Important! Need something to store my wines in!

Do any of the "big box" stores in Ensenada or La Paz or ?carry electric wine coolers? Maybe holding at least 24 bottles and not costing an arm and a leg. Would rather buy it down here rather than lugging it down.

Anyone, anyone? Don't make my wine spoil in the heat!

That is a longshot. Perhaps the commercial appliance stores in La Paz may have one but expect to pay more than it sounds like you are looking to do.

I hope that you and your wine will be comfortably cool and happy in Loreto.

Luckily for me, my wine does not whine, it just goes with the flow here in BCS.

Save your money and buy a small dorm size refrigerator, get a thermometer and try and keep the temp at around 54 degrees

You're not going to do any damage to 99% of your red wines, unless you are buying REALLY good wines, by storing them in a conventional fridge. The vast majority of red wines simply do not improve in the bottle with age. And, of course, the same holds true for most all whites.

So, I would agree with a previous poster; just get a dorm type fridge, set the temp as high as possible and dont worry about it. The problem will be finding one that is deep enough to accommodate bottles laying on their side. Otherwise, it's not gonna hold too many bottles.

I'll let you all in on my little smuggling secret........... I line the bottom of an ice chest with my good, "expensive" wines (really, only 15-25 dollar range), then cover them with ice and put conventional ice chest items on top. They never go through your ice chest at Aduana, IME. The wines are fine, even after 6 hours at 32º or so.

Basically, from TWO good sources (one a wine retailer in Mexico and one a consumer who got caught with an excess of wine) Aduana will allow 9 bottles of hooch (wine, hard stuff, whatever) per vehicle before they decide to slap the 90+% tariff on the excess. And apparently it could be 9-1.75 liter bottles; they really dont discriminate.

Yeah, there is decent wine down here already. But Zins are almost unheard of, as well as good Pinot Noir or any Napa style Cabs, which I love. So, the occasional customs running becomes important for me. I generally am only bringing about 6-8 bottles over my legal limit.

I know this goes against common knowledge but...I left a case or so of wine in Bahia de Los Angeles and the wine spent two summer there! One of the bottles of homemade Pinot Noir aged to perfection! Others varietals had gone bad or unchanged but I knew my homemade and that was the best bottle of the 5 cases I made!
I better get back down to baja and continue with my important research!

Hard to believe, but there was a wine refrigerator at the tianguis in Loreto just last week, didn't notice it yesterday, but wasn't really looking. It might still be around.

WOW....That sounds like a lot for a small refrigerator without a freezing unit. Is it endorsed by the Punta Banda Wino's Association?

It's not so outrageous. pricewise. It's larger than the average under-counter wine captain. It's probably 4-5 feet tall, to accommodate that many bottles.

Figure 13.3 pesos right now, so its about 278 bucks. Mine only holds half that much and I think I paid about 130 bucks for it in the states. It's a Magic Chef. That was about 4 years ago.
