Okay, I have to confess that it's hard for me to get past my impression of Jeeps as underpowered and enreliable. I see that some of you guys are Jeepsters, can you tell me why you prefer Jeeps to other rigs, specifically the Toyos and US Pickups?

I'm not trying to bait anyone, I seriously want to know. Is it suspension, add-on options, power, economy, initial purchase price?

What is it that has you in a Jeep instead of something else?

Thanks!

If you want add-ons...JEEPS win hands down.

If you want reliability...Toyota wins

If you want to get somewhere rough with a vehicle stock out of the showroom...Toyota FJ Cruiser wins, as well as some Tacomas and 4Runners which have the same drive as the FJ.

It depends on how much room you need...

Just 2 people and little more: Jeep Wrangler (with a Rubicon option being the way to go)... unless you add an off road trailer to the Jeep.

More?, then an SUV wagon or pickup...

----------and/or, Nissan X-Terra "Off Road" model (bilstein shocks, elec locker, etc. stock), or a similarly equiped Nissan Frontier Pickup. The "X" has a little more room, and is easier to get in and out of than the Toy FJ, and is a little cheaper.

Hit the nail on the head, Curt.

Ken could speak to the upper limit of mods commonly done on Jeeps.

If memory serves me, recently one was offered for sale here with over $35k in accessories.

It's fun to do if you can afford it. Toyota guys spend some bucks too. I saw a Forerunner in Death Valley I wish I had taken a pic of. It had all new suspension and solid front differential and, and, ............

Nice ride.

Islandbuilder - 11-19-2011 at 03:17 PM

I don't see myself doing Off Road Club type stuff, just want to be able to deal with dirt roads and the mud/sand that can ruin your trip. I have a 1997 F-150 4x4, extended cab and the small V8. Auto trans and the electronic 4x4 selector switch. I have rebuilt the suspension and steering (to stock) and it has a recent motor. The truck is up to about 160K miles, and is getting about 19mpg on the highway. It has a cab-high shell.

I was thinking about getting something heavier, with a stick and manual selector, and putting a camper on it. But, I now think that I just need to go with what I have, and deal with it.

I want to get to some of the remote (and therefore hopefully un-crowded) surf spots, go to lagoons so mi esposa can photograph birds, and generally stay off the beaten track as much as possible.

Anyone want to talk me out of doing that with my Ford? Or can I use my sat phone to call some of you Rubicon guys to come tow us out?

Thanks everyone! Why the Jeep? 4WD is not the whole reason, I live in CO and I have a 4WD F150, an all wheel drive Mountaineer and bought my daughter a 4WD Durango. We decided that with the miles increasing on our cars and the price of new vehichles these days a third used car was a better economic decision, just in case. So I started looking for a 'toy' and this was clean and the price was right, it beat out a V8 Mustang and an older Mercedes SC55.
