Pepper spray, is it legal in baja!

deportes - 10-28-2011 at 04:48 PM

Just wondering if it is legal to carry pepper spray in Baja.

YES.....just don't spray someone more important than you.

deportes, Welcome to the forum. About that pepper spray. Only for natural born Mexican citizens. Gringos are allowed no more than 2 red chili peppers and they must be in a sealed container. However, between the hours of 3 and 5 and 8 and 10 these peppers may be unsealed, as long as no witnesses are present. They can be sniffed or snorted, but only downwind from any local residents. Violation of the pepper laws can lead to imprisonment, deportation, or the much preferred sanction, a heavy fine. In short, who knows?

Use something more effective than pepper spray or ammonia/water........

Wasp Spray

Bomberro - 10-29-2011 at 06:43 AM

Wasp spray goes a long distance, is nasty stuff, and legal. That said, never use it agnist any long arms, like AK47's or M16's. Small arms like the 9MM's could be problematic also, I tried it once on a guard dog pit bull, and it shook it head and got very angry, only a good fence stopped him, I wasted an entire can, cost me about 7 bucks, and if the fence had not been strong enough I would have had bites and wasp spray all over me. I still think the best defense is a hand grenade strapped to the chest and pull pin clamped in teeth.

I knew that.....just couldn't remember what I knew....at the time.
Thanks Blanca.

I have never used anything like this on someone, but a few times I have been using spray choke/carbueretor cleaner and accidently gotten a small droplet in my eye. Put me on my knees immediately.
Might work as a defense spray if you were ready and had it in your pocket or something.

let the debate come again....

I have previously posted about this subject. Forget the pepper spray......use wasp spray! It's legal....it's a accurate 20 ft spay....It's cheaper.....it's handy as hell.

Always do I have one when hiking (for wild animals)....traveling (for wild humans)... and one in the truck.

Here's a link ....for interesting reading.

I'm sure that none of us NomadsŪ would mind a bunch of blind malandros running around.

Well, if you don't care, might I suggest a green laser pointer:

Small, easy to carry, 1/4 mile range......effective

I don't know if pepper spray is legal or not but I can relate an experience we had with the military check point just north of Loreto.
We were driving our towed vehicle which, when behind the motorhome is never searched by the military. Since we were driving it, the solders looked it over pretty good. They found a purse size can of pepper spray in the glove box. The solder brought it out still in the snap close case and pantomimed spraying it in my face. He did it in a manner which I interpreted to be asking me if that was what it was for. My only answer was yes. He smiled and put it back in the glove box. So I guess it is legal at that checkpoint.

Perfect Baja interpretation.

Yes

bajaguy - 10-31-2011 at 02:58 PM

Pepper spray is legal, according to representatives of the Ensenada Police and the PGJE in Ensenada. Apparently pepper spray and MACE (there is a difference) can be purchased locally.

Stun devices such as stun guns, TASERS and shock sticks are not according to the same sources........

However, it is Mexico, and those opinions/answers given at 10:15AM on Saturday, October 29.....can and possibly will vary depending on day, date moon phase and solunar tables.

YMMV

They used to be sold in the gift shop at the TJ airport. Pre-911 for sure.
