Tecate crossing

BonnieReece - 10-5-2011 at 04:01 PM

What would be the closest motel/hotel on the US side to the Tecate border crossing? We want to spend the night on the US side before crossing early in the morning to continue south.

TIA, Bonnie Reece

Hi Bonnie.....welcome to BajaNomad.

There really isn't anything other than a campground close to Tecate on the US side. El Cajon or Chula Vista is the closest that comes to mind.
There are a couple of nice places in Tecate, however.

I'm not even certain of the town's name but it is at the intersection of Highways 94 (to Tecate) and 54 - east of El Cajon and about ten minutes south of the "8" Freeway. Big town but I cannot see any motel shown on Google Earth.

This puts you about 25 miles, maybe 45 minutes northwest of Tecate.

If you are coming from the east, the town of Campo might be an option.

Just off I8 n Boulevard. Several nice places in Tecate.

What time does the border at Tecate open in the morning - is it still 6am, or are they open 24/7 now?

Hi & Good Morning Bonnie, (I'm awake in the wee hours Up North reading your request for motels. We're going duck hunting soon and this a good use of my free time...helping you with info regarding Baja.)

I know your route very well and have kept lots of notes since I first went that way. Once or twice going thru the sights/smells/chaos of TJ convinced me long, long ago. Now I always cross into Baja California Norte at Tecate in the early morning hours...and over the last few decades have stayed at all of these stateside places before making the border crossing.

You have a lot of choices, but what could be better?

Closest to Tecate/US side lodgings are as follows:

"Jamul Haven"...an experience you would like!, but was too spendy for the night ( pamper-time resort $240)

St Francis Motel $27-$40 Best deal for the money
(619) 444-8147
1368 E Main St, El Cajon, CA. (cheap, okay..busy Main St, but I was comfortable..cafes, etc. are walkable.)

Fabulous Seven Motel (Church-run motel)
(619) 442-0457
1527 E Main St, El Cajon, CA (..friendly, okay..bibles in English.)

Valley Motel .. (Co-pilot blushed when I pulled in..opps..)
(619) 442-7761
585 N Mollison Ave, El Cajon, CA (..maybe I'd stay if they let me load my .40 Glock with a bigger clip.)

Villa Serena Motel $?
(619) 442-4317
771 El Cajon Blvd, El Cajon, CA (looked but did not stay--who knows? A toss of the dice.)

Days Inn El Cajon $65-$70 (got a decent weekly rate while waiting for Dodge PU tranny repair..was adequate, but boring.)
(619) 442-0973
683 N Mollison Ave, El Cajon, CA

Motel 6 (not so bad for a 6) $50 no rats.
(619) 588-6100
550 Montrose Ct, El Cajon, CA

Travelodge El Cajon $51
425 West Main Street, El Cajon, CA
(619) 441-8250

Howard Johnson San Diego Area/El Cajon Hotel $49 (good for the money..clean pool, nice laundromat, cute desk gal.)
588 N Mollison Ave, El Cajon, CA
(619) 579-1144

Quality Inn & Suites San Diego East $60-$70
(619) 588-8808
1250 El Cajon Blvd, El Cajon, CA (small rooms for the money)

Sycuan Resort $135 .. my second choice ...(very good golf course and ambiance..they understand rum drinkers.)
3007 Dehesa Road, El Cajon, CA
(619) 442-3425

Holiday Inn Express Hotel La Mesa $86
(stayed 1 nite & got really smart MD-wise ....performed open-skirt procedure.)
9550 Murray Drive, La Mesa, CA
(619) 466-0200)

There you go, Bonnie & party...there are many more, but they leave you a long ways from Tecate.

Good luck and have a wonderful trip to Baja.

p.s there's great fruit market on Hwy 94 (Campo Rd) at Rcho San Diego...look for it on the right. (southside). They open early.
