thanks Dennis ! I have never made one myself and the only one I remember drinking was at EL MORRO. and it was really good. But I hope some people post their own tried and true versions ....

If you add tomato or Clamato juice it's not a Michelada... it's a Chavela.

The most important thing is a very large frosty mug. Here's the Acambaro version, highly recommended.

We served these in the Sacramento area back in the early 90's. Use a dark beer...lime...not lemon...follow the standard recipe otherwise.....oh and add a hint of Maggi seasoning!

We like to spice it up with some chili powder, soy sauce (or maggie), a couple limes, pinch of salt plus salt on the rim, 1 or 2 drops of tabasco sauce and depending on the mood we add clamato (or not) :)

I agree with mcfez, it tastes better with dark beer, negra modelo makes a pretty good one!!

Good luck!

ok....there is a dearth of specificity here...
here's how i do 'em:

iced mug, tall 12 oz min.
add ice.
add one shot good blanco teq.
add canned Tecate to an inch or 2 short
add clamato
squeeze 1/2 mex limon.
salt to taste, especially the rim.

drink....continue to add beer from the can till it is gone.

very refreshing when it is hott outside.

Something similar but really simple in San Luis I call a "Border Maria". When it's 120 F you stop at a gas station/convenience store, buy a little can of Clamato and a 24 oz. beer (The locals like Bud Light but I prefer almost anything else.) Then you pour about 1/4 of the beer over your head, then add the Clamato to the beer and guzzle it before it gets warm.
