Hughesnet Announces New Data Limit Rollover Plan

BCSTech - 12-1-2011 at 08:27 AM

On Nov. 29, HughesNet announced the addition of a new, free "Download Bank" feature to their satellite Internet service that will carry over your unused data allowance to the following day, up to 2x your plan's maximum daily transfer allowance. If you are a current customer, this feature will be rolled out in stages. If you are a new customer, the Download Bank will automatically start upon activation of a new HughesNet account. Here is an example of how the Download Bank rollover works:

You can still schedule large downloads using the HughesNet Download Manager, or restore service by using your free monthly restore token.

Although HughesNet didn't specify, I'm assuming this change will apply to both HN9000 and HN7000-based plans. You may still have problems and hit your limit trying to download a big movie but it's nice to see that HughesNet is responding to competition in the US from WildBlue. Benefits their Baja customers, too.

They are not responding well enough! That download scheduler, for instance, only works on PCs....not on Macs. That means that any large security update of Safari, for instance, can't be downloaded without exceeding the limit. We have to take the Mac back to the US to get it updated about every three months.

I went to the Hughesnet "chat" help page...got some dude who was obviously in Mombai and who couldn't say anything but "I sorry you feel that way." He was culturally unable to deal with any problem.

The HughesNet ads on TV imply that their service is somewhere close to as good as either cable or DSL...that is a lie.

I hope BlueSky etc get their act together because HughesNet has been riding free on their monopoly way too long.

Do your large up/down loads during the free access period. That's when I do my Mac upgrades.

Pompano - 12-1-2011 at 09:15 AM

Downloads? Which things do you download the most? Music-movies? I've used Hughes.net since 1999 in Baja Sur and have yet to download anything...and really do not know how to begin. I assume you download/copy something to your computer and then to a disc?

Perhaps I'm missing something worthwhile.

BTW, I just received a new replacement HN7000s from Hughes.Net. Technician Mario Alonso of Ejido San Lucas (between Sta. Rosalia and Mulege) confirms he will have no problems with the install to resurrect my internet.

That is great news! Where did you get this info - I was checking myhughesnet and didn't find any mention of it. Any idea when they will roll it out to existing customers? Will there be a cap on the roll over amount? I never use all my allowance and can foresee my account rolling over a couple hundred mb per day.

Russ- I have the HughesNet equipment that I'm bring back with me when I return to BajaSur in early January. Not familar with the "free access period"- When and what is it?

merlin - 12-1-2011 at 09:53 AM

Oh, read your post again - up to 2x your current daily allowance. Mine is 425 so I can get up to 850. Still not enough to download a movie but I bet I can keep my allowance way higher and avoid getting FAPed when I download large files.

Hope they roll it out soon.

Anything extra at no additional cost is a plus.;)

"How is the Fair Access Policy applied during the middle of the night?
Currently, you can use your HughesNet service for several hours during the middle of the night (the "Download Period") with relaxed application of the Fair Access Policy. The actual hours of the Download Period depend on the HughesNet Equipment platform you are using. The hours of unrestricted use shall begin no later than 2:00 AM and end no earlier than 7:00 AM eastern time."
Here's more info.

HughesNet sent me an Email about the upgrade because I'm a HughesNet reseller. But they were not specific about the rollout to existing customers other than to say it had already started mid November and will continue over the next few months

Here is a link to the letter they sent to customers:

More information here:

(Caution Pompano, if you click either of these links, you'll be downloading something :)

I posted a few HughesNet tips on our website, and covered some information about configuring your computer to schedule OS and applications update downloads during the "free" period. Sorry, I don't currently have a Mac but if Windows can manage it, you can bet Macs can do it better:

Thanks for the link to the MAC scheduler we'll have to take a look at it.

Can't tell you how many times at the onset of the Hughes download bewitching hour around 11:59 pm we've woken up and....
"We really should do the updates."
"Yep"
"I really don't wanna get up and start it, do you".
"Nope"
