Beach camping in Bahia de LA

khargis - 11-13-2011 at 12:04 PM

Hey all,
We're headed to B of LA in a few days and plan to do some beach camping. From the sounds of it there seems to be endless possibilities but if anyone has specific recommendations we would love it! We're in a '78 VW bus so no off-roading possibilities : )

Saludos,
Kris & Anna

Nothing specific, there are plenty of places. You should not have a problem.
I just posted some photos for your review.

we loved camping at the very end out by the entrance to the estuary or lagoon at the little mouth of it....nobody there if ya camp far enough away from the big houses out that way...i had a neat encounter with a baby sperm whale close to shore in my kayak there....very cool...drive out past town, past campo gekko and turn left and head out to the end there.

If you do get stuck in the sand... don't panic, just deflate your tires (all 4) down to about 10 psi. Remove any sand built up from the front of the tires so there is no 'blockage' of forward movement. Bring a good air gauge and an electric tire pump to refill when you are out of the sand.

thank you. i had forgotten that. good to remember.

tiotomasbcs - 11-13-2011 at 03:40 PM

Amigos, remember any new place you visit you gotta pay some dues. Your first day you'll prolly arrive late and so camp where you can. Second day you can explore and set up a camp! Lots of great spots you'll hear about but not the Best! :wow: You gotta search out what fits you. The Bay has many locations that take a few visits to dial in. That's why we save the best for ourselves and those who have been coming for a long time! Gotta Guide Book?! Gettin there is half the fun!:D Tio

David K - 11-13-2011 at 06:18 PM

Funny thing, but the trips where you get stuck, break down or have some special incident are the ones you remeber as the best! At least the most memorable...

khargis - 11-18-2011 at 08:49 AM

Hey all thanks for the advice. We ended up having a great time camping in Catavina then we headed straight to the Sisters. I think it's going to be hard to leave here...

wilderone - 11-19-2011 at 08:47 AM

There's a great place called Los Pinos about a mile past Daggetts. Both times I've been there, nobody has come around for payment, and nobody else there. Palapa, BBQ, right on the water. Look for the sign.

In the case of Baja Nomad, because goat or Igor have seen my advice on sand driving many times they think everyone has seen it, and thus is useless repetion to make fun of. In the real world, there are people who have not seen that info... and these are typically NEW Nomads... DYNAMIC forum, always growing. :light:

Just because you have seen or know something here, doesn't mean the information is not new to someone else here... ie. just beacaue I post a lot, doesn't mean you can't... Nomad is not STATIC... it's not like a pie with only limited pieces that can come out of it.

being a pisces, I swim upstream AND downstream...and I was a cheerleader..."Lean to the left...Lean to the right...come on nomads ...fight fight fight."

but I gotta say...people really need reminding over and over and over again about deflating their tires...I can't BELIEVE the number of folks who travel back roads with their tires waaaaaay too inflated and their excuse is always not wanting to rip a side wall.

We always have our tires around 15-20 lbs and have never had a flat or ripped side wall....and ever so rarely get stuck in the sand....people just dont believe it or are just too lazy to let the air out of their tires and air back up later. We also pull alot of people out of the sand and most forget that when they first feel like they are getting stuck they should STOP and let the air out....ooooops....did I just mention THAT AGAIN???? oh crap...am I leaning left or right?

Barry,

If the information is that valuable it can be added as a sticky at the top of a forum. Or come up with a poller that automates the posting of the same info.

When a nomad posts the same info repeatedly it's a sign of an unimaginitive mind.

Barry A. - 11-19-2011 at 04:32 PM

SkipJack--------I have no idea what you are talking about as I am not familiar with any of those "methods" of posting that you refer too.

An answer is posted 'repeatedly' (or only again) AFTER the QUESTION has been asked AGAIN... and it is not the newbie's fault that he wasn't on Nomad 4 years and 3 month ago (or whenever) it was first posted.

Maybe, if you want... teach all newbies how to SEARCH for old answers, if re-posting them irritates you? I for one believe I know the purpose of Baja Nomad... and I am following that quest.

So David... where did the newbie ask for information about what to do if he gets stuck?
I seem to have missed that.

fwiw I think the average newbie has better sense than you give him/her credit for. I believe that most newbies make good use of the search tool, especially regarding issues they figure have been covered before.

David K - 11-19-2011 at 05:30 PM

It's not a pie Natalie... there aren't limits here (or the economy) that prevents you from using Nomad... no matter how much the helpers here post.

I give folks a ton of credit, specially if they aren't affraid to go to Mexico!

Offering help is not a crime, is it?

I don't know about your 'quest', David.

All I know is that you post the same information over and over again regardless of it's need (see Natalie's comments).

I made a suggestion which you ignored, telling us that you need to do this for everyone's benefit, the alternative being confusing SEARCHES by newbies.

So I am going to repeat my proposal a SECOND time:

If you feel that the tire deflation is so important ask Doug to add a FAQ thread on the baja offroad forum that includes this information. Ask him to keep it at the top of the forum so that all newbies can get at it easily. In the same manner as Judy's baja list.

Ateo - 11-19-2011 at 11:35 PM

I'm still a newbie so I'm still a kook. My initial thoughts, (after drinking some Tecates and a few shots of rum after a movie premier in Encinitas tonight) are why the hell do any of us care if DK says to let the air out of your tires? Don't like him? Ignore him. Why feel the need to talk chit?

There are many, many personalities on Bajanomad, some you will hate, and some you will like. Why waste your time stroking your ego to put someone down? I think DK was referring to the initial khargis post of having an old VW bus and not wanting to go off roadin'. Maybe he was trying to encourage khardis to take that VW out of the "happy place". Don't be afraid. Explore. Take the air out of the tires.....

Take a friggen chill pill. From what I've seen, DK is an addition to this forum, and has a positive overall affect. Hell, he don't need me to defend him. I'm just a kook and don't know the politics (yet - although I'm learning) of the BN world.

Signed,
-your "liberal" defender.

paranewbi - 11-20-2011 at 05:50 AM

your right on ateo....some of these know-mad superiors remind me of my ex-wife...I say repeat the info that benefits most, often. Keep the snide remarks about it to yourself. Some of the kids in the class need the repitition to get it. thanks DK

David K - 11-20-2011 at 10:02 AM

Thank guys...

Igor, it is Doug's forum, so please don't go through me if you have a suggestion for HIM... Doug is reachable here.

It's Sunday... Go Chargers!

Don't batteries make electricity?

There are hand pumps and electric pumps... in the old days there were also pumps that worked off engine compression using one of the removed spark plug openings.

Here are a couple of electric tire pumps that connect directly to the battery (vs. to the cigarette lighter) and are very fast (5-6 psi per min.):

As a fellow who can read a book, and then read it again 6 months later with no inkling that it's a repeat until page 324, I certainly don't mind repeated good advice.

Interesting passive/aggressive comments BTW, reminds me of the family holiday gatherings from my youth. Thanks for the warm memories!

David, thanks for your reminders. Today I checked my electric air compressor for my tires, making ready for a trip below the border. I might not have done that and found myself in a precarious position if it weren't for reminders like yours. :light:
