Any waves like this in Baja

DianaT - 11-9-2011 at 09:22 AM

For all you hard core surfers------

May be the largest wave ever ridden

Really a beautiful thing to see.

Ateo - 11-9-2011 at 02:24 PM

I saw video of that this morning. I think this is one of the biggest ever ridden. Todos Santos Island is capable of something this size if the swell and direction cooperate.

that isn't surfing, it's surviving. i wouldn't do either on that one. one of these days someone is gonna die, again....

RIP, Mark Foo.

These guys are nucking futs. I can't even comprehend it. I wouldn't even be able to breathe if I was on a boat next to that thing breaking.

DianaT - 11-9-2011 at 06:52 PM

While beautiful to watch, I also thought they were crazy, but I don't surf!

I don't think its the biggest, huge, but not the biggest.

We lost another surfer this past winter at Mavericks. There are countless other close calls out there as well.

Garret McNamara is committed to this type of stuff. It paid off recently. Everyone knows this is what he wants - and if he dies - that's his own fault for doing what he does. He knows this is a possibililty. We should let people do what they want to. Mark Foo knew this and so did Sion.

Sad---always sad.

Years ago, I worked with the wife of a Navy pilot. She was a psychologist. She said that every time a pilot was lost, her husband and the other pilots always spent a lot of time figuring out why it would never happen to them. They always found that it was pilot error and an error they would never make.

She said that it was what kept them going because if they had to admit that it could also happen to them, they would probably never fly again.

I just wonder if this also applies to those who engage in sports at their extremes. Just wondering.

With that one behind it, that would have been a long hold down. Scuba gear needed!
But those tow ins @ Jaws seem bigger, or just longer drops.
Huge though, just huge!

I was lucky to be able to watch this contest at Todos Santos from a boat in the channel. The 2012 contest is just around the corner....if the waves get big enough sometime in January or February, they will run it!

True for some of us, Diana. My Dad, a Navy Pilot, was killed at age 29-----pilot error!!! I flew commercially for years, part of that time with the National Park Service as a Law Enforcement Pilot, but at age 36 I concluded that it was possibly "just a matter of time", and that was not fair to my wife and 2 kids, so I reluctantly gave it up-------never have flown again. For me it was a "duh" moment-------I have never since regretted the decision.

To each his own, as they say, but to me the anguish we cause others is just not worth the thrill of flying.

Having spent a lot of time doing high risk actives in the name of fun we passed on having kids. I didn't want my kid to grow-up without a father and I wasn't going to give up the fun.
When you take on these actives you accept the risk and the outcome.

Bob H - 12-30-2011 at 11:19 AM

I've often heard of the big waves out off Isla Todos Santos... a surfer pays to get towed out there by a jet ski, right?

Man, those waves are big and beautiful!

magentawave - 11-23-2012 at 11:04 PM

That huge wave at Todos Santos island is at the spot known as "Killers" and its the only place I have ever surfed in my life where I thought I was going to die...and it was only a foot or two overhead that day!
