whats with the current prices for car rental los cabos? just searched for Feb pricing...many at $60 and $66 per week...never seen anything like that before. Car rental damage insurance is a few dollars less as well. What gives?

Too many cars, not enough tourists would be my guess!
Last time we were there we rented for a week....sure beats paying for the airport shuttles/taxis...and you'll pay about the same!

Is this happenning elswhere in BCS ?

The car rental in San Felipe is history. Not only a lack of tourist...but the regulars with homes are not coming down as often.

We rented a car in Cabo about 5 years ago, a 4-door sedan was about $1000/week. We reserved an economy car, but it was out when we went to pick it up. They had an older Toyo extended cab that they rented by the day to folks for moving and the like, and we got it for a week for $500. It pulled hard to the left under braking, had a 1/4 turn of play in the steering, but it was by far the cheapest rental in town at that time.

Our friends rented a mini-van for well over $1250 for the week.

I rented a car from Fox Rentals in Loreto 2 weeks ago. I made the reservation through Orbitz. (it was much more money to contact Fox direct)

The price with tax came to $70 for the week. It was a stick shift, with air con. roll up windows. (I didn't think they made those anymore) There was one catch, they made you buy liability insurance at $12 a day. Even though I showed them I had my own Mexican liability insurance, they would not give in. Anyway, with liability, the entire week was $150.

Has anyone out there experienced not having to pay insurance?

Supply and demand. Los Cabos car rentals used to be dirt cheap. But, as the number of hotels increased, and the number of tourists did, too, rates went through the roof.

Heather is spot-on. This is what a 60% occupancy rate at the hotels will do. Lotsa cars sitting around, being paid for by the rental agencies. Half a loaf is better than no loaf.

Well, last year and the year before, the tourist occupancy was horrendous, and the prices were through the roof, still. I'm glad they are making efforts to attract folks, finally
