park

Chuey's is long gone, property was sold to the San Diego Community College District and they're building the new Cesar Chavez continuing education building there.

La Fachada and La Paisa are both solid choices for tacos.

Blueprint Cafe does a bang up breakfast/lunch business.

If you need a caffeine fix check out Ryan Brothers Coffee, a stones throw from the old Chuy's location. Excellent coffee, well sourced, well roasted and well brewed.

A couple door down from Las Cuatro Milpas (which in my opinion is overrated) is Panchitas. Very good panaderia. The Panchita mothership is located not too far away at 28th & C (or maybe it's B) but in any event, they have some great stuff to satisfy a sweet tooth.

- unless the standard has gone way down in the last 5 years - I loved eating at LAS 4 MILPAS - which as far as I know is the only restaurant in the area which made fresh tortillas to go AND had a full blown simple yet delicious menu to boot. This is not a 5 star restaurant but just a simple eatery ... since I ran my own bakeries and since I shopped at the RESTAURANT DEPOT only a couple blocks away from there, I used to sneak over there and eat whenever I could...

do I miss those days...NOPE ... but I did enjoy the comida mexicana.

San Diego has always been too conservative for Diego's Proletariate Propaganda.

Has always been controversial. Here is an excerpt from his biography in Wikipedia.

"His mural Man at the Crossroads, begun in 1933 for the Rockefeller Center in New York City, was removed after a furor erupted in the press over a portrait of Vladimir Lenin it contained. The American poet Archibald MacLeish wrote six "irony-laden" poems about the mural. The New Yorker magazine published E. B. White's poem "I paint what I see: A ballad of artistic integrity". As a result of the negative publicity, a further commission was canceled to paint a mural for an exhibition at the Chicago World's Fair. Rivera issued a statement that with the money left over from the commission of the mural at Rockefeller Center (he was paid in full though the mural was supposedly destroyed. Rumors have floated that the mural was actually covered over rather than brought down and destroyed.), he would repaint the same mural over and over wherever he was asked until the money ran out."

Freshly made masa and tortillas are not that hard to find in SD any more. Tortillaria Lily in City Heights is nixtamalizing corn and their masa is wonderful to work with. I also like the masa I can get from Pancho Villa market. Gilbertos in (I think) National City makes some delicious tortillas, as does Northgate market. I have many friends that like the masa (especially for tamales) and tortillas from LCM, I haven't been wowed by them. I think it's just simply a case of different strokes for different folks.

I think the other thing that colors my opinion is that I've had the very good fortune to eat all over the Repbulic of Mexico and I've had some pretty amazing food. And after that, LCM just doesn't measure up. When I hear people call it the best Mexican SD I just kinda have to scratch my head, to me it's mediocre to average Mexican at best. :?:

I do, however, have immense admiration for the family that started and still owns LCM. Tacos have been good to them, they now own the entire block in which their property is located. Given the (re)development that's starting to happen, that's a pretty valuable block now :yes:
