prices on seafood?

dirtbikr - 11-16-2011 at 10:39 AM

If offered to buy lobster, scallups, clams etc. what are the going prices?

David K - 11-16-2011 at 10:46 AM

They will tell you a price... then you can counter (if you want to try and pay less).

Near Bahia Agua Verde, a panga came ashore at our camp (we were not near town or others)... and offered to sell us lobsters! Oh man, what a treat! (I don't remember how much, it was in 2001)

Shellfish & lobster

bajaguy - 11-16-2011 at 10:54 AM

Thought you were only supposed to buy from the local Co-Op????

JESSE - 11-16-2011 at 10:58 AM

Lobster and bay scallops will be expensive, unless your in the middle of nowhere.

And if anyone knows what the going rate is per kilo on scallops (cayo de acha) at the fish markets in TJ on 5th street. I need about 3 kilos next week.

dirtbikr - 11-16-2011 at 11:24 AM

Was just wondering when out in the middle of nowhere or fish camps, what were their prices, I know prices in stores were not that good.

A San Felipe resident recently purchased shrimp
form a vendor on the Malecon in SF, after removing
the ice that came in the bag with the shrimp,
it came out to approx 20% less than a kilo in weight.
Making the price some $18 plus instead of the $15 or so
qouted

I always carry a 16 oz can of "whatever"....to check the scale, why? Oh...I must have been buying from that same vendor you did!!!!! :o:o:o

I have found that buying right off the boats is cheaper.......obviously fresher. I cannot help you with the current prices unfortunately.

During full moon it prob. easier for the poachers to steel them from the traps

Mula - 11-16-2011 at 12:40 PM

The divers like to get lobster at full moon - in the remote coastal areas with no electricity and ice issues to deal with.

Therefore - freshed and best if bought at full moon times.

Seafood prices in Baja? A tad on the high side, maybe more than a tad. You don't want to know what I pay for shrimp down along the Gulf Coast of the USA.;D

Pompano - 11-16-2011 at 04:25 PM

Don't know what he's charging right now...but Ramon was having a slow day getting rid of his last kilo of shrimp in Mulege today. I looked in his bucket...and recognized them.

Mexicali_Kid - 11-16-2011 at 04:40 PM

I buy fish at Popotla weekly and have become familiar with the prices.

All prices are pesos per kilo The price may be just a little lower on a slow day

Yellowtail 35
Halibut 50-70
Rockcod 35
Red Snapper (huachinango) 40
Rosterfish 35
Corvina 30
Bluefin Tuna 50-70
mullet 20
Barracuda 30

Fressh Oysters shucked are 10 pesos each.

Stone crabs are 100 -150 pesos a dozen depending on size

The large "King" Crabs are 50 pesos each
An exceptionally large one could bring 100 pesos.

Steamer clams from the sea of Cortez go for 10 pesos a dozen in the Mexicali Valley.

Of course, there is always a tip due when they clean it for you.

Good luck

the co-op buys all legal sized lobster from the fishermen in the co-op for processing and they cannot sell to the public...I have seen shorts sold for 12 dollars a kilo by pirate fishermen at high risk of being busted....on the other side I have seen lobster go for 30 dollars a pound whole

Russ - 11-16-2011 at 05:53 PM

Seems a little perverted that someone would drive from "North Idaho" to purchase overpriced seafood in the Gulf region. :P:lol::?:

Bajahowodd, Always visit my family and friends for the holidays. The seafood is just an extra, fly down, it's a pain, but it's worth it.;D

KurtG - 11-16-2011 at 07:39 PM

35 years ago two cans of Spam got me 6 lobsters at San Juanico. I was feeling generous so threw in a can of peaches as well. I was happy, fisherman was happy.

vacaenbaja - 11-16-2011 at 07:44 PM

If you are going to use a "16 oz can of something" as a spot check for a mechants scale,
you should make sure that it weighs 16oz "dry weight"
16 fluid ounces of mercury weighs more than 16 fluid ounces
of water. Density comes into play with fluids. With fluids it is a
measured volume amount. So a 16 fluid ounces of soda may not weigh the same as 16 ounces of shrimp.
A pound of feathers weighs the same as a pound of lead.

Marinero - 11-16-2011 at 08:00 PM

In east cape the local fish guy from La Paz has all sorts of fresh fish, scallops, shrimp, clams, crab (cleaned and cooked and frozen) for way less than those prices. Usually top quality and if a little old, he will tell you so.

the contents MUST be 16 oz (or whatever the size can is)...by US law .... The Bureau of Weights and Measures....perhaps add a 1 oz for the can itself.

I dont lead...not healthy :-)
