for those who have never been to La Bocana, you might not know that our water is delivered by water PIPA - a huge truck that comes once or twice a weeka and delivers agua to a huge tinaco (container) which one then pumps into the house ...

well...that is all about to change - the governor went to Punta Prieta today to inaugurate the project that will take water from Vizcaino to Punta Prieta and subsequently to La Bocana.

The group that accompanied him stayed at the house - and Les made his famous Polish eggs THREE TIMES for all 12 of them !!!!

and the best part of all ... I talked to one of them and he is going to see if he can get us a jumpstart on getting someone to help us organize a proper landfill for LA BOCANA, PUNTA ABREOJOS, PUNTA PRIETA AND BAHIA ASUNCION .....

Blanca.
I don't understand. Asuncion already has water. Previously the governor stated he was bringing the pipeline down the coast, south from Asuncion. La Bocana and Abreojos being the last two towns on the line sometime (ha) next year. Has something changed?

right you are and I have removed BAHIA ASUNCION from the aquaduct part - sorry about that !!! For sure Asuncion already has piped in water ....can't wait til we do too.

It is happening. Some of the people are here now--- So it is beginning and hopefully it will not take that long to reach you in Abreojos!

Now with that said, while we do have the piped water here already, there are times it goes down for up to a couple of weeks! Old pumps, etc. ---- so keep the big tinacos.

jumpstart, someone to help organize, for towns in a 65 mile stretch --being the operative words.

I didn't see where he said He would do it.... come to think about it , I don't remember seeing very many "proper" landfills anywhere in Baja Sur.

A proper landfill doesn't guarantee it would be used properly, though. There is a municipal dump that is not used by all.....

I think I have taken a plastic bag to the dump and wind blew it back to my house before I got home. We are so use to living in a place that everything is recycled that it is hard to get use to the desert dumping life style. I have noticed that the stores are getting use to me having my own grocery bag or basket .

diane is right....while it has been nice to have water piped in, it is quite unreliable and often the water is "off" for many days as opposed to the old days of desal plants which was pretty regular.

The other issue is that our water source may be overtaxed with all the towns using it. I have been hearing comments about Los Pinos in Vizcaino sucking up incredible amounts of water...leaving less for the coastal communities and there is alot of noise being made and opposition to the new mining project at El Arco which of course would use copious amounts of water as well....so, yes, huge tinacos or build some water storage pilas cause things are gonna get tighter with water I imagine.

Land fill eh...fantastic! And I hope recycling begins to gain popularity too. Since we are on the topic of gargabe, I would like to stress..once again...that visitors to the area DONT NEED TO BRING cases of water bottles from Kirkland and cases of non refundable beer bottles from NOB...there are 2 excellent water purifyer plants here and of course lots of beer sold in returnable bottles. I am simply astounded at the amount of garbage tourists are making and we are getting a plan together to deal with it and build recycling bins at the Campo and casitas.

There is a group of women who started a recycling depot here for cardboard and plastic so we will be taking it there but I really think tourists dont need to fill their vehicles with stuff they can just get here....oops, bit of a highjack...lo siento.

Shari, do you have any links to the mine projects at El Arco. Are they finally going for the copper they have talked about getting since the 1970's??? I do think the water supply for El Arco would come from a different source than Vizcaino, considering its location.

The El Arco project will be a real tragedy for the area especially for the archaeological sites which are pretty much unprotected and ripe for destruction Yes, water is a major issue here and the water table just from the heavy use in Vizcaino has got to be dropping. It is sucked up with no thought to conservation, with the powers that be blind to the fact that there is NOT an endless supply of the liquid gold.

I don't think everyone is blind to the water problem. I see a lot of new irrigation and growing techniques through out Baja. Water always will be a problem in Baja, just like it is in SOCAL.

However, some old timers have told us that back in the 1980s the de-sal plant was beginning to not be enough as the community grew. So they requested a solution----be it a good one or not.

I have heard that the de-sal plant in Abreojos is old and has problems---but Ralph and Blanca would know more about that.

Water for desert communities will always be a problem ---- no people, no water needed----people, need to find water somewhere. No easy answers. Heck, Los Angeles could not be in a worst place.

Recently they installed some water meters here in BA---commercial properties first.

It could be worse around here---someone might want to install a golf course---not one of those nice dry ones, but one with bright green turf. :biggrin:
