any San Carlos, Sonora, folks on here?

am headed back to Baja probably via Santa Rosalia ferry but...would like to visit some friends near Puerto Vallarta, also. since the required vehicle import fee is now considerable, I don't think importing, driving there, then ferrying from Mazatlan makes a lot of sense. am wondering if it would be possible to leave the car in Guaymas/San Carlos for a week or so , bus to and from PV, then ferry to Baja.
anyone local to San Carlos/Guaymas know of any secure short term car parking available for a (packed to the gills) car?

I am in San Carlos.

What are you driving? Is it an RV? Are you trailering something as well? Be specific.

If it's just a car, the All of Mexico permit is around 43.00 US. It lasts the length of your visa. If you have an FM3/2, you can renew it for free each year.

I'd say get the permit. The cost of two bus tickets down and back is probably more. And you wont have your gear.

I can store a car, if thats the way you want to go.

Fenced, dogs in the yard, security lights. But not necessary over here. This isn't Loreto.

Apologies, just a joke.

But I have been reading the Nomad board..................

am driving a Subaru Forester. no trailer. packed to the gills, I am going to the wilds of Loreto after all...
I'd heard but not yet confirmed that the temp car import fee had been raised to 200-400US depending on vehicle. in typical Nomad fashion I'd tucked that unfounded factoid away. are you sure about the $43?
have FM2 so it's good as long as I"m legal, right? I renew in January.
ps loved the joke...

The 200-400 is a bond that is refunded if said vehicle leaves Mexico within the bond's expiration date. That expiration date is the expiration date of the visa you hold. But it is being charged only for trailers, RVs, and (recently) ATVs, Rhinos and golf carts, on trailers. RVs and boats CAN still be imported for the much more reasonable fee of 50 bucks for 10 years.

I havent heard of a car being charged the bond. And I know of MANY people coming down thisaway.

The Mexican government has figured out that lots of RVs/ATVs/trailers are being sold illegally down here by gringos. Cars, too, of course, but they are trying to keep with the spirit of the "no hassle" zone for cars, as it is referred to. That is a concession to Sonora, and approximates a "free zone" like Baja and Puerto Penasco.

The trick to getting the All-O-Mexico permit renewed each year with your FM2 will be finding a place to do that in Baja, since you probably dont come over here to the Dark Side that often.

How safe is your friend's place in PV? I suppose all that gear could be a target.

Anyway, my offer stands.

BTW, when are you coming down? The main INM/Aduana station about 21 clicks south of the border REALLY becomes a nightmare in December. The whole Paisano Program is responsible, if you've heard of that. Like a big pilgrimage based on a religious holiday, I guess. It can take a few hours at times.
