How tall can a vehicle or trailer be on Hwy. 1?

David K - 11-30-2011 at 08:41 PM

I recall someone asking this a long time ago, and I just got an email from someone wondering if their very tall boat on a trailer will have overpass/ bridge issues on Hwy. 1.

So, what is the max. clearance overhead?

Thank you!

...and sometimes overhead clearance just doesn't matter.

David, as a trucker, I can tell you, most of the trailers the Mexicans use are used US trailers and are 13'6" tall. As I recall, and I've picked up loads from Mexico in yards from Otay to McCallen, TX, we weren't allowed to bring a 14' empty trailer for exchange, had to be 13'6".

It's been 15 years since I've been way south, but the only overpass I recall possibly being an issue was as you come into Santa Rosalia, the old mining rail, and that's probably gone by now.

If he's under 13'6" he's safe

David, I know the official law in Mex is this verbatim. The trailer needs to be mas a menos lower then the overpass.

I recall a certain nomad having a height/clearance issue with a boat tower.

Not an issue anymore, though

Hopefully they stay on Hwy 1. I came home one time and missed the turn for the waterfront road. Ended up driving right through the middle of downtown Ensenada. The powerlines were sagging so low I knew for sure that the rocket launchers on my hardtop were going to wipeout their entire powergrid. Miraculously I made it through without incident but I was sure puckered

When I was driving back up from BOLA this last Thanksgiving I noticed some lines stretching across one side of the highway to the other thinking boy that line looks rather low.
So it may not be just the bridges you have toworry about as
stated in the previous post
