Would you visit San Quintin?

In light of the brutal attack on BajaGringo and his wife, there has been some San Quintin bashing here recently. I believe that it was an aberration and not necessarily "brown on white" crime as some would have you believe. My question is simple: Would you visit San Quintin in the future?

Never heard the "Brown on White" theory. Only that it was a foiled burglary/vandalism attempt.

San Quintin is a great near Cal. area to visit.

Yes, with conditions.

Years ago (over 20) we were warned by locals not to camp on the beautiful beach where the old La Pinta was located and not to camp on those dunes south of town all the way to the "left turn". Funny all these years later I have only seen a couple of campers along that stretch of dunes.

Without hesitation we overnight in motels there and have enjoyed going out fishing with a guide.

just a thought..............if you are white and a victim of crime in San Quintin odds are it is "brown on white". (first I have ever heard that expression)

We do. We have friends there, Mexican and American. Camped there (playa San Ramon) as early as 1966 when the Marquez family ran the coop out there.

BUT I have seen a steady increase in crime over the years. Not just brown on white (seems like a racist type of phrase to me). Local Mexican bank robbers shot on the beach by the military during their getaway (80's). Buss's burned by farm workers during riots. Car thefts, break ins etc.

Today we are more aware of our surroundings and head the advise of our local friends "beware".

We would surely stay there in a hotel in the future and have stayed there many times in the past. dinner at jardines is one BIG incentive !! and the margaritas at cielito lindo used to be too !!

Hell yes. Will be doing an oyster run at some point next month. That road out to the oyster farms sucks though. Every time I do it I just pin it to 45 mph, crank the stereo, grit my teeth and hope nothing breaks.

Way more to the point.. and from what I know or have been advised the crime in the San Quintin Valley is not exclusively against the tourist. BTW The conflict (read racism) that exists in that valley between the "indios" and the long time locals is un believable.

Indeed. The Mixtecos are treated badly by some even though they do the majority of the back-breaking work.

If only I felt safe about the hazardous drive from Carlsbad ,Ca to the border. Ya know, in recent months we've had 2 cab drivers shot and killed while on the job. There's the incident of the elderly couple hacked to death with a machete, the sixteen year old boy found shot dead yesterday along the road near a golf course and how about the 77 year old lady who along with her 2 dogs (one of which was killed) was attacked by bees in Chula Vista. I wish I had time to list all the horrible things that happen in southern California but if I did then nobody would want to come here either.

Maybe we should get a "Nomad Security Caravan" together for a run to the border.
As for myself, I'm just too scared to leave the confines of my humble abode. God forbid I should ever have a need to go to L.A...:o...:fire:..:O...........:no:..:no:..:lol:...:lol:...:lol:...:P

They have Africanized bees in Baja as well. There is a very old grave site by the turn off to Santa Rosalillita. Under on of the head stones is a very large hive and the bees will come get ya.

Since my sister lives near there, the answer is definitely yes. There are some nice places around there, but like anywhere, we do listen to the locals about any current problems.

Just to clarify, rts551.....I hope you realize all I've said here was just me being sarcastic and trying to show that there are actually just as many problems in the U.S as in Baja. Probably more. I love San Quintin and Mexico in general and I'm down there all the time as many on this board can attest to. Just had lunch at La Differencia in T.J yesterday.

I only had one "near-miss" in San Quintin - by the Police who set up a road-block and asked me to step out of my vehicle. They acted like they were up to something, but when they realized that I was traveling with several other Jeeps, they quickly asked me to get back into my Jeep and told me that I could drive away.

For that reason, I am not concerned about "Brown on Black" crime, rather, "Corrupt Police on American Tourist" crime.

Yes, I would (and will) visit San Quintin regularly.
My wife and I have made the trip from Ensenada just an a whim (even on the motorcycle), just so we can feast on the freshly harvested oysters as well as the "CAMPECHANAS" and clams casino at the oyster stands. Those alone are worth the drive!

Plus the visit with Ron (bajagringo)...what else do you need out of a trip to Baja?
