How bad is construction in Mexicali

bonanza bucko - 11-12-2011 at 07:19 AM

The Baja gumming announced that there will be major construction on the main drag from the border in Mexicali to the south. I think the name of the street is Lopes Mateos.

We are driving down there next week for Thanksgiving with a new fridge and will need to pass customs...we'd rather do it in the downtown entry than at the East one. So we really need to know how much of a hassle driving through Mexicali there is.

Please give me your input....appreciate it!

This is from a friend in San Felipe:

Those coming down to San Felipe through Mexicali West (downtown) port of entry, be advised that the main street that goes diagonally through Mexicali (Lopez Mateos) is undergoing some construction. There are 4 detours between the border and the point where it meets the San Felipe Highway. Was not bad this morning, but would be a b-tch to deal with during high traffic times.

I would suggest avoiding it, especially if you are towing. Best ways to deal with it are either:

1. At the border instead of taking the main route south, get in the left lane and take the road that runs parallel to the border (Madero St) and follow that until you get to Justo Sierra which is also the San Felipe road. Or

2. If you know how to take the Rio Nuevo route use it. It is accessed at the border by crossing in the extreme right lanes, then make a sharp right at the Mexican customs booth, go down the hill and take the onramp on the right onto wide divided road (Rio Nuevo) follow that for several miles until you get to Teran Teran and then turn left at that stoplight and you are about 2/10ths of a mile from the San Felipe highway where you turn right to San Felipe.

Go right just after the Mexican check lanes 32-39.843x115-29.791.
Right at 32-39.761x115-29.737, gotta go right, only way.
Left onto divided hwy at 32-39.717x115-29.779. There are stop sign on this hwy. It is 6 lane divided hwy or street.
Sweeps right at 32-38.945x115-28.959.
Sweeps left at 32-37.929x115-29.045.
Sweep right at 32-37.694x115-28.435.
Hwy ends at 323-36.823x115-27.674. On Google the street is Castellon.
Left on Castellon.
Meets hwy 5 Adolfo Lopez Mateos at 32-36.885x115-26.467.
Right on hwy 5 go around traffic circle and bear right for San Felipe
at 32-36.780x115-26.370.

Good Luck.

These readings are from Google Earth dated 2008. The hwy may go further south. But this will get you to the last circle for the San Felipe turn.
