Go to town, buy 15 pounds of shrimp, tortillas, 50 pounds of ice. Beer and Tequila you should have already bought at Vasquez in Sonoita (So-no-EE-ta). Then immediately head out of town towards Caborca about 15 miles and hook a right to Playa Miramar. In other words, rent a house and get OUT of town. Nice beaches out that way, well until the Aztec Princess or whatever the Hell its called gigante hotel/resort got built on the estuary. Penasco is pretty much toast, a suburb of Phoenix. Get there on Sunday night. During the week, its pretty sweet until about Thursday. Then Buffy and Biff, the ASU co-eds show up with the ATV's. By then you should be headed back towards Lukeville. If you need a rental recommendation U2U me. A good time can indeed be had, ya just gotta work at it these days. H.

Checked on the places we used to rent at Playas Miramar and Dorado. The lady is selling out her properties. In this economy, I'll bet that they are still for sale, and probably still for rent.

Used to be a pretty sweet spot until... bla bla bla

Buena suerte. H

Dont ask me. I avoid the place. Not a pretty town at all, IMO. Harbor sucks. Water sucks. Too close to the border, too; there have been some bad shootouts/bodies dumped.

But no beheadings or mutilations that I can recall. So, maybe it's not so bad.............

If you drive a big 4x4 truck, take whatever measures you can to prevent it from becoming stolen. They are hot items for use in transporting contraband across the border in open desert.

It will probably be windy.............

see? ask Hook!

where are you driving from?

RP can be ok for a quick visit.
but there are better places to go these days unless you are driving from central to southern AZ.

BajaInMyFuture - 11-12-2011 at 09:07 AM

Yes we are driving from CA. I/we have made multiple trips (Driving & on Motorcycles) throughout Baja and have had a ball without any problems at all. This will be our first trip through Sanora. For this trip were at the Mayan Resort outside of town (RCI timeshare). I've always felt safer in Baja than some cities in Cali!!! Is Rocky Point a significate problem or like most media reports blown out of proportion??

Not sure if we'll cross from AZ or at Tecate, any suggestions there???

There is a now a highway between El Golfo de Santa Clara and Puerto Peņasco (for a few years now)... If you drive south from Mexicali on #5, then take the BC #4 cutoff to the Colorado River crossing into Sonora, you could save a LOT of miles going to Pto. Peņasco (and check out El Golfo as well).

Sorry, no new Sonora maps with the new highway on it, but Nomads have posted photos of it here when it opened.

Rocky Point many years ago was really very nice. A few years ago we decided to check it out again----we drove in, ate at a fancy taco stand where the lady refused to take pesos, and drove out. It was a weekend and Buffy and Biff sure have a lot of friends!

Still looking for maps, but here is one that shows the new road:

There is an Aquarium about 10 min south of town(along the beach).

the Mayan is nice but it is way out of town by the new airport. about 20 miles - way past the 4th estuary.
Los Conchas development was the 1st to develop nice beach homes north east side 30 plus years ago.
the mayan people paid for the new jetport.

it is a all inclusive destination concept so stock up unless you want to go to town a lot.

there are plenty of other condos on sandy beach close to town to rent, some are tied in with RCI.

many flyers gave up on RP when they closed down the city airport in town.
now it is $25 each way cab if you land at the new one.

Even 5 years ago, Penasco had some attraction to nearby tourists.
Last Christmas my bro-in-law went down and there were only about 10 campers in the 100 RV campground they stayed at. Half the restaurants etc were closed.
