Soy sauce for bug bites and burns

Bajame - 10-14-2011 at 09:02 AM

Tip of the Day! Read in the LA times that soy sauce takes the sting and itch out of bug bites. Tried it on some bites that were itching like crazy and presto! the redness and itching were gone. They recommend for burns that you first treat the wound with cold water or ice and then use the soy sauce.

DianaT - 10-14-2011 at 09:24 AM

Thanks-- will try that one

DENNIS - 10-14-2011 at 09:32 AM

If you use enough soy sauce on your skin, pretty soon you'll have to sit in the back of the bus. I mean....doesn't it stain heavily?

Hook - 10-14-2011 at 09:36 AM

Wouldnt be surprised if it's the salt content doing it.

Try a strong salt solution and see if it works the same.

You're over-sensitive. Because of a civil rights movement, we don't have to refrain from talking about it as though it never happened.
I don't see anything in the Negro's dilemma today that requires hushed silence. It's all important, but none of it sacred. It's part of my life as well.

Dennis----------I agree with you 100%. Your comment was humorous, nothing more, as I saw it.

Race-relations is now an open book, and should be discussed openly IMO, and folks that are offended (or pretend to be) should get-over-it ASAP.

The cry of "racism" is so boring, and usually unfounded. If it happens, then prove it and prosecute, but stop all this "crying" and consternation.

MitchMan - 10-14-2011 at 12:49 PM

Dennis,
Is Motoged overly sensitive or are you overly insensitive? Think about it. The flip comment you made refers to a very cruel state of affairs, an embarrassment for the country and a painful time to millions of black people and other people of color, a time where lives were lost in the effort/movement to abolish such treatment.

Motoged took note of your flip comment, there are many others who would be outright offended. BTW, your comment really doesn't constitute "...talking about it..."; it was a flip and slightly careless attempt at unsophisticated humor. That isn't a discussion; this is. big difference.

Barry, I think that your "sense of humor" needs some work and your implication that motoged's comment is a "cry of racism" is an over reaction in defense of an accusation that hasn't been made. Tells us something about your predisposition.

Besides that, what's wrong with the back of the bus?? I sit there all the time......

OK...Why don't all you sensitive people get together and post a list of things we shouldn't be allowed to talk about...or say. Let us know what should only be whispered in secret.
While you're at it, tell me why a Black Man can say ****** and I'm not allowed to.
Then....tell me why you are a champion of the double standard.

PS....Can't squeeze this one by the morals-machine******, but you know what it means. Maybe I should have told the machine I'm Black.

bigzaggin - 10-14-2011 at 01:25 PM

If Bajanomad is your barometer for what's socially acceptable, you have far bigger issues than a touch of insensitivity.

And for the record, soy sauce is great for bites. Especially if you get attacked by one of those hamachi bugs that swarm Cortez in summer.

Mitch------My "sense of humor" is what it is, and nobody is going to "work on it", least of all me------frankly, I enjoy laughing, even at my own expense.

I don't deny that I have a "predisposition"---I don't know of anyone that doesn't.

----and motoged--------I guess you are going to have to clear up your reasoning behind your above comment-------just what DID you mean?? :?:

And for the record, I love soy-sauce, both in my mouth and on my skin-------and I have always wanted to be more "brown skinned"------I think "brown skinned" folks look so much better than lily-white (albino-like?) me!!! but then I grew up in a beach-town where EVERYBODY (but me) was beautifully "brown". It's all funny, tho.

Now I have another excuse to spread Soy-Sauce on my skin-------for bug bites!!! Life is so good.

Apparently, bugs only bite white people (aka Gringo's) who treat themselves with Soy-Sauce so they look like non-gringo's-----Oh wait, that is not correct-----Soy-Sauce makes bug bites that already happened physically feel better, especially if it happens in a bus (tho there is no accounting for the reported mental anguish of turning brown as a result). It is so confusing, and I am sure there is a oriental-angle to all this. (excuse me, "Asian")

'Oil of Mint' as my bottle reads.....or mint oil....(who the hell says Oil of Mint, anyway?)...is also good for bug bites, plus it's a great motorhome stock item for repelling ants and other crawlies. And...it's safe for the environment..and in a pinch, you can spray it into your mint julep c-cktail.

MitchMan - 10-15-2011 at 09:02 AM

Soy sauce is a great condiment. Been using it since the age of 4.

I use copious amounts on beef steaks, pork chops and fish. Even as the sole condiment on cooked broccoli, cauliflower, boiled cabbage and sauteed zucchini. A couple of dashes of both Tapatio and soy sauce is my secret ingredient in salads with vinegrette or Italian dressing and in soups. Ofcourse, don't forget its application in everything sushi/sashimi.

To learn that it can be effectively used for medicinal purposes, well, that puts soy sauce in another level of distinction.

KASHEYDOG - 10-15-2011 at 09:35 AM

BTW.

1 oz soy sauce ( Kikoman if you have it )
1 oz red wine vinegar ( garlic flavored if you have it )
1 oz olive oil

Makes a great salad dressing and sooo easy to put together.

Come to think of it....:o... The left over could be my new sun tan lotion.
WOW.....:wow:...... aren't I just brilliant???????????

The Value of a Drink

"Sometimes when I reflect back on all the wine I drink
I feel shame. Then I look into the glass and think
about the workers in the vineyards and all of their hopes
and dreams . If I didn't drink this wine, they might be out
of work and their dreams would be shattered.
Then I say to myself, "It is better that I drink this wine and let their
dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver."

And saving the best for last, as explained by Cliff Clavin, of Cheers.
One afternoon at Cheers, Cliff Clavin was explaining the Buffalo Theory to his buddy Norm.
Here's how it went:

"Well ya see, Norm, it's like this... A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers."

WARNING: The consumption of alcohol may make you think you are whispering when you are not

What a bunch of wackkos! If your not drunk then your sure on something pretty strong. When I was little and going to church on the bus I always sat in the back and never thought anything about it but then again it was( my choice). Mans inhumanity to man, as seen on this board. Soy Sauce, a little dab will do ya! There was no mention of bathing in it. Everyone hold your breath for 20 minutes and things will normalize.

I think I've finally found a use for Kikkoman soy sauce!!!

Kimlan is the soy of choice in our household.

The Top 38 time-proven bug-bite remedies...

Pompano - 10-16-2011 at 08:19 PM

"Ye shall find all ye seek on the Internet"

(Please remit 2 cents to Al Gore before reading:)

1. We have asps and assassin bugs from time to time. Both bites/brushes sting like crazy and within seconds will cause huge whelps and pain.

After going through every rememdy and medicine in the cabinet trying to relieve the burning/stinging, we found a tube of Preparation H.

Apply the cream to the area and relief is seconds away. Due to what Preparation H was designed to do, it reduces the swelling, and also the itch for almost 24 hours.

2. Rub a small amount of eczma cream and take hayfever tablet

3. For mosquito bites:

Take a cotton ball, soak it with mouthwash (I have only tried Scope), and drip some on the bite. It might sting a little. You can also rub the soaked cotton ball on the bite if it doesn't stop itching in about 15 seconds. I heard this from my aunt and so far it has worked almost every time.

(P.S. Auntie would like to ask is anyone has a remedy for multiple scab scarring..?)

4. Tea Tree Oil. Apply directly to bite or sting. Instantly numbs and sterilizes the wound. Works on bee stings, spider bites, flea bites, mite bites, the works as far I know in California.

5. I use 'Skin so Soft from Avon and I don't get bitten even once. It's a good mosquito and insect repellent.
(also makes a good fish attractant.)

6. Crush aspirin and mix with a drop or two of water. Apply to bite to help reduce swelling and sting within seconds. I do this at night and cover with a bandaid leaving it on overnight. Always works. I have tried deodorant and also have tried baking soda. This definately works though.

(Which one?)

7. I'm a lifelong believer in Baking Soda, Vinegar and tobacco remedies for insect bites, itches, rashes, etc. but when that doesn't work completely [ie, still itches &/or leaves big, red welt] do this: REMOVE THE VENOM!!
I have a small vacuum pump [for minor automotive uses]. Center the hose-cup over the welt, and let remain for about 1 minute...the 'venom' will be extracted and you will have relief.

(You gotta love THIS one! A toolman!)

To get the mosquito each out rub baking soda on it for a little bit, it helps with the itch and gets the bite to pass faster.

8. we have a family remedy for bee stings past down from generation to generation from cherakee side of my family use tobaco or snuff wet just a little and stick on where u r stung put a bandad on it to hold it in place

(Dear snuff user..cherakee is spelled cherokee by the Aniyunwiya cherakees I know. I'm letting 'bandad' go for now..)

9. When I was a child we had alot of blackberry bushes around our house so in the summer there were alot of bees. I would get stung on a regular basis. My mom always said put mud on it. I know it sound crasy but yeah put mud on it, let it dry and wash off. The mud is cool so the pain will stop and while it drys it draws out the stinger. You won't even itch afterwards.

(are there NO spelling police on this site...??)

10. Use ice not heat to heal itchy bites. It constricts blood vessels which keeps the histamines (itch causers) from reaching your skin.

I learned this in nursing school.

(mmm...mud?...nurse?...Say, did you ever date a tall guy with a silver t-top firebird?)

11. Gentlemen while touring the Volcanic Crater Community El Valle de Anton, Panama, bought a product called Gruberīs Jungle Oil for a severe reaction to sanfly bites. chit, this stuff not only repels insects but in a few minutes it removed the itching and allergic reactions. Its made by a local herbalist called Botanico Gruber. I recommend it highly! Its available there in the arts and crafts market.

11. For insect bites, take childrens benedryl or adults, whatever is available to you, and dab benedryl over the affected area, a nurse told me this, i tried it, and it really works great.

12. for insect bites, place a towel warmed by hot water over the area, this may comfort the swelling and may reduce the size. after which put toothpaste in it, any menthol toothpaste will fo. when u feel the coldness of the toothpaste remove it and apply medicine

13. If you are highly allergic to wasp stings (I am): 1) immediately make a thick paste of meat tenderizer and water and apply to the sting to neutralize the venom, 2) take a double dose of benadryl to calm your body's reaction, and 3) most important take Apis (a homeopathic remedy) every two hours. This totally cured a HORRIBLE swelling, itching reaction for me in less than 2 days. My previous HORRIBLE reaction took 3 weeks to clear up and I was on steroids! But, if you're having breathing problems, forget all this and get to the hospital immediately.

14. Try a little dab of honey on insect bites always works for me.

(mind if I rub my english muffin on you?)

15. Remedy for itchy mosquito bites. ....take a needle, a sewing needle works best, and burn the tip to sterilize it. Then, once it has cooled down of course, poke a hole intp your mosquito bite where you think the mosquito but its mouth in. Then squeeze your mosquito bite until it bleeds out the venom, you will be able to see it, and it will take 2 days to go away.

16. For Mosquitoes bites, get a teaspoon of Lavender oil and Rosemary seasoning from your garden or your nearby grocery stores. get a grinding bowl and put Rosemary seasoning and the Lavender oil in together and start grinding. Then when it's mixed, put it on your skin when you're outside working. Mosquitoes don't like the scent of Rosemary and Lavender. Try it. It works for me.

(sounds like we use to do for fun in cellblock 8)

17. For bee stings and other insect bites, try this. Get a leaves of a Plantain plant, a weed found in most gardens. Grind the leaf in the palm of your hand until the liquid comes of out them. Apply the liquid to the bite. Repeat this every 3-4 hours as needed.
A better alternative method would be to chew the leaves and then apply the chewed leaves as a poultice to the affected area.

(sounds like what we used to do in cellblock 8 when our stash ran out)

18. big bites
baking soda with water mix it till paste.

(weren't you here before?)

19.
I know this sounds nasty, but i swear it works. When someone gets stung by a wasp, bee,or ect. Mix your saliva and tobbaco from a cigarette together and place a ball of it on the sting. It stops swelling and pain.

20. For stings (and for that matter, also splinters), apply regular household glue over the site and once the glue dries, gently peel it off the skin. The stinger and/or splinter will be pulled out of the site in the glue. For itching mosquito bites, general household ammonia does the trick. Hope it helps

(in Cellblock 8 we never wasted good sniffing glue..)

21. apply clorox bleach directly to bite or sting will kill sting will not get infected works great on all bites and stings [does not hurt] use 2 or 3 times if you want

(I think I heard that Michael Jackson did this once or twice, didn't he?..or it could have been Liberace.)

22. To keep from getting bitten by masquitos take a dryer sheet and rub it on you and your clothing. Something about the dryer sheets they dont like and will keep them away from you...
(hey, this also works great in your socks and shorts drawers...especially the unwashed ones...)

23. Apply roll on deoderant to the area. Relieves itching, and helps stop swelling. This works every time.

24. When I had an insect bite on my foot. My friend from CHILE coated my foot with a thick lather of soap,Then wraped my foot in a warm wet towl,And repated this every time the towl dried. The soap helped draw out the infection.

(duh...that's an old ploy used by Chilean boys to score with Chilean girls..)

25. spray hair spray directly over a bee sting to stop the burning

(burning? Well, hell yes, there's gonna be plenty of that when that hair spray catches fire..dimwit.)

26. For insect, spider bites and bee stings apply preparation H to affected area 3-4 tims a day. This will take the itching and swelling away in a day or less.Do not use near eyes or on small children that may put affected area in their mouth.

(welcome back..H-man.)

27. if you have been stung or bitten get some toothpaste like aquafresh and rub it on the stung area

28. Make a paste consisting of one (1) aspirin with a drop of water and apply to the bee sting. The stinging ceases within seconds. DO NOT USE IF ALLERGIC TO ASPIRIN.
(and do not fasten a plastic bag over your head)

29. Apply immediately sodium bicarb moist with water immediately after the bee stings. It gives immediate relief in pain. If sodium bicarb is not available, apply a bit of tooth paste. It also works nicely.

30. Take vitamin A to prevent bugs from biting you.

(vitamins are okay, but do not take Viagra naked in a swarm of bees)

31. Make a paste from water and ground-up asprin. Apply to bite or sting and allow to dry to reduce swelling.

32. Use pennyroyal tea with a drop of eucalyptus as an insect repellant.

33. Apply aloe vera gel, baking soda and water, garlic oil, honey, plaintain tea, safflower oil, or vinegar to the affected area.
(and then roll around in your salad)

34. Apply lemon juice and cornstarch or lobelia extract and myrrh to painful or itchy stings and bites.
(dang..ran out of myrrh and lobida yesteday when the neighbor came to borrow a cup)

35. Hang dried tomato leaves near windows to ward off bugs.
(you saw that vegan Dracula movie, too, right?

36. Make a paste of water and meat tenderizer and apply it to the affected area.
(yes, yes, welcome back to you, too..)

37. Take garlic to dissuade insects from biting you.

(talk with #35 and learn..)

And finally the final one..38.

If the bug that stung you 20 times was black with a red fiddle mark on it's belly...put on your lipstick, bend over... and kiss your burro goodbye.

This is somewhat related to Pomp's list. My grandmother dipped snuff. Once I got hit with about a dozen wasp stings on my face. She rubbed snuff on them and it did feel better... but yuck!

I had a very close experience, Oso...with the remedy my Aunt Alice used on us kids way back when. (Big Al, as everyone called her. Really..she was 6'1" ...and nobody messed with her)

Big Al did not dip snuff, though, but she did chew Beechnut tobacco plugs and would gum some of it on my bites. It may have actually worked in the short time the chew was on me...who could know?..I got washed off right quick.

Is that why my Dad referred to soy sauce as "bug juice"??
