They are very popular down here and fairly easy to work on, especially the older ones. Parts can take awhile to get. If you are bringing one down here, bring OEM spare wheel bearings.

we've had ours about seven years...

it's burned oil the entire time but what a car!!!
parking...size is PURRFECT

they're gutless but amazing
ours is 4x4 wow
tires are at least 5 years old and still have tread

its a 1986...
parts...kinda hard to get
even in the states

i needed to rebuild the alternator at an alternator place the second year...none around at the time

right now...dist rotor is non-existant...but they can be repaired for a long time

when this guy dies...i will ABSOLUTELY get another one

there's a guy back east that sells complete engines ans all the parts

he got me a tow bar that bolts right on...no welding
we tow it down

i'd bring it

Tires are tires, just bought a set for my Zuki at Mexicali Costco. The guy I bought the car from had the engine rebuilt by a local San Felipe mechanic a couple of years ago.

We have kept this 1987 Sammuri (The "co-driver " calls it her "Little Burro") down here in Loreto for about 15 years now..
I welded on a bar in the front to tow it down here with a VW tow bar. Set it up with a ball and hitch to launch my panga if needed..
Found a decent mechanic in Loreto, who can fabricate parts when needed.. There are many of these guys running around town..

I went on my honeymoon Back in 94' to Bahia Gonzaga in our Suzuki Samurai, boy did we do some wild thangs on top on the bottom inside and around the CAR! :lol:

Bought one for a tow car in about 1990 got rid of it and swore I would never have another one, Buttttttt every time I see a Nice one I think Maybeeeeeeee.
When one hits the Pick and pull or places like that It is picked to the bone before they get it off the truck People sell the parts on E. Bay for a Big price.

I have had a couple in San Felipe area for last 10 years and there are several shops who work on them and one of the campos has a guy that works on them and has spare parts

Dear Nomads who responded...thank you for your answers and photos...
I really admired Bob and Susan's blue one...looks so legit...and that
Gray and white one hardtop (Morgaine7) amazing!!! and Tigereta...wow
yours looks like it was in production last week and you got the pick of the
litter...and the blue on in the river with the Dakota plates...looking way good...

basically what i'm hearing from you guys is that 1. you love 'em. 2. fairly dependable
3. many mechanics improvise and 'work it' - with some parts taking some time to order...
4. patience and planning is a part of the experience...5. generally the vibe from you
guys is "buy one"...

In Mexico, all things are possible. We are fortunate that in San Felipe, I have a neighbor who is a retired Lexus mechanic from So Cal. He is quite reasonable and has been able to fix everything I have thrown at him.

To tow a Sami: place tranny in 2nd gear (that's right, it keeps the tranny lubed); place T/C in neutral; start engine to make sure everything is disconnected (don't forget to turn off engine; but, leave steering wheel unlocked); disconnect front hubs; and, make sure emergency brake is off.
