Memorial to the dead at the San Ysidro McDonalds

sanquintinsince73 - 11-1-2011 at 09:03 PM

I snapped these photo's of the memorial to the 22 people killed in the San Ysidro McDonalds masacre in 1984. Some people earlier today dressed it up for "Dia De Muertos". The McDonalds was demolished and the land donated to the county. Bare with me on the quality, it was very difficult to contain my emotions as I thought of the little kid laying dead in the parking lot next to his bike and his bag of burgers.

I remember this very well ... was still living in Miami. Moved out to San Diego later that same year, in 1984.

Thanks for sharing your photos!

Huberty, a survivalist, saw signs of growing trouble in America, believing that government meddling and regulation was the cause of business failures and unemployment, including his own. He believed that international bankers were purposefully manipulating the Federal Reserve System and bankrupting the nation. Convinced that Soviet aggression was everywhere, he believed that the breakdown of society was near, perhaps through economic collapse or nuclear war. He committed himself to prepare to survive this coming collapse and while in Canton, provisioned his house with thousands of dollars of non-perishable food and six guns that he intended to use to defend his home during the coming chaos. When he moved from Ohio, he left the food behind but brought the guns with him.[3]

The Suspect lived in Baja (briefly):
In January 1984, the Huberty family left Canton and briefly stayed in Tijuana, Mexico before settling in San Ysidro. He was able to find work as a security guard in San Ysidro; however, he was dismissed from this position two weeks before the shooting. His apartment was three blocks away from the site of the massacre.

Thanks for the info Ken. I had heard a few years back that he had said "I'm gonna go kill some Mexicans" as he left his apartment. Who knows, but it is really an experience to stand there in front of that memorial.

Before Huberty left for McDonald's, his wife Etna asked him where he was going. Huberty responded that he was "hunting humans".[4]

This line reminded me of the song, "Hunting Humans" by one of my F A V O R I T E Punk Rock groups The Misfits.
