From this past weekend's storm system......double rainbow over Club Marena.

wessongroup - 11-16-2011 at 02:13 PM

Looking good... any gold found... :):)

Ateo - 11-16-2011 at 02:29 PM

No but I found a box of lucky charms and a Tecate.

tiotomasbcs - 11-16-2011 at 03:00 PM

And the locals from K58?? Club Marena sits on the old bluff and parking lot where many of us broke into surfing in Baja! Brrrrrrr!! The old Tecate can is still there in Campo Martha!! Right Bornfisher?! Difficult entry to the waves anymore. Nice Rainbows. Tio

Yep tiotomasbcs,
As I sat there I tried to imagine what this bluff must've been like to camp on before the condos. I had driven by before the condos, but never surfed it or even stopped to look at it. Wish I would've.

anyone remember Gus Cota? Gus was an OG Sunset Cliffs guy who headed south and built a house near the road, on the old K-38 campgrounds. Gus wasn't the caretaker, but more of the guy everyone wanted to emulate. long story short, and now you see progress.

anyone remember driving onto the beach at Calafia? on the outside (Mushrooms) before the current condo towers grew out of the sand?

THESE WERE THE DAYS.... 1985-ish

edit: better resized foto.

i should really break out some of the old 80's baja norte 110 film fotos. prolly not enough guys who give a sheet....

motoged - 11-16-2011 at 07:12 PM

I give a sheet.....put on a show...:o

bajario - 11-16-2011 at 07:18 PM

I'll give a second sh*t Woody. Bust them out.

I camped on that bluff around '88 I think going down to Rosarito when it was just Papas and Beer and a few local bars for spring break. I was a sponger in the water and with the beer. Man where'd the last 20 years go.

Ateo - 11-16-2011 at 07:29 PM

Bust them out Woody. Thanks for the pic above. My Baja surfing history goes back to 1993 unless you count boogie boarding at Estero Beach in '83. I may have limited baja surf experience compared to you veterans, but I'm really stoked to see and learn more stuff about the good old days. Post it!!!!

Must've been really cool to drive onto the beach at Calafia in 1985!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wish I was older and could've experienced that.........I've still never even surfed Calafia. I heard it was really good 2 months ago during that huge SW swell.

woody with a view - 11-16-2011 at 08:31 PM

oh, THAT swell! yeah it was off the hook. we were part of the food chain, not just the apex predator. we named it Pterodactyls. it is prehistoric!

don't break a leg out here and don't ask where, just fall asleep tonight knowing it is "out there" and i won't spill it......

I never was much of a surfer..more of a rock finder...probably because I attempted it too late in life, but I give a sheet, too..always have enjoyed your surf photos!

BajaBlanca - 11-16-2011 at 08:42 PM

woody - what a great photo ... come on, put up more already !!

woody with a view - 11-16-2011 at 08:42 PM

Scored. Yeah, not a good place to have a heart attack in. You'd be dead. That cliff looks a little familiar. I may have driven by that cliff last winter.

Hey ateo, looks like ya struck gold with Woody... glad he took some pic's

Me too.... would love to see the pic's... :):)

tiotomasbcs - 11-17-2011 at 09:37 AM

Glad there's enough interest in a little Baja Surf History! In 67 and 68 I attended Cal Western University on Point Loma, San Diego. It was hard to get us off the Sunset Cliffs to Baja because it was an epic surf season! When we did destinations into Baja they included K58 and San Miguel; sometimes into the Unknown where Cuatros Casas was the ultimate in exploration.:wow: I remember a few swells where we were just so surfed out we couldn't surf anymore; returning from Baja once we pulled off onto Basilone Rd. and saw 10ft+ lines peeling into Trestles . Just outside sat a Navy Destroyer to keep an eye on the Western Whitehouse of Tricky Dick! Very few photos but the memories are still very clear unlike some of the sixties , ha, ha! Glad it's still happening. Sale. Tio
