Baja Traveller Wanted - Mid November

Wanderglobe - 10-6-2011 at 01:22 PM

Hiya folks,

I thought I'd start here before posting on other travel forums to see if anyone wanted to tag along on a 4 to 6 week excursion through Baja. I'm hoping to leave Winnipeg sometime in the next couple of weeks so I'm guessing I'd want to head into Baja California around the first two weeks of Nov. A map of the route I'm taking is located here:

http://g.co/maps/2h6ws

About Me
I'm a 45 year old, ex-geek, photographer/videographer trying to scrape together a living shooting off the beaten path travel documentaries. I'm very anti-resort and pro local economy. I'm easy going, open minded and a vegetarian.

About My Ride
I travel in a fully restored VW bus with a high top. It's nice and slow which is how I like to travel and can carry a good pile of gear. I will have a kayak and surfboard strapped to the top and you're welcome to bring one along if you'd like.

Travel Arrangements
There's room for two to sleep inside the bus and I also have a nice sized tent for some of the longer stays. I have an outdoor shade structure that acts as a dining room, kitchen and card playing area. Costs are shared for gas, accommodation and food and being on a strict budget I'm trying to keep that under $200 per person per week. I've got all the stoves, sleeping bags, pots and pans, etc.

The only other thing I ask is that the person who is coming along hold the camera for me every now and then while I'm shooting some video.

Who are you?
Someone with a sense of adventure who is into hiking, kayaking, swimming, surfing, punk rock, classical music, playing backgammon and blowing a harmonica. OK, not so much. If you're adventurous and want to do more than just sit on a beach all day then drop me a line. And yes, there will be plenty of days just sitting on a beach but I also want to hike into the desert, kayak along reefs, try my hand at surfing, visit local towns.

I'm open to suggestions on going anywhere as long as they do not include Tijuana and Cabo san Lucas.

Here are a couple of pictures. This is the bus, Dante the Hellrider, taken in Pescadero.

This is me.

Are you looking for a travel partner or a mate?

I'm looking for someone who wants to travel Baja California that has the same interests as I do. Have you ever travelled with someone who wants to do nothing but tan all day while you want to hike into the desert and see petroglyphs? I don't think it's too out of line to look for someone that has something in common with you.

Why do you ask? Are you available? ;)

...and are you keeping your eye on the weather?!!!
:P

Hope you find a travel mate, if not...a dog (or two) can be wonderful companions.

Nice to meet another veggie,
w

Sounds like the REAL adventure here would be spending precious adventure time with someone you don't know who might appear at first glance to share common interests.

Also, once a Geek....always a Geek:tumble: ....noy sayin' there is anything wrong with being a Geek.

Nice. Windgrrrl giving me a heads up on the weather again. Love it. Are you a weather person per chance? ;) I wish I could bring a dog but it would be difficult with some of the excursion I'm planning...primarily in the kayak. :(

Being veggie will make for an interesting roll through the land of chicken, beans and tortillas but I'm sure I'll manage. :)

True enough hey? OK everyone, forget the initial post. I don't care who you are...let's roll. :)

Agreed on the geek bit. I have my share of technology on board but still enjoy sending post cards and writing letters. :)

Wanderglobe, Greetings! Go for it!!:D

BajaBlanca - 10-7-2011 at 04:20 PM

sounds like a fatnastic trip !! we are on hour south of bahia asuncion and be sure to stop by (LA BOCANA) .... I also recommebnd you stop by Puerto Nuevo which is one hour north of Bahia Asuncion - it is remote, it is very small, it is a fishing community (no stores so be sure to take everything you need with you foodwise) and it has no electricity. The Cabanas El Huerto Tangaliote rent for 200 pesos a day. Unbeatable price.

If you like lobster - they have tons of it to trade for whatever you want.

Welcome to Baja Nomad and have a wonderful trip.

Thanks for the information. I've added both destinations to my map and hope to see you some time in the next couple of months.

Cheers,

Don't know if you have been down Baja before. Be prepared to do some photography at Catavena and around Guerro Negro the salt flats are amazing as is the road to Asuncion through the Visciano Bioreserve. Rain may be on the way and if it comes you will see wildflowers/cactus blooms you can only imagine! The Whales of Ojo Libre are also close to Guerro Negro. Have a blast and welcome aboard.

Stay off the roads at night, lots of cows/horses etc on the roads. You will be enthralled with the sunrises and sunsets and the magic that is Baja.

Sanquintinesince73 "Are you looking for a travel partner or a mate?" It is possible to have both, just sayin'

Come on everyone, at least try to learn our favorite Baja place names!

GUERRERO NEGRO (Black Warrior)... There is no Spanish word 'Guerro'. Yes, we gringos know what is meant, but either out of respect or desire to be correct... it would be great if we spelled their towns correctly, yes? :light:

This one is perhaps the most often mis-spelled place in Baja, with even published guidebooks getting it wrong!

Runners up include:

PUERTECITOS
ALFONSINA'S
LOS BARRILES
MALARRIMO
SAN VICENTE
SANTO TOMAS
SAN QUINTIN
SANTA ROSALILLITA
ROSARITO
TIJUANA

All in good fun... and education about our favorite peninsula! :bounce:

That would be great fun. I've also been contacted by two other people who want to come along for the ride, one in a non-VW van and a person who knows Baja very well and will tag along with me. Let's keep in touch and hopefully we can share some Pacificos down the road.

Anne and I will be leaving here on the 24 Nov. We should cross at Mexicalli on the on the 27th. returning mid Jan. We have to see how far the pavement on Hwy 5 has gone then we are open for anything. We will stop and see Coco on the way and take him a few things.

If you see a red Dodge diesel with a 10' Alaskan on the back wave and blow your horn lots as I don't see or hear as well as I used to. we are always ready to share a cold one or two or three or ..

Cheers, Mike
